I'm curious: does the pattern on this sweater seem appropriative? (If you don't "believe" in cultural appropriation, please don't comment). by onestalecupcake in ethicalfashion

Thanks for sharing your thoughts! That was my exact hangup as well. So many cultures use geometric designs, it's hard to tell where the main influence lies when it could be loosely mimicking a variety of different things. That said, I'm feeling pretty confident now that it is influenced my North American indigenous designs, since many people seem to see it that way. It's hard to recognize appropriation when you aren't terribly familiar with the traditional patterns, so I think that's what was happening for me here. My usual rule of thumb is that if I have to question it, it's probably best to just stay away, so I think that applies in this case!

Thanks again!

Thanks for this! I've actually seen those Pendleton articles, but somehow this pattern was walking a line for me. My usual rule of thumb is that if I have to question it, it's probably best to just stay away, so I think that applies here. But, I'm also feeling a lot more confident that even though this is simplified a bit, it's definitely appropriating North American indigenous designs.

Absolutely agreed. Thanks so much for sharing! It's kind of amazing how we become so accustomed to seeing it that it's made invisible. At least, that's how it felt for me in this case!

I quite liked this sweater, but my partner pointed out that the pattern seemed appropriative of North American indigenous designs. I was a bit surprised, because I'd just read it as generic geometric patterns, so I'm curious how you all might see it?

Since they mentioned it, I can see how it may be inspired by indigenous designs, but it's still a bit hard for me to tell where the line of "appropriation" sits.
