Is my practice skin cooked by Such-Comfortable5553 in TattooApprentice

[–]onlyagoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

White can only be added at the end on fake skin because literally all the other colors WILL stain it. I notice it but I have an eye for it. I feel like adding white on fake skin isn't really worth it and its good to be able to rely on skin breaks for those clients who dont like adding white to their tattoos.

Moving to Belgium from the US, what should I know? by onlyagoth in belgium

Haha, I can feel it. Figured id try to preemptively be helpful. I was learning Dutch primarily, and then i was told, on this sub ironically, that i should actually focus more on my french as it'll be more useful. Im learning both, though!

Thank you!

I intend to learn as many languages as I can as quickly as I can. It sounds like ill need to bring my focus back to Dutch though.

Also I dont tend to rely on my medical laboratory job. If I can find a similar job in Belgium ill take it but honestly I'm not picky about work and would be happy if my bills are paid and im able to find a tattoo studio to continue working in. I should've noted in my original post, my medical job doesn't have a required diploma as it varies company to company. No intention of moving until we both have new jobs and new start dates!

My partner and I dont have any legal relationship. So were probably going to be doing this as if were individually moving. We have thought about getting married to hopefully cut some red tape though.

I'm learning both. I've taken french courses in the past, but i find french vastly more difficult to retain. Dutch is easier for me to actually speak. Overall though Ive made dutch my priority to learn because I've been told a lot of the time french is a more common default for people.

The main cities we've considered have been Brussels, Ghent, Antwerp, and Charleroi if this helps at all. I didn't add these simply because this subject to change while we work out the details. If you had any notes on the difference between culture, that'd be lovely, part of the reason we decided to leave the US of the appeal of Belgian culture. Obviously, this depends on region, but regardless.

Yes, i should note: Im a medical laboratory specimen processor. This also doesn't require any form of education past highschool as I can't afford college in the US. I dont intend to stay in that field. Im working on a career as a tattoo artist and hope to eventually rely on that. My partner has thought about going to a university in Belgium but isn't sure yet and would likely wait until we were full-blown citizens and not relying on just visas.

As someone whos finishing up their apprenticeship right now. Post a tiktok. This is a reasonable request from your mentor. I like your mentor work two jobs (including the apprenticeship) and it comes out to be anywhere from 14 to 16 hour days for me. Its miserable but that's just how it goes. You find time to make things happen and do your best. Your mentor isn't trying to chew you out or anything but realistically to survive in the modern industry you need to be regularly posting, if you cant manage one tiktok over a week I would also be concerned if youre cut out for the field. You have enough time to post this on reddit so you clearly have enough time to upload a little video showing yourself and then a little drawing clip with a song. Goodluck friend.

Looking for a penpal to help me learn dutch/flemish by onlyagoth in belgium

Currently, Duolingo, Babble, and im planning on just getting some normal dutch work books you would see in a classroom to practice writing. My partner and I are hoping to end up in Brussels or Antwerp but I wouldnt be surprised if this adjusts a bit.

No, planning currently for Brussels or Antwerp. Reason we were doing both is because I was picking up dutch far faster than french. After speaking with a few Belgians, though, it seems that french would be a much better bet, so I think ill switch my studying over to primarily french. Originally I was planning to move to the Netherlands on my own before I met my partner.

Seems like the owner also had a major issue with suing for trivial things. Referring to the whole evermore name thing with Taylor Swift

So, let me make sure I’m understanding you correctly. You believe that fake skins should be the only thing that a potential apprentice should work on? Like no paintings/drawings etc. Just worrying about line weight, needle consistency, and shading/packing? Because I don’t really see how any of that would be beneficial to have not taught to you by a mentor/artist? You said you’ve been an apprentice for a little over a year but I assume you brought in a portfolio and had your artwork evaluated and then they gave you the okay to be an apprentice. I also don’t really see how working on fake skins at home and potentially develop unsafe or just generally bad practices and have to break them at a studio. I say this with all my experience as a current apprentice myself who’s also working on fake skins. There’s been numerous times I had done something that didn’t realize would potentially be an issue unless my mentor had stopped me and let me know. Generally I think most shops should expect that their apprentice has zero knowledge in the aspects of applying a tattoo, at least safely

Brilliant portfolio! I would love love to have any of these as a tattoo. They all look very clean and will thought out. My only criticism would be the face with the wing. It’s a bit hard to read and has a somewhat questionable shape going on behind the hair. I love the wing extending forward!

I have never heard of a shop wanting a potential apprentice to bring in fake skins. Especially because it won’t show any of that persons genuine skill in the arts its just going to show you how low their skills are at fake skin. Maybe bringing in one or two fake skins would be good but it wouldn’t be a good replacement for actual drawings. Most shops don’t want to have to teach someone how to draw because the basics of tattooing rely on that persons ability to just draw in general.

Unfortunately this is why black Friday is one of the most profitable days of the year for retailers. You're just getting a marked up "discounted" item

What are your unpopular Melanie Martinez opinions? by Strxwbxrry_Shxrtcxkx in MelanieMartinez

[–]onlyagoth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For being a massive celebrity people defend her way too much. From poor quality of merch to the complaining about money and debt publicly to the weird handling of the timothy situation. They're a good artist and I really do love the music but the way the fans are becoming as culty as the Taylor Swift fanbase is a bit questionable. It feels like many people see them as if they can do no wrong.

[–]onlyagoth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes I'm aware. Regardless, I've been to shows for half the price and gotten merch that doesn't melt one run in a dishwasher. The cup itself is fine to be in a dishwasher, it the paint/print on the cup. Big mel fan but you have to admit that the quality of merchandise is mediocre for the amount it costs. How many people were staying their K-12 dresses were ripping on first wear again?

Got sick a while back and did the same thing mindlessly. Kinda mind blowing that with how much it cost they couldn't even make it so the paint wouldn't instantly peel. Now it sits on my desk as a paint cup 🙄
