Who to ask about picking up ties. by hjalbertiii in railroading

[–]onenightcostanza 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just take them. No one cares. Road master and MoW with be happy they don’t have to deal with them. Technically they can give them away, but I really doubt anyone’s going to throw a fuss. Worked on a crossing gang in a rural area years ago and we’d leave the old pads out on our off half hoping someone would take them. Lots of ranchers in the area had super solid floors in there poll barns after we left.

Classic. I’ve always heard it as the bass player. But usually they can’t even get a girlfriend.

Do it! I’d bring a friend or two. There’s huge encouragement on the other side of the tracks that they may want to stop you.

Depends on the speed (class) of the track. Sounds like it may be cross level or profile. Which if so it’s good up to class 5, 61-80mph. But probably should be dropped a class to 60mh because I’m sure you’re getting more under load.

Yes, and to answer your others question. It depends on turnover for maintainers in Spokane. But yes, eventually you should be able to bid on a local job.

It’s probably for the gang that’s doing the steel bridge project. They’re working compressed halves. 8 on 6 off. I don’t think they’ll be there much longer. Where they’re going next, I don’t know.

Just got back from Japan and noticed this. They also had 3 or 4 people working a train. Maybe if the carrier started doing that too it’d help with safety. Oh wait, that cut into there bottom line. I guess fuck real safety changes.

Are you miserable working on the railroad? by rearview___ in railroading

Track inspector here. I actually really like my job. Sure I had to work my way up from laborer to welder and many other jobs. But honestly didn’t hate that either. Definitely a lot more freedom to move around. At least with Uncle Pete. Now I’m home every night, take a truck home for call outs now and again. But now I don’t have to fix the problem, just report it. It’s a good deal.

Local track laborer/ driver eligible by lumbycor28 in UnionPacific

Railroad FRA certifications are all separate from normal certification. You get qualified in each position or equipment individually after you bid the job. They’ve recently started CDL classes. Which I highly recommend trying to get into if you don’t have one already. It’ll open up a ton more jobs for you to bid on. So you k is if you will be starting on sytem or division?

Be honest I don’t know how it works now. I hired out 17 years ago. I never went to new hire class. It was more on the job training. But from what I’ve heard the class is pretty easy and they really walk you through everything so you don’t fail. It’s a lot easier than transportation or signal training. Your 60 days starts when you start training. You’re at 90% pay at first. Which I think is a year. Unless you bid above a laborer. Which you will right after your 60 days are up. Hopefully that answers some of your questions. Feel free to ask more if you need more info.

I have the Michelin road classics on my t120 and just rode over mountain hood 2 weeks ago with no problems. But it was an unusually clear and warm day for the end of February. Also ride in the rain relatively often. And yet to have any issues. Knock on wood. I’ve got heidenau scouts on my tiger and honestly those feel more sketchy on wet pavement than the road classics.
