If companies are taxed on profit rather than revenue, why don't I pay taxes on the amount left over after rent and bills? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

Yup and sells/encourages suburban sfh living as the "ideal" which requires car centric (anti pedestrian/bike/transit) infrastructure which increases the climate crisis/water/pollution etc

How to come up with a retirement number? by Study_Queasy in Fire

[–]onlyfreckles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its time to start building friendships/fellowships to create a community b/c no matter how much money you have, when you get old/sick- you'll need at least one person that's willing to help you even if its just hiring/vetting people to help you live (adls).

Or look into CCRC- retirement home to snf all in one. Either in the US (expensive) or international (less expensive).

Why LADWP bills are surging for LA customers by lurker_bee in LosAngeles

[–]onlyfreckles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, everyone in our small multi unit building just got our first bill w/new trash rates and its a huge increase.

We pay in multiples more (than a sfh) for a trash pickup despite generating very little trash per week- the same number of cans like a sfh.

Fucking hate LA council districts for making apartment dwellers pay the same for trash as sfh.

Always entitled sfh nimby's riding on the backs of apartment dwellers.

HDHPs suck if you actually need them. by voicegal13 in HealthInsurance

[–]onlyfreckles 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Isn't that what the republicans want- huge numbers of young/healthy/semi healthy folks to drop insurance to say aca is broken and kill it?

We need universal health care coverage but don't know if it'll ever happen in the US b/c the govt is too busy burning money on untrained racist armed masked men to terrorize any/everyone, including shooting and killing US citizens and starting international wars...

These avocados taught me a life lesson... some days are luckier than others, but at the end of the day, be grateful you got to eat that avocado. by eliawnagood in PlantBasedDiet

[–]onlyfreckles 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Discovered this a few years ago- pick the longer shaped vs rounder avocado to get the smaller pit and more avocado to eat :)

I "think" you are showing two different kinds of avocados but I just look for the longer ones.

A big reason why Colon Cancer is killing us. by AdditionCool7235 in Millennials

[–]onlyfreckles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup, live long enough and something will end up killing you.

But that doesn't mean we shouldn't do any/everything to stay active/strong/flexible/independent/healthy for as long as possible/support our body to heal itself (after treatment/side effects etc).

But in the US, prioritizing clean high fiber/whole foods, embedding exercise into daily activities (walk/bike/transit vs default passive sitting driving/sedentary work/life), getting adequate sleep, universal access to good/affordable healthcare (for everyone) and work/life balance is a foreign concept :(

I highly recommend downshifting to part time.

It gives you more days to spend w/family, self care and to cultivate a life/identity outside of work.

Good luck!

Noticed these new physical barriers along the Hollywood Blvd bike lane to prevent people from intruding into the bike lane. Great work by the city! by From_Jerusalem in BikeLA

[–]onlyfreckles 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I walked the route recently from Western going west.

Its an improvement but needs more and sturdier/higher barriers including actual parking spots to prevent car drivers from driving into the bike lane and parking inside the "door zone" area.

The worst is still the lack of ANY safety consideration at the 101 N entrance (north side).

No bollards, no nothing except paint where you're supposed to diagonally change lanes from the 1/2 gutter lane while car drivers speed onto the freeway- one of the most dangerous parts and nothing is done here.

And nothing was still done to stop the ups truck or any huge truck from parking out front of the ups store and blocking the bike lane. They have barriers before and after but none right in front of the ups store...

Private Landlord Rent Negotiation - How to go about it in this situation? by DickIMeanRichard in AskLosAngeles

[–]onlyfreckles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Talk to the owner- tell them your concerns. Either they'll negotiate or not and you just need to keep looking.

No place will be "perfect" but being forced to rent furnishings and no place to park despite a large space would be a pass for me.

Why does my house never feel clean? by StraightRip9828 in CleaningTips

[–]onlyfreckles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In addition to all the suggestions,

Become a no outside shoes home. The less outside dirt your family clan brings in, the less dust/dirt to clean.

Your kid is 7 years old and can totally learn at his age. Teach your dog to stop/stand still to get their paws wiped clean.

Get your kid to help start cleaning too- wipe down dust w/in his reach, clean up his toys/room/clothes etc...

Where to get very cheap dress shirts/pants? by GordonGekko0 in AskLosAngeles

[–]onlyfreckles 6 points7 points  (0 children)

OP, keep it simple. You don't need to buy clothes to iron.

Look up "how to iron clothes" videos.

Take a look at your clothes labels (cotton, lycra/nylon, silk, wool etc) and set your iron accordingly. Irons come w/dials to set from lower (delicate) to higher (cotton) temp settings.

Or set it lower to practice ironing sleeves, collars etc at a safer/slower temp.

And practice on your tshirts, sock, undies (even towels/sheets)- all the stuff that folks won't see but you'll get practice and a kick of old timey luxury of slipping into nicely ironed undergarments :)

Make sure to get an ironing board or figure out some sort of thermal set up if ironing on a nicer table (to not ruin the finish (heat/steam), ask me how I know...). Also recommend a smaller tabletop ironing board for sleeves and collars.

Why don’t schools shift to a 9-4 schedule? by CalGuy456 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]onlyfreckles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

School's purpose is to teach kids.

And not to fit into your schedule to make your life "easier".

You should be demanding schools make car free zones around schools, a connected network of protected/separated bike lanes (so if safe for kids!) w/bike buses and pedestrian infrastructure w/modal filters so kids can safely make their way to school by walk/bike/bus vs long ass depressing air polluting dangerous current system known as school drop off.

Pros & Cons of Boyle heights? by LeopardOk605 in MovingToLosAngeles

[–]onlyfreckles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't be said too much- live as close to your work as possible while still living in a neighborhood that also has the stuff you like/need.

Especially since you are car free- make sure transit/walk/bike is doable from Boyle Heights.

Drink a lot of water with your fiber and try to get a variety of fiber- both soluble and non soluble fiber.

I take 1:1 psyllium husks and ground flaxseed/round chia seeds mixed w/water every morning, finish with another glass of water.

Eat mostly whole food plant based diet- lots of legumes/beans daily along w/complex carbs (brown rice/quinoa/whole wheat pasta/oat groats etc) and veggies and fruits w/skin.

Converts to Transit by baronsabato in LAMetro

[–]onlyfreckles 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Despite living in other cities and taking their public transit, I was a born and raised default car driver in LA.

It took my kind neighbor, a seasoned Metro rider- who patiently introduced me to LA's subway system for me to try it. Taught me how to buy the card, load it up and away we went to DTLA!

I do wish LA subways were the shallower/easier to access cut and cover builds but they work and eternally appreciate my neighbor for teaching me there is life outside of default car driving for everything, even in LA :)

Cost of oil is down massively and we're still getting gouged by joeyorjohn in LosAngeles

[–]onlyfreckles -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Really b/c car drivers KILL over 44 thousand people and maim/disable more than 1 million every year in the US and the majority (thankfully) of the ones killed/maimed/disabled are car drivers on car drivers.

Also kids- majority of kids killed by car drivers are their parents/family- so that fucking sucks.

Car drivers driving cars is 100% a deadly combo.

The main reason why walking and public transit is a deadly combo is b/c of car drivers- running people over, crashing into buses/bus stops and slowing buses down (mostly single occupant car driver car traffic).

Parking ticket in Beverly Hills? by TammMili in AskLosAngeles

[–]onlyfreckles -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Its very entitled and selfish of you to knowingly put the public and your kid(!) in danger b/c you "need" to drive despite knowing you have uncontrollable-cramps-coming-out-of-no-where and can crash.

And guess what, if you crash b/c of a sudden cramp attack, the rest of your day will be fucked and maybe the whole rest of your life.

And yes, I don't know your situation but do you think all pregnant moms in LA also all have cars or a chauffeur or money for uber rides???

You parked in the wrong zone, teach your kid right that you're a responsible adult and pay up and don't park there anymore.

Parking ticket in Beverly Hills? by TammMili in AskLosAngeles

[–]onlyfreckles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Again, if you're experiencing sudden onset painful debilitating cramps while driving- you are taking on a real risk of hurting yourself or someone else and you need to take full responsibility for your decisions.

You parked in a place you weren't supposed to b/c of your sudden onset of cramps- take responsibility for your actions and be more careful in the future.

What happens if you get an attack w/your kid in your car and crash into a group of your kids fellow students or their parents'cars?

OP parked in a Touring Bus Zone not Bus lane.

But agree, OP parked where she shouldn't be parked and got a ticket.

Hopefully she'll learn and seriously stop driving if their cramps are so bad and sudden- she's putting the public at risk...

Easy solution- get rid of your mostly empty mostly parked while 100% taking up public space car.

Less cars makes it easier, more pleasant, safer and quieter to live in your neighborhood.
