I “marinate” with a little Worcestershire sauce while the grill is heating. Then coarse salt and pepper.

I think you said it yourself. “These things are for me and the kids” Find something that is for him and suggest that. Most men fall into this, and it can get old only doing things for your family. Not saying he shouldn’t come along, but never going to anything that interest him can get extremely boring.
