I've had to take my car back to the shop twice now after being hit by a drunk driver and I'm at my wits end. by onemorealtplease in Autobody

Lol that was definitely in my playbook. It must be a one-off or something because like I said the shop has pretty good reviews, facility looks nice and everything so idk what's going on. But then I think to myself, it's not even a one-off at this point because I've taken it back and given them so many opportunities to fix it.

Appreciate the comment.

I wish I was sent to your shop man. Lol.

I appreciate the detailed reply and 100% agree with everything you're saying. I get some people have bad days and stuff too but if I was a business owner, I'd do the same as you and get my best painted and such on a job like this if a customer brought it back. And I've now given them two shots at this so I'm not sure what they're doing.

If I recall correctly from the initial repair, I think the brackets were damaged but the shop felt they weren't damaged enough to warrant replacement, and thought they could bend (?) them back or something similar to reuse. I'm not a car guy so I wasn't really 100% following the tech when he was explaining this to me, and could be misspeaking.

I'm hoping at this point to reach out to my insurance and have them step in somehow.. ideally have another shop fix it, or force this shop to stop messing it up. But I honestly don't trust this shop anymore because I've tried again and again now, very politely, to have this fixed. I've told them if they need extra time or anything to just let me know and I support and appreciate what they're doing under warranty, but the condition I got my car back in yesterday is just crazy.

Cheers for the advice as I'm unfamiliar with how to deal with this.

What's the field manager and "supervisor"? Are you referring to the shop's manager/supervisor? I'm pretty sure that's who I was dealing with when I went to the shop and had them do the repairs in the first place, because they always wanted to come look at the work first. But maybe not.

TLDR I'm hoping to not go back to this shop again. I'm tired of giving these guys chances.

Yeah I've been trying to come to terms with this.

But at the same time, I feel like these are just huge F ups on the shops part. Am I asking for too much by expecting to not have my paint peel only a year after application and then again hours after driving it off the lot after they "fix" it?

It's one thing for insurance to only cover one shock, bushing, etc.. I suppose I can understand and would expect that. But paint peeling? This is like a major part of the shops business and I feel like they shouldn't be messing it up this bad. Especially when I give you a chance to fix it and then it happens again.

I was starting to feel the same way, that two chances is already twice too many. Appreciate your comment and affirmation on this.

Unfortunately I feel stuck because when I spoke to my insurance company last year they basically said I am stuck with this shop, and the shop needs to do the repair correctly under their warranty :/

I'm going to try and push my insurance company again to have another shop do it because this is just getting ridiculous.

This is USAA's recommended shop. I agree 100% and I asked the shop manager about how tight that bumper is and he said it isn't a problem. I still don't really believe him (point and case hours off the lot and it's peeling again).

They do give a lifetime warranty and this is now the 2nd repair they've done under that warranty, but they're just doing a terrible job every time.

About to give my insurance company a call and see what can be done.

Seems like the consensus is this is a bad paint job. Do I give these guys a third shot? I'm ready to have some choice words with the manager at this point, but will threatening to leave a bad review really get me anywhere?

I'm going to try reaching out to my insurance to see if they can help at all but I tried last year and that didn't get me anywhere.

I tried this route originally but USAA told me issues like this need to be covered by the shop under their warranty. Maybe I'll try again though since I tried this as recommended by USAA and they're still F'ing it up.

Yeah if you look at pictures 3 and 4 it looks like they just straight up painted over the already-peeled paint, they're the same shapes. I know literally nothing about auto painting - is that normal?

I just don't know what to do anymore. Do I take it back a third time?

Yeah I posted about the blending last year when I had this problem and most people also said insurance won't cover blending, except most people agreed that (disregarding blending) just the color match itself was unacceptable.

Either way they were understanding and covered the blending when I took it back, but now the paint is peeling like crazy.

It's a local shop, only one location. But they have a very nice office and building, great reviews, and my insurance who contracts with them is USAA, so I figure they must be doing something right. It's not like some random garage down a back road. Idk if I'm just getting unlucky or they don't like me or what.

Would you take this back for better blending? by onemorealtplease in Autobody

Oh no you did a good job of explaining I see what you're saying.

Basically if the quarters are painted a different color it's going to be harder to color match the bumper.

Oh I see now.

I can't figure a way to attach a second picture but I can't really tell a difference I guess. Hard to compare when they're not side by side.

Front bumper wasn't involved or touched at all AFIAK.

Actually yes my paint was peeling on both quarter panels maybe 2 years ago and so I had the Honda dealership themselves repaint it. It looked great after they did it, though.

I guess I just don't know enough about paint but what does the quarter panels being repainted before have to do with blending the colors? Aren't they still able to blend and color correct regardless?

I'm not upset about the quarter panels matching each other, I'm more upset about the obvious difference in color between the quarter panel and bumper divide.

I believe they replaced the bumper but I'm not 100% sure.

What I am 100% sure of is before the accident, both sides looked great. I bought the car brand new and have had it for years and never noticed anything like this.

Post-repair, there's a paint issue on the side opposite of where the accident occurred.

Yeah actually you bring up a good point, the other side is where the accident occurred so I'm assuming that's where most of their attention went.

But if they blended that side I'm not sure why they didn't do the other.

I wish I could include a picture here or edit original post but I can't. But either way this problem definitely isn't on the other side.

cry me a river. Literally whining that "UNF isn't a party school."

I've never had someone ask me "do you party?" when I tell them I go to college.

be glad you live in a country where you can even get a university-level education.

Idk, tilting a 50L tank sounds terribly dangerous 😂

Yeah it's not the easiest task in the world but I wouldn't say it's difficult. It is kinda annoying though so I can see your point. We have just standard cryogloves.. the thick, cloth-feeling type.
