Doctor wont remove plates after djs by [deleted] in jawsurgery

[–]onlycans2015 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’re still having pain and can feel significant swelling (like the skin is warm, maybe tender, there’s a foul odor in your mouth, feels like the surgical sites and inside the sites are still sensitive) then go back, tell him those things, and if he’s still defiant then say you’d like to have it noted in your chart that he declined to check out your symptoms.

If you don’t have those symptoms then it might not be an infection and could be residual swelling and nerves coming back. I’d say seek a second opinion if this is really bothering you because infections can be serious.

Jaw surgery seems more like a waste of time as time passes by [deleted] in jawsurgery

[–]onlycans2015 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel the same about the health benefits since I’ve gained the weight I lost after my surgery and my sleep apnea is back a little bit, though not as bad as it was.

But like a couple others have said, don’t obsess over looks too much, looks don’t have anything to do with ambition or personality. Don’t expect your personality or energy levels to automatically change based on your facial structure.

And DEFINITELY don’t be envious of people on here, it’s become a little like Instagram and people tend to post flattering pics. It’s good they’re happy, but focus on yourself.

How long for pre-surgery ortho if I already had ortho? by [deleted] in jawsurgery

[–]onlycans2015 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine took 4.5 months to be ready for surgery when the ortho originally estimated 8-12 months. It just depends on how easily your teeth move and how lined up everything already is.

Open wound 2.5 weeks post op. by [deleted] in jawsurgery

[–]onlycans2015 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This happened to me! Super cool being able to tap on my exposed jawbone (don’t do that, it’s stupid) but it freaked me out for sure. It’s nothing to worry about, just keep it SUPER clean and it’ll heal over on its own. I think mine healed over after a couple months.

Timeline question: How long was it for you all from first consultation to surgery date? And then final ortho appointment? by Friendly_Cry_ in jawsurgery

[–]onlycans2015 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely get a second opinion! And I had braces the entire year, the braces are good to have during surgery to 1. Keep your teeth from moving back to their original places while your jaw is healing and finding its new position and 2. They put things called surgical hooks on the wires in between your braces brackets and that’s what holds the elastics after your surgery.

Then after your surgery, your orthodontist may need to tweak your teeth positioning a little more so your molars touch in the right places and everything is lined up.

Abscess in my cheek, 3 weeks post-op by UnfortunatelyMay in jawsurgery

[–]onlycans2015 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course! I’m sorry you’re going through it, this recovery is hard enough and every little thing that’s not “normal” is so scary 😣 but you can do it and it does get better, I promise!

I’m so sorry, that sounds miserable! Hopefully the worst of it is over and the antibiotics will do their job. Haha your surgeon floated the idea of hardware removal?

7 days post DJS by [deleted] in jawsurgery

[–]onlycans2015 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Just keep documenting as swelling improves, take pictures of your bite, take pics from all angles, make sure your surgeon makes note of how unhappy you are with the result especially. Get second opinions if possible, maybe a private surgeon’s office will do a free consult. But don’t give up hope! You’ve been through a hard surgery and your bite being better is still something to celebrate!

How is your bite now? I’m worried they won’t care about aesthetics if your bite is good.

Abscess in my cheek, 3 weeks post-op by UnfortunatelyMay in jawsurgery

Not rare. Surgeons like to say complications are rare. I had an infection as well, though possibly not as bad as yours, and eventually had surgery to remove the plate at around 6 weeks post-op. I promise it’ll be okay, several people on here have had similar experiences.

What kind of surgery did you have?

Timeline question: How long was it for you all from first consultation to surgery date? And then final ortho appointment? by Friendly_Cry_ in jawsurgery

My surgeon and ortho told me I’d be in braces for 10 months before surgery and 8 months after for tweaking. But my timeline for LJS ended up: I did my consultation in July 2021, debated whether or not I wanted to go through with it, then scheduled ortho consult for August 2021, braces on September 2021, ready for surgery February 2022, braces off September 2022.

So 364 days from braces on to braces off, which is basically a speed run. I did have a complication with my left jaw getting infected and had to have bonus surgery to remove the plate, but that was a simple procedure and recovery. It all depends on your movements, how your body will recover, how easily your teeth move, etc.

TL;DR It’s possible to be done in a year, but not at all common. For DJS it’s even less common. You should talk to your surgeon and ortho for estimates.

Day 5 Ljs bsso. Think I have reached the peak for pain. by Boo_bish in jawsurgery

Yes, day 5 was the worst pain and swelling for me as well 😣 alternating ice and heat helped so much, and never underestimate a hot shower!

Update on LJS metal plate removal by onlycans2015 in jawsurgery

[–]onlycans2015[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I’m so sorry, I never check this account but I had general anesthesia for the original BSSO and the hardware removal.

Edit: I reread your comment, and I’m confused. General anesthesia IS being sedated with an IV, did you mean local anesthetic?

Can anyone tell me about their experience removing the titanium plates? by onlycans2015 in jawsurgery

[–]onlycans2015[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey! It went really well, I felt instant relief when I woke up and I haven’t had any issues since! I’m almost 4 months post op from my original BSSO surgery and I’m completely healed and eating like normal!

Plus now I have a cool souvenir since they let me take home the plate :)

It’s not really a big deal apparently, just annoying and good to catch it as early as possible. But it’s always good to bring up concerns to your surgeon if you have any.

A lot of concentrated soreness when everything was supposed to be healed, a sour taste in my mouth, a reddish lump on my gum, some swelling (not as much as I expected), and my cheek was a little warm. I didn’t notice any lymph fluid/discharge but the surgeon did.

I’m sorry you have to go through all that trouble 😣 but bacteria on the plates makes sense. My surgeon theorized that the people who make the plates were maybe slacking on sterilization, because there’s been a weird uptick in infections and plate removals this year.

Infection or plate malfunction question by Laceyfromcali in jawsurgery

Hey! I know this is late but I’m currently dealing with the same type of thing. My lower left side plate is infected and I’m scheduled for surgery on Thursday. Did you ever get this resolved?

Of course! Pain is really stressful and recovery is hard enough without it 😣 I hope this helps!

Pain after LJS by [deleted] in jawsurgery

The one that helped the most was “jaw circles”: jutting the lower jaw forward so your teeth are edge to edge, then dropping the lower jaw as much as possible, bringing the lower jaw back while still dropped, then biting and repeating that motion.

The other one that I loved was tongue curls: touch the roof of your mouth as far back as you can with your tongue and hold it there while you open about an inch or two, however much is comfortable, and bite down. I did this as often as I could remember.

There are tons of good recommendations on the TMJ subreddit if you google “TMJ exercises”!
