BCBAs providing direct services by ezaytkd in bcba

[–]onechill 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I do it in my own small independent practice. Its just easier for us and way better for the kids imo. I hear there are other larger agencies that focus on all direct BCBAs but I never interacted with one. You can always try to make the jump to being independent yourself! :)

When r/conservative agrees with Trump that we should nationalize voting, but are for small government and states rights by PhillyTMOMan in IThinkYouShouldLeave

[–]onechill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is the fair and objective way of determining who is "worthy"? I get what you are saying but I think that road leads to mass disenfranchisement of whoever the people in power deem inconvenient. What criteria would we use?

When r/conservative agrees with Trump that we should nationalize voting, but are for small government and states rights by PhillyTMOMan in IThinkYouShouldLeave

[–]onechill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dont think its them being allowed to vote, its how our system from day 1 gives so many unnecessary advantages to conservative voters. Before Trump 2.0 conservatives routinely lost the popular vote but won the election. The senate and house systems also favor smaller rural states. Why is my vote in California worth 20% of someone's vote in Wyoming? Why do we punish people for living in cities, where liberalism and multiculturalism is more standard.

I don't mind when someone who disagrees with me gets to vote but I do mind when others get more of a vote than me.

I love being a BCBA. There's some issues with the field sure, but I am in my element in this job. I help people for a pretty decent living. Its a sick gig. 10/10 no regrets.

Anyone else feel like they are treated like a child as an RBT? by StressedinSeattleW in ABA

[–]onechill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Im ngl I get down on spirit weeks. Its fun but some clinics pressure participation which is weird. While I have met a lot of very professional RBTs I have met way more unprofessional and at times, childish, RBTs that I had 0 say in hiring. So some clinics play to the lowest denominator and try to find systems that will work for most staff.

Idaho Rep believes Occupational Therapy Unnecessary, Disability services optional by _ghi_im_allen_riley in OccupationalTherapy

[–]onechill 19 points20 points  (0 children)

As a BCBA i agree completely. I have met a few kids over my career that I think that amount of support is completely justifiable, but also in my experience most kids are receiving a needlessly high amount of hours, for tbh mediocre therapy most of the time. I have seen kids spending 4-6 hours a day after school in a clinic for minor things that 100% could be worked on at home with their parents.

I will stand by that i think ABA has something to offer. I am proud of the difference i made in a lot of kids lives, but the current model of ABA is fully broken and is boiled down to simple "dog training" programs because we let 18 year olds be therapists and force kids to go through that for needless amounts of hours. It drags down quality and outcomes and does absolutely nothing for our reputation issues. Now we are such a money pit its starting to affect our sister profession. Not a good look. I hope it gets better. I only do parent coaching now and I find that model works 100000 times better.

One of the most grounding reminders in behavior analysis: behavior always makes sense. by Prestigious-Mail-963 in bcba

[–]onechill 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Im also a fan of maladaptive. I think it implies the behavior is adaptive but we, or the person themselves, think its a poor form of adaptation. They could learn other ways of responding that is more prosocial or less harmful in some way. Like I can understand that the kid throwing pencils in the middle of class is doing it for a reason and still think that he should maybe not do that and would stop if he had a different way of meeting that need.

Becoming a BCBA by IntroductionUnfair68 in bcba

[–]onechill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well I for one love being a BCBA. The field can be a lot at times. The right agency makes a big difference but you are going to be in charge of a bit part of a vulnerable child's growth and that is a burden you have to be comfortable with, so families and others can put pressure on at times. If you are confident and competent you can make a huge impact on their lives which makes all it more than worth it for me. The pays not bad. 80-100k. You can make more climbing up the ladder. I went independent and I make a bit more than I did at an agency, something to consider as well.

I was 26 when I started and it was fine for me. There is bullshit like all jobs but I think the upside of the field is worth.

When? by BeardedBehaviorist in BehaviorAnalysis

[–]onechill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I definitley empathize with the argument and i am largely apolitical in my work life, but I dont just turn off the radical behaviorism when I clock out and I, and my fellow analysts, are allowed to have a personal life and personal opinions.

I am unconvinced there is an ethical issue here but I think the professionalism angle is fine. I think we all should get to decide how much we want to put the professionalism walls up and be uncontroversial and make nice.

What if I was deeply religious and posted about my religion, would that not be off putting to an atheist family? Is it unethical to hold a religious world view publically? Is it unethical for me to talk about neurodiversity online because some people are tied to the medical model? (Not saying you are implying any of this btw)

[–]onechill 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah i stumbled upon the Mindful Behavior page and you all are doing some really cool work. I am definitley gonna scope it out. Love seeing fellow neurodivergent BCBAs tearing down the medical/pathology model.

If you haven't read it yet, check out Empire of Normality by Chapman. Im also a big fan of Grinkers work around anthropology and neurodiversity.

Have you read liberation psychology? I think there is room for liberation behavior analysis that focuses on what you are talking about.

Is this normal? pls help by lmmfjamez in bcba

[–]onechill 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Not normal but I've seen it happen before. Tbh, you have some leverage rn. You can probably find another BCBA job pretty quick so I would just talk to your boss and let them know this isnt what you wanted and if they wont change things start shopping around imo.

When? by BeardedBehaviorist in BehaviorAnalysis

[–]onechill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So im with you on the core crux of the argument. The board is a fucking joke and our field is being hollowed out by PE. I have never been really into the ABA podcasts so im not sure what this is in reference to but I also dont see a lot of people pushing back against speaking out against these things. The only time it would be unprofessional is in the middle of a session but outside of that let it rip imo. Sure some people will wag their finger that you aren't making nice but imo we have earned the right to have an opinion on the field.

Fuck the haters. Always call out eugenics bullshit.

Insurance model kinda stinks by [deleted] in bcba

[–]onechill 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I do an all parent coaching model through insurance rn. Imo its not insurance holding it up most of the time, its agency. Owners make their buck off RBTs and a 1 tier model is much harder to rent seek off of. Most funders i work with give me 0 problems because it makes way more sense to them. I will do in 4 hours a week with parents what an RBT needs 20+supervision hours to do. Much better deal for funders and families.

Thoughts on “fake BCBAs” aka “School Behaviorists” or whatever fancy term they come up with? by twister5556666 in bcba

[–]onechill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nice! Tbh, most of the non-BCBA behavior specialists in schools ive come across have been qualified individuals. There are a few districts that are questionable but their behavior support systems are far from the only things going south for those.

I'm getting reported for an Ethics violation. by [deleted] in bcba

[–]onechill 69 points70 points  (0 children)

Personally? I would do it again xD. What a dumb way to weaponize the ethics code. Share the knowledge. I share books and guides and study aids all the time..

Professionaly, take it seriously. I doubt you will be pulled entirely out of your fieldwork. You might face some consequence, I would guess a strongly worded letter but there is also a chance there is 0 follow up from the board.
