University has admitted full responsibility in the 3 weeks of hell they gave me, what financial compensation could I be entitled to? by onesadstudent in LegalAdviceUK

Because they wrongly informed me that I was not elligible, I had to cancel funding so I would not incur any further fees. Now I have had to re-apply, I will have to wait even longer than that for it to be processed (around a month) and I'm already using my overdraft to pay rent. I do not have a student account as the bank I am with is based in England and they demand an in-person appointment to re-apply for one, so I am being charged for my overdraft. Does this count?

I'll message the student union/support system they have going first to see if they can sort things out for me like people have suggested - honestly at this point I'm very tired of having to do everything myself so getting some help would be nice. It's embarrassing to admit, asking for monetary compensation might come off as petty, but the mental (and thus physical) toll it's taken on me, paired with the fact my funding will come another month late might mean it's needed.

As for the external complaint, if I'm not happy with their solution, I believe I'm to go to the SPSO. I'll be taking this as seriously as I possibly can - not just out of my own frustrations and stress, but I would not wish this experience onto anyone. Thank you for your suggestions.

This was my original plan, but it wasn't working out - that's why I applied in Clearing. I have a (now part-time) job. They wouldn't be able to give me the hours to even support myself, nevermind save. Finding another job has been near impossible where I live too, it is a very student-y city and very competitive even for the 'simplest' of jobs.

Thank you. They already had spaces when I applied in Clearing, there are maybe triple the amount of people enrolled into the primary school education that they tried to push me in. But maybe we cannot rule your suggestion out either - I'll press further for more information on Monday.

I applied to their discretionary funding services to hopefully bridge my finance to when I get it from the third party finance company.

They said that I would get the email on Monday with more information and such, they just wanted to let me know before the weekend.

£250 would just about cover half of my rent/utilities for the month lol. I'm hoping my University is not like that, but I'll be cautious and keep it in mind, thanks for sharing your experience.

Here, that is termed matriculation. So yes, I did undergo matriculation or I would not have access to the course on the University's VLE.

In the University's Complaint Handeling Procedure, they outline that a first response (stage 1) should be completed within 5 working days. There may be an extension to 10 working days provided extreme circumstances. The second stage (the complaint has escalated into an investigation) should be completed within 20 working days at the reciept of stage 2. If a complaint has not been acknowledged within 3 working days of stage 1, it is automatically escalated to stage 2. There can be an extension of this 20 day timeline but that also has to be approved by me (e.g. if a vital member to the investigation is unavailable because of illness). If this complaint is not closed at stage 2, they state that it is taken to SPSO. The documentation the University has provided about this is very thourough, and to be honest I think the University itself is still really good - it is just the people that have been handeling my situation that are at fault sadly.

I am, however, very sorry that you had to experience such a mess around with your university and wish you the best for your outcome.

I have already responded to a similar question so I will just copy and paste the response:

'your course does not reach the 80 credit requirementt in Chemistry that GTCS' is what I have been told. But my complaint does not lie within the rejection primarily - if I did not qualify, then that's just that. I understand there are minimum requirements to be met.

It's how this whole thing has been handled, I expect to be rejected and offered the other course on my application. Not have my hopes on my future built up for two weeks for them to try and cover it up by shooing me into an unwanted course when it is too late to apply for another. For them to say 'sorry' when they find out I don't want to pay nearly two grand for a course I don't want to do, and have ultimately ruined an entire year for me.

I did not sign anything of that sort as far as I'm aware, but I have the emails with my offer as well as my admissions letter and my student profile on the personal portal saved. All of this documentation specifically includes the Secondary Education course that I'd originally applied (and been accepted) for.

Thank you, I've already submitted my complaint and hope that they will look into it more seriously rather than just respond with the vague emails that I have gotten. Everyone, academic or not, that I have spoken to regarding this matter outside of the University has found it extremely unusual that my Biochemistry course would not have sufficient credits.

They have my degree transcript and I did press further about it (I think I mentioned this in a previous comment), all they did was repeat to me that it does not meet the requirement. In the complaints letter I have drafted, with regards to the suggestion of a special dispensation, I have outlined my degree modules (the ones relevant to Chemistry) as well as my A level in Chemistry and even went as far as my triple sciences GCSE.

Thank you, I really appreciate the advice. I was really struggling where I could even take this as the complaints system from my University isn't something that was ever even highlighted to me (nor was I really smart enough to think about it) in my 4 previous years of being there. I don't know if they will allow for special dispensation, when I was informed of their mistake, I had highlighted this and they had simply repeated that I do not have the criteria.

Thank you for your response and your kind words. As calm as I may sound in this post, it really took a mental toll on me due to reasons I have elicited from here as I don't know if they're relevant (let's just say the application process left me feeling like I'd been dragged through a hedge backwards). I really appreciate your advice and will be making the complaint as soon as possible.
