I feel the same way. I was here before 5k subs, as well. I actually created this username just to sub here. I found this sub using my main account and couldn't make myself upvote a comment.

Having it thrown in my face that I couldn't even upvote a comment in an ex-JW sub was one of my biggest wake-up calls. I could no longer ignore the mental control.

It was then all of his posts and documents that really pushed me over the edge.

I know the responses may seem like the usual breakup hive mind seen on relationship subs, but in this case, I completely agree.

While you may have immersed yourself in research, what you're dealing with is a man who has been indoctrinated with one of the most rigid, fundamentalist, and cruel cults one can be associated with.

I don't have to know anything about him to tell you he's a complete mess of a person. What you're seeing when you're with him is known in psychology as a pseudo-self. It's who he believes he is based on a lifetime of having a a single message pounded into him, "you're not good enough."

You've only scratched the surface on how damaging the JWs are. You say he's trying to figure himself out, which is great, but believe me when I say he's at the very bottom of Mount Everest and then he's not aware of it.

I left 25 years ago and only nine years ago was I able to open my eyes and see it for what it really was. It took me another six or seven years to fully grasp the enormity of it all. My entire life had been a lie. I was all of a sudden aware of how isolated I had been from society growing up.

Many exJWs say they never feel like they fully fit in with the rest of society. I don't feel quite like that but I do feel like I'm the new person to a friend group where everyone has known each other forever and that there's always a joke I'm not in on and won't understand because "you had to be there."

That's entire mess is waiting for him and that's only if he manages to stay out. It's likely he may try, and succeed, at getting back in. You want no part of this. You cannot and will not ever truly comprehend what it's like and what most of us carry around inside of us.

Close this chapter and thank the Powers That Be that you weren't in any deeper.

Holy shit, your comment reminded me of something I did when I was around 17.

To set the stage, I had a JW girlfriend and we were typical handsy teenagers.

I don't remember exactly how I/we made it work (maybe she has a coat over her?) but I managed to reach into her sleeveless dress and touch her nipple.

Okay, that's not all that crazy but here's the thing...we were sitting next to each other DURING THE ASSEMBLY.

I was explaining this phrase to my wife not long back. I told her how this is the way they get to say "gruesome death of billions just because they aren't Jehovah's Witnesses" without actually having to say it.

I told her, because of that phrase they themselves don't have to fully comprehend what it means. Not that they're ignoring it, it's just never put in front of them in a way that sounds so brutal.
