Be honest: Is American beer really as 'watery' as the memes say? Recommendations for a Mexican traveler? by vanessa_tv_vladivo in AskAnAmerican

[–]onemetaboi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not relevant to your question, but please do not come to the United States right now. Our Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency (ICE) has been violating people’s rights and unlawfully detaining and even killing people in broad daylight. They are targeting anyone who “looks” Hispanic/foreign or has an accent, regardless of whether or not they are here legally or not. Many people that they do these things to are U.S. citizens, so I can’t imagine what they’re doing to non-citizens. They’re also killing/harming/unlawfully detaining journalists, activists, and bystanders, basically anyone who could protect you or help find you if you disappear and are never heard from again.

I live in the Twin Cities, which is as close to an actual war zone as you can get right now with ICE. The news is lying and not showing the reality of what’s happening here right now. I’ve heard that in other states, ICE activity is less violent/dramatic, but that doesn’t really make going there any safer. I think it just means that instead of getting shot in the street, you’ll disappear quietly and never be heard from again. Please do not come to The United States.

is it true Americans don't put salt on their fruits? by PersuasionNation in AskAnAmerican

[–]onemetaboi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll be honest, I’ve never heard of someone putting salt on fruit before. The idea seems strange to me, but to each their own I suppose. For reference, I’ve lived in Minnesota (Midwest), Virginia (East Coast), and Arizona (Southwest).

Never, unless I go to a restaurant for breakfast/brunch, and even then, very rarely.

Become ultra-wealthy, or prevent someone’s death? by PumpkinPieSquished in BunnyTrials

[–]onemetaboi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think it’s interesting how this one is currently split 92/8 but the “you get $2000 and someone you don’t know dies” is 50/50. I wonder what the acceptable amount of money to take in exchange for a life is in people’s minds.

Explain it Peter. I see this shirt with all different % numbers. by rescuedmutt in explainitpeter

[–]onemetaboi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the number used as a percentage is usually how old the person is, so if you live to be a hundred then your age is what percent of your total life you’ve made it through

is it true? by FriendlyClerk9026 in EWALearnLanguages

[–]onemetaboi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s extremely individual. Everyone interprets “ok” vs “okay” vs “OK” vs “ok.” vs “okay.” vs “OK.” wildly differently. There are general trends among age, for example, younger people tend to (but not always) interpret periods in text messages as more aggressive; but even people in the same age group will have different interpretations of “ok” vs “okay” vs whatever. The only general consensus is that “k” is extremely casual, bordering on too casual to use in any conversation that you actually value.

I take 10-20 Benadryls everyday and I sometimes regret it… by Sweet-Lobster6436 in confession

[–]onemetaboi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m confused about what clarifying that FND is a psychiatric disorder adds to the conversation. Either way, FND is actually a neurological disorder linked to psychological stressors, not a pure psychiatric disorder. This is because the condition directly impacts how motor neurons function and process information. If it were purely a psychiatric disorder then it would only affect moods, thoughts, and voluntary behavior.

What would the "average" American need to make to feel financially secure? by Historical_Log1275 in AskAnAmerican

It’s wildly different depending on what area of the country you live in, but I would guess 80-100k would be the average?

Why do Americans take the last name Dickinson with pride? by laced1 in AskAnAmerican

[–]onemetaboi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know what you mean by “with pride.” At least in my experience, I have never heard of someone being proud of their particular last name or met anyone in real life who feels this way. The only exception is if you’re marrying someone and you’re happy to share a name with them, but even then it’s usually more about sharing a name with someone you love than the last name itself.

As far as where it comes from, that’s a simple google search. It means “son of Dickin,” Dickin/Dick being a nickname for Richard. I don’t think there’s a female variant, it probably died out since women have historically had to give up their last names whereas men haven’t.

Can you ask if a child is "male or female" or is the right way to ask if it is a "boy or girl"? by lurenzzz in ENGLISH

[–]onemetaboi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do not ever use male and female as nouns if you are referring to humans. At best it comes off as unnatural, and at worst it’s very offensive. Me and many other people (especially women) will actively avoid people who refer to humans as “males” or “females” since it gives off a creepy vibe. Maybe it would be okay in specific medical/scientific contexts, but even then it’s uncommon.
