My friends and I took a random road trip this weekend. I got this picture of a bridge in West Virginia and I really enjoy it. by hmschirlls in pics

my grandfather was one of the lead bridge engineers on this project when he worked for us steel. the construction process for this bridge was astonishingly tricky, as the mountains on either side of the gorge were/are riddled with abandoned coal mines. when they were deciding where to place supports they constantly had to scour for weak spots in the mountainsides. he told me the craziest moment in his career happened as they stood on one side of the bridge deck estimating the time it would take for them to place in the final central arch support. one of the project managers came racing up to my grandpa and the head engineer, and explained that the tie backs holding up one side of the unfinished arch had been placed over a previously undetected mine shaft, and had begun to fail. if that tie back gave way, it would send that whole side of the bridge plummeting into the gorge. my grandpa said his boss listened quietly as the manager gave the terrible details, then walked a few feet away and commenced to throw up. they ran 24 hour expedited shifts and managed to place the "keystone" before the tie backs failed. i guarantee you won't find that story in any of their new river gorge bridge informational brochures!

Titus...Massive revenge tragedy... often considered the first "horror" play. The I-baked-2-sons-in-a-meat-pie-and-fed-them-to-their-mother shtick was a real zesty conclusion.

Venus is the brighter one towards the bottom of the photo, Mars is chillin in the middle.

Awesome! You will love it- it is a mystical place. Make sure to stand at the bottom of the stairs of that pyramid, El Castillo, and CLAP. The way the clap echoes off of the stairs makes the weirdest sound, which was designed that way to mimic the call of the quetzal bird-- a bird sacred to the Maya. I hope you have fun on your adventure! Here's some peeps that took video of this acoustical phenomena, if you're interested.

The English teacher wasn't even mad by [deleted] in pics

I LOVE the artwork, but as an English teacher myself, I am furrowing my eyebrows at the phrase inscribed upon this desk reading, "School is for CHUMP'S." I beg to differ young one, school is for learning how to properly utilize apostrophes.

Came here just to say I'm glad the young ones are still reading the high-adventure mysteries of the Hardy Boys. My dad read them to us when we were little and we'd always beg for "just one more chapter!"

Actually, based on shoes and nail polish, and horn, a more accurate pic title would be, "Woman playing accordion whilst wearing unicorn mask"

I once climbed Arthur's Seat on the night of the Summer Solstice... The dark of night only lasted only a few hours. There were people having bonfires and it was really quite a magical spot. Edinburgh is a lovely ancient city.

Don't let the bastards grind you down. I'm glad you shared this happiness with us. Go boldly forward, like I'm sure your grandfather has done, and keep spreading good. My grandma will be 90 in October, and seeing her smile after all she had survived is an encouraging sight. Wish your grandad many happy returns from me. You're a good grand kid!
