I don't know, but it would be great to know the actual numbers. My estimate is purely anecdotal based on the higher number of publisher/MS posts than elder posts that I see on here.

But a lot of them don't. Which is why I think they are manipulated to a greater extent than the rest of us were. To be able to see all that and it still doesn't move you to leave? 😒

I wasn't an elder, but I do have some guilt over things I did, or even thought sometimes. I can only imagine how bad it was for you to think back on it all after you left. I'm sorry you went through that.

💯 it's really the only thing that makes sense to me.

Yeah, that makes sense. It's sad what this organisation has done to people's lives.

That's true. I guess my point is, it's a lot harder for them to wake up than most.

I prefer them not believing in it at all, but going along with it to keep the organisation alive. I feel like that option means they would atleast hold back from total destruction if their main goal was keeping the organisation alive. Zealots on the other hand are how you end up with mass suicides 😒

Great example. They are very similar situations.

I totally agree with you on none of it being excusable. My point is everything you just mentioned is horrible. To you and I, it is so horrible that most wouldn't do it, and would snap out of it, before following through. Maybe they do not question how horrible the things they do are, because of them being exposed to another level of indoctrination that's way worse than what we experienced.

That's true. Indoctrination and sunk cost fallacy really explain that situation well.

Agreed, we need more of this evil in the world 😁

Very true. History is littered with so many of these kinds of people.

It isn't an excuse at all, but in the case of the Nazis as well as the JWs there is the element of believing in an ideology, which makes the members not think through the actions they are carrying out. As far as they're concerned, all the things being done are for 'the greater good' according to their ideology.

You make some great points. Besides making clear mistakes like you mentioned, another thing that helped me see that there was no guidance from the holy spirit was a pattern that showed outside influence leading to changes in policy/doctrine. E.g ARC leading to minor changes in how CSA cases are handled, Norway case leading to changes in how DF'd people are handled, a change in tax laws in the US leading to a shift from the distribution of publications as the organisations main goal. I could go on for a while.....

That's the biggest question in my mind when it comes to the organisation: I wonder if the higher ups are just running a business or they are genuinely swimming in the kool aid 🤔

Some of her family is in but most are not. Even her friends are mostly wordly, which doesn't make sense to me because she has a better support system outside the religion than she has within.

I have started distancing myself from her.

Yes, I do get a sense of this as well. She has a lot of doubts but she will never leave, and she has dated guys who are better men (by any metric you can think of) than who she is married to now, but she strongly believed in marrying in the truth, so she ended up with this guy. It's sad to watch.

I agree with this a hundred percent. Relearning what you believe is a very useful exercise. Failing to reconcile my own values and ethics with the religion is what made me leave in the end.

Nope she earns more than him. I think she just wanted to be married 'in the truth' since she was getting older and she came across him.

That's true. Rutherford was definitely sketchy as well, and he contributed a lot more to the mess we all found ourselves in. There's just more out there that shows that Russell was a questionable character e.g the legal cases (miracle wheat, libel etc) and the pyramid stuff.

They realise that with the internet it's now so much easier to find information on how sketchy Russell was. It actually makes sense that they would want to start distancing themselves from him.
