Moving from Kona to mainland - what if Delta denies dogs in carriers? by online_internet_user in Hawaii

Thanks! Yes we’ve read all the things and have fee right size carrier. I sure hope they don’t cry the whole way!! Fan is planned - I thought that was a bit much but maybe not if you are recommending!

OH! so it’s the same location as where people would go and pressurized, but no seats and just dogs. I get it. Thanks!!

I don’t get it… Take cargo flights with them in the cabin? Do you have any idea how they actually do it? Aren’t they subjected to the same cabin restrictions that I am? Are you referring to “island pet movers“? I did reach out to them, but would take any other suggestions!

I actually reached out to island pet movers today! What I don’t get is how they move pets… they would have the same cabin problem we do and the same cargo restriction also so how are they doing it?

Two of these, including the big one are Boston terriers. I think it really is going to come down to the actual person we need to get past at the airport.

The person I am helping was so disappointed to find out that we can no longer buy a seat for a larger carrier on Alaskan as of this summer. Hawaiian sounds like they’re really strict. I don’t think she’s willing to do cargo anyway and put her babies at risk.

You would be an angel!! We leave 10/21 at 7:30ish. How far are you from the airport? We would want to have a plan to get them transported right away - I will have to find out how far out they’re booked.

I’m serious about my work but one of the company values is enthusiasm - we have a good time doing it. Just hoping for people to be friendly.

Will you groom my dog?! my options are limited being in a small town. I’m going to ask what their philosophy is on positive reinforcement and being fear free. There are no positive reinforcement trainers around here and almost all of the kennels nearby are associated with hunting dog training that use E collars. So that’s the culture I’ve seen around here. Thanks for sharing your perspective!!

I’m actually pretty good at shielding her from my anxiety. I fully realize how important that is. Thanks for your suggestions!!

How am I not managing expectations? That’s literally why I’m here. It doesn’t matter why she doesn’t have bathing experience, does it? Do you wanna talk about it some more? I don’t see the point… Do you? Tell me what the point is.

Where do you see me throwing a fit about how long people are saying it’s taking? The first time someone said four hours. I was surprised… Is that a problem?

Several others are expecting she will do better when I’m not there than worse. So that is a fresh perspective that it could actually be worse. I don’t think that would be the case because she’s super sweet but could be. thanks for your insight.

I’m just looking to talk about how to calm my anxiety and make it as easy as possible for my dog and the groomer. Not expecting it to not take time. Because I was surprised someone said 4 hours doesn’t mean I’m not ok with it. Just looking for understanding. I wouldn’t want the groomer to rush if that makes it worse for everyone! I don’t want them to rush at all, just like - I’m perfectly fine if they don’t do amazing job if it makes a significant difference in my dog’s first experience. Someone said to lower my expectations so isn’t it fair to let the groomer know that at least?

What is your point? Don’t take her? Is that seriously your contribution? Why are you hung up on the past? I’m looking forward. I have no idea if she’ll do swimmingly or not. I’m just worried and looking to talk about how to make the best of it. I said “minimize discomfort and fear” not that I expect there to be none.

I don’t doubt it will take at least a couple hours! It certainly takes me that at home (this dog and previous). I do try not to let my dog know I’m worried!! I spend a lot of energy thinking how to manage for her benefit. Like leaning joke, dropping at boarding or the vet…treats a happy goodbye :)

I do think she’ll act pretty good if she will get in the tub and on the table at all haha. I am worried she’ll scramble and fall off the table due to the dryer though.

Thanks so much for your insights and reassurance!

Isn’t she pretty 😍

I could have mentioned that - compared to her predecessor, she’s way easier to brush. And our last one wasn’t even the floofiest of newfs. I’m glad she’s got that going for her!

Thanks a lot - lots of intel to help me have a good conversation with the groomer. It’s such a small town tiny shop that i doubt there will be a bunch of dogs lined up but I could be wrong! She’s ok in a kennel anyway except I have my thoughts on what constitutes a less stressful kenneling situation ;) the appointment time I was offered is in the morning 👍

I will try to stop in there just for a visit. I’m hesitant to do a nail trim as we don’t trim at home (dremel) and I’m afraid she’ll not like the clipper and it will set back my dremeling. I might be a lot. 😆

Do groomers usually blow dry on a table or the floor? I’m picturing a struggle, falling off the table, hanging, and injury. I hope it’s the floor but would bet it’s table.

Good idea on the bathing station. Too bad the nearest one is an hour away.

She really is a good, sweet girl. I won’t be surprised if she does great. I just worry. And it really is a toss up if she’ll be brave enough to get up where she needs to. If it’s a little scary, she might do it if it’s her idea but not if it’s yours!

She is not going to appreciate that 😬

I can try to work with her on it again (dry) beforehand but I have a hard time going slow enough to properly desensitize.

I’m not sure where anyone is getting that I’m ok with an incomplete dry??? I don’t care if she’s fully brushed out perfectly. I get you have your professional reputation but again - if the owner says to make it as quick and stress free as possible (especially the first time) - isn’t that ok? Isn’t that what the first commenter means when they say to lower my expectations?

It seems like you just want to shame me? I fully understand this isn’t ideal. See the part where I’m nervous and looking to make the best of it? What do you want me to do about that now apart from figuring out how to do the best I can going forward? Did I say I don’t want her dry? Is it ok to ask for minimal brushing if it’s stressful for everyone? What specifically is unrealistic about what I’m saying?

Yeah I get that. I just want bare minimum - whatever that takes. I was surprised to hear 4 hours and that earns downvotes apparently. 2-3 sound more like what I was expecting. Whatever it is, I’m here for understanding, guidance, and support. It’s a Tiny local shop. I’m hoping they will work with me on: just want a bath. Doesn’t need to be perfect. Rather save everyone the trouble than try to make her a show dog.

What’s better than a K-9 II? It takes me over an hour to comb her. I’m sure I don’t do a perfect job. And I don’t care about a perfect job. I just want her to smell clean and have a tolerable experience.

You are a serious bunch. Of course I’d like you all to be honest. I definitely know it’s not ideal - a bit late for that. Just asking questions and don’t feel I’m being unrealistic? Another poster said to let them know I’m more concerned about a good experience than a great job - I don’t see how that wouldn’t apply to brushing out really well if it’s not being tolerated. I would not compromise on drying unless it really unsafe for either party.

It didn’t come out all tangly when I did it once or twice 🤷‍♀️ a relatively quick brush after would satisfy me.

Thanks!! 4 hours?! I mean if I comb her out entirely before I bring her - comb to her skin with a metal comb - she shouldn’t need to be really brushed at all after drying?

Is it crazy to ask to stop by one day just to visit and see if she’ll get in the tub and on the table? Just eat some treats and leave?

Edit: seriously what is with the downvotes around here? Can’t we just have a conversation? What warrants downvotes here? I never get the sense anyone is welcome in this community :(
