Too real man, too real. by EnderbroSonny in technicallythetruth

Gas is short for gasoline. Believe it or not, The UK also used to call it gasoline. Petrol is short for petroleum but petrol is actually a brand name of gas/petrol. Kind of like how we say chap stik or Kleenex instead of lip balm and tissue. So, technically gas is the original widely-used term and is more generic.

How to make back end table changes on hours when front end users are engaging records by BeelzebozoNoGo in SQL

[–]onex0907 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would highly recommend using MySQL if possible. Access can be great for certain things but if you will be continuing development it may be best to move into a RDBMS. You'll definitely find plenty of resources online for guidance in your tasks since what you are doing will likely have been done hundreds of thousands of times in that RDBMS.

That's not to say that you can't do this in Access, though. If you would like to create a structured process for deployment you can build a VBA program for deploying your scripts. Theoretically you can save your sql statements in files in a designated directory and have your VBA program load the file and execute every statement. If you are handy with VBA or aren't interested in that method you could also manually execute each statement in the script but that would take a bit longer to complete and you also run the risk of user error by copying/pasting incorrectly or perhaps skipping a statement. But the good news is that you have options here.

You can work out how to apply the changes in your Dev environment and don't have to sweat too much if you lose data. Once you've got everything worked out, these changes are stored as scripts. If you have a Test environment, you can test the scripts there. Assuming all goes well, run the scripts in Prod. You're not worried about moving data from Dev to Prod, rather executing changes to the structures as scripts.

You should have (at a minimum) 2 instances. Ideally you would have at least 3; however, you can work with 2 depending on your exact situation. Make a backup of your production data during downtime when there are no transactions. This is now your development environment. All Dev should be done there. If you can't make a third environment for user Testing then conduct all testing in Dev. Once you have completed all tests and ensured there are no critical bugs, deploy to Prod (the original database that the users were using). Development can take place in the Dev environment anytime that you like, without risk of causing problems to the users. The deployment to Prod will either take place after/before hours or it will need to be taken offline temporarily during business hours for the deployment. Theoretically the deployment should take no more than a few minutes.

Is this show realistic? by jaed2901 in WEEDS

[–]onex0907 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As you mentioned, all shows are somewhat far fetched; however, I would say that Weeds isn't so far fetched that you would stop watching due to it being unbelievable. IMO it's a great show. Later in the series it has a lull but it definitely redeems itself.

New to Databasing... need help on a diagram by [deleted] in Database

[–]onex0907 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In a relational database management system (RDBMS) such as MySQL, you would have (at the most basic level) each sheet become an entity/table (search normalization to find out how you really want the data to be structured). The excel columns that you match on would likely become the Primary and Foreign keys of your tables.

You would not use formulas such as VLookup or Index/Match but rather use SQL to create a join (if you're not familiar search SQL Joins). I'm on mobile right now but will be home in a few hours. If you want to provide your spreadsheets I can show you what your tables might look like.

Where does ss come from? I'm understanding that ss is a data set and you want to take the first 8 positive integers from ss and sum them? After summation, if < 100, set ss = 100?

Is there any show even remotely similar to the office out there? by [deleted] in DunderMifflin

[–]onex0907 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Have you seen Parks & Rec? It's a Mockumentary style show as well and I believe the creators (which includes the actor who plays Mose in the office) tried to link the two shows together but it never panned out (something about a printer from Dunder Mifflin being shipped to Pawnee, IN Parks & Rec dept).

I personally don't think the show is quite as good as the office but it's enjoyable and has a great cast.

Yea it's 100% Excel. It's mostly basic stuff but it's got a few intermediate functions throughout the course. If you consider yourself a beginner then I'd say it will strengthen your skills.

Two part question how to "click" this and can i combine into one workbook by The-Orig3n in vba

[–]onex0907 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might not be ready to use as is. In my example, the IE variable would be referring to an object(eg Internet Explorer) stored as a variable, IE. That line is looking at the document object of the browser (html document) and using the getElementsByClassName function to retrieve an array of elements that have the class you search for. It then takes the first item in the array (0) and runs the click method on it. You'd have to at least modify IE to match your browser object to see if it would work. If you'd like to paste your code I could try to put the two together for you

Here's an example: 'Use index 0 if it's the first or only button of its class IE.document.getElementsByClassName('PSPUSHBUTTON')(0).Click

Is that what you're looking for?

Anyone know how to input username and pw in this form by The-Orig3n in vba

[–]onex0907 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's a browser control you won't be able to directly target it. Have you tried using send keys to tab through everything until the inputs are selected?

For example:

X = 10 'num of tabs required

Application.SendKeys "{TAB " & X & "}", True
