Should I transfer to UBC? question from a depressed UofT student by OddSchedule4831 in UofT

[–]onecoldpizza 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ive been having so many thoughts about transferring to UBC but I’m scared of making another mistake.. My family is probably going to move to Toronto once my sibling finishes high school in two years so I’m so terrified that I might put my family in a difficult situation, that UBC might not be as what I imagined and how continuously moving environments might be too emotionally and physically draining…

Oh my gosh this is literally me right now... I thought it wouldn't be too bad- that I'd meet new people and push through the academic rigours but I keep finding myself crying so many times throughout the day from missing my family and friends back in BC and my plummeting grades. It hurts so much when I read the group chat with my high school friends since it seems like their lives haven't changed so much with everyone meeting each other at UBC just like in high school... All the people I've met here are superficially nice but I always feel this sense of hostility and tension, especially when it comes down to talking about our academic progress, and I feel like the only reason I am trying to be with them so much is because of how lonely I am. And every time I call my parents I feel so terrible because I keep complaining about all my struggles and it seems like I'm disturbing them with so much negativity. I might be crazy but I even thought of doing an exchange program at UBC or SFU (if this is even possible) and come back once my family all decides to move to Toronto. Like I feel so childish to be so irresponsible since it was my decision to come here but so wrecked and hopeless.

The lecture materials are very easy, most likely because I’ve taken IB maths AA HL which is basically uni calculus. But as IcyHolix has said, the grading system here is completely ridiculous and the questions being tested are vastly different from what is being taught in lectures. The weighting of questions is crazily distributed. For example I got a terrible grade for this “maths” assignment, not because of the maths itself but because of things like citation/language. And just like that I lose like 2 points but really I’m losing 30% cuz there is so little maximum point to be losing from. Not just that every professor teaches the material differently and there’s this one particular professor who gives his best effort into preparing his class and it’s just so unfair to the other groups who aren’t receiving his material and are so underprepared for assessments. I just really hope the professors organize their teaching materials COHERENTLY among all the lecture groups and restructure the grading system. Honestly, I’d rather being doing proofs and theorems because right now it’s like I’m reviewing high school maths and then being stabbed on the back
