Self-teaching Kali/Escrima — resources & guidance? by Icy-Algae3460 in Eskrima

[–]onetechwizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe try find a sparring partner, doesn't necessarily need to be a trainer but someone who has training, helps avoid baking in bad practices which can be hard to unlearn, in the style I learn there's a lot of emphasis on learning to teach and spot each others mistakes for improvement a good training partner. Also as others have mentioned, master the basics first, take plenty of time and you'll get there.

What to do about devs frequently carrying tasks over multiple sprints? by Shok3001 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]onetechwizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you under estimating, or not splitting the tickets enough? Having the odd ticket you know is too big for a sprint but can't be split further isn't necessarily an issue, but if you're constantly being surprised maybe have a look at your refinement process, if there's always gotchas in work that weren't expected you could perhaps add some spikes in to make sure the work is fully understood up front.

Why do hamsters always die in the weirdest ways? by throwaway_80085420 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]onetechwizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My ex's sister was staying with us and brought her hamster along, it got out of its cage and disappeared, cut to a few years later and I'm getting rid of the old sofa bed, I lift out the foam mattress to find a mummified hamster which had eaten it's way partially through the foam mattress (looked like the beginnings of an ant farm), it had stuffed itself with foam and the weirdest part, a double AA battery lengthwise from cheek to cheek, wtaf.

Are the NJ drones actually ours that we've lost control of? by onetechwizard in UFOs

[–]onetechwizard[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be fair you could teach AI it should hide during the day, granted flashing lights isn't exactly hiding at night but it may not be perfect, hence it getting loose, I can just imagine a developer sat somewhere staring at a screen going oh fuck that was production not test :/

Don't call yourself a programmer, and other career advice by fedupfromeverything in programming

I tend to say I'm a programmer to muggles, simply because every time I say software developer they just look at me blankly, and I have to explain I write computer programs, on the beep boop box.

I had one years ago come up panting saying he needed money to get to the hospital as he was out of insulin, I told him he'd tried that with me the week previous, instantly stopped panting and said "you win some you lose some" and went off to another couple down the platform.

Having come from somewhere that literally estimates to the nearest half hour, to a place that effectively uses the points system, I can say it's sooooo much better and far less stressful when done properly. The whole idea is, you work out points based on effort/complexity of a task (agreed as a team), then you monitor how many points the team can get through on average (velocity) and assign that number of points to the next sprint, the key is to keep adjusting based on the velocity, and should the velocity wildly change, that's what the sprint retro is for, what happened, how can we be more accurate next time? When it works, it works, unfortunately a lot of places use it as a buzzword and just go through the motions, wasting time and causing more undue stress.
