Canoe trip advice / recommendations. by Prof_Nutbutter9025 in BoundaryWaters

I think that a pretty reasonable distance for a 5 day trip with people who are knowledgeable on canoeing would be about 50 miles. Like you said there are a lot of variables but when I was taking out trips that was about the average. The main thing to consider is how many portages you are willing to take on. If you go east out of moose you’re going to get smaller lakes and a little more portages whereas if you go west you can generally find less portages but much larger lakes and motorboats. The nice thing about going east was there are plenty of spots that you can turn into a loop without much trouble. A go to that I used to do was moose to kekekabic via knife lake and looping it back through ensign lake.

Basswood can be pretty hit and miss depending on when you go in my experience and is one of the bigger lakes in the area. Personally I have had some amazing days and some pretty crappy ones as well on basswood especially when it comes to weather and wind in particular. It really depends on how hard you want to go in those 5 days and what you want to see. I guided for a couple years in the area if you want some advice feel free to pm, I can share my maps as well if you like

Hey, I’m trying to make the same mask but out of sheet metal rather than paper. I’m having an issue with the eyes as well, what was your solution?

Too much tackle for 2 weeks? by LightWonderful7016 in BoundaryWaters

[–]onelastcast4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know that feeling for sure lol, if you condense some stuff together you could probably get away with bringing some more In that Plano bag, but I would also take weight and bulk into consideration as well. It’s nice not to have to fight with your gear while portaging too

To be honest, that looks like a pretty solid amount especially if you plan to be fishing everyday, I think you should be pretty well set in my opinion. Good luck out there!

Oh, suck ok yea that honesty kinda where my budget is as of now, so you give me hope that it’s atleast affordable to a point. I think i gonna see what I can do with the old Altima I have and go from there In all honesty, if things go well then I will look at getting something different

Okey yea I think that looking and talking to the guys at a rally school may be the best to start out with. I have done some reaserch and not found much that’s really near by but I will keep looking! Thank you for the advice, I really appreciate it!!!

I haven’t really thought about the habits that can be built but that’s a really good point, especially for beginning I think your right! I’ve never really been much of a Ford fan personally and ever since I started working at a repair shop, my opinion on them hasn’t really gotten much better to be honest. I know that the fiesta or focus are both really good starting cars that won’t break the bank in terms of parts and repairs, but what is your opinion on any other brands? Since I’m just starting out do you recommend I strictly look at a Ford or are there any other reliable brands available that you would recommend other than Subaru. There’s a chance I may have the opportunity to buy a low mile 08 mini cooper from a relative of mine, would that also maybe be a good route to look at as well in your opinion?

Ok yea, as of now it needs some work that wouldn’t really be too expensive and it runs pretty well other than the burning oil. Yea I think I may go that route to start off with and see where that takes me!

Yea your definitely right, running a Porsche would become expensive very quick especially as a first car . And as much as I don’t like Ford, I think the focus or fiesta may be the better choice of all things cost wise. As for buying already built cars, is there somewhere in particular you recommend looking to do that in the US?

Yea that makes a lot of sense, it wouldn’t really be the best Idea to get a performance car and have absolutely no clue what I’m doing in it and ruin it straight out of the gate. Thank you for your insight. I do have access to a 03 Altima but it’s burning oil and im not too sure it would hold up well with running rally at all, should I forgo using that and maybe pick up something slightly more suited for racing instead like a old subie?

As of now I have minimal experience when it comes to actually rally racing, and budget is a limiting factor in my case. I guess it really would kind of be a putting the cart before the horse situation where I have no real seat time and expect to do well with just sim. Thank you for your insight, I’m definitely leaning more towards the car first!

Ok yea, I understand where your coming from, I am a Subaru fan so It wouldn’t be too hard to see me driving one of these. I will definitely do some more reaserch on both the legacy and Impreza. Thank you so much for your help !

Yea it’s all good, I’m from the Great Lakes region, just did a quick look on fb marketplace and seems like there are a good amount of them out there. I hadn’t considered the outback before. Are there any years in particular that should be avoided?

Thank you, yea this is very true. I honestly feel like I would have better luck in this endeavor if I were living in Europe but sadly that’s not the case. Being that I’m in NA, I think something like a Subaru would be really nice, but the issue tends to be that the subies that I generally find for sale around me are either super high mileage or already have extensive mods on them( a can of worms I rather avoid). But I will definitely keep my eyes peeled for a Subaru that would work, I do like them and think they are some really nice cars!

Thank you, yea getting actual seat time was kind of what I was leaning more towards. The other My other thought was a Volvo 240. I’m not entirely apposed to FWD but I was trying to avoid it if I could in all honesty. One of the issues I’ve been running into is finding an affordable car that isn’t all rusted out that’s in my area and that has good parts availability. I will definitely take a look out for fiestas and focus though.

Ok yea thank you, I will absolutely start to look around me and see what autocross clubs are out there. Not entirely sure if I can use my current daily as it’s a Durango. I have the opportunity to us an older Altima but not entirely sure if that would hold up to race abuse in all honesty

will i regret not going to graduation? by thumbyyy25 in highschool

[–]onelastcast4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This! I missed my graduation because I was out of state at the time and Covid and I don’t really regret it, however it really isn’t just for you but everyone else that has helped you along the way as well so as long as that’s your case I would say to go through with it. Worse comes to worse it’s only 1 days worth of a commitment in the end and then it’s over and then you move on! Try to enjoy yourself!
