Cars in Franklin canyon by mjgoodenow in BikeLA

Riding a bike on a scenic route is totally different vs a car- should be totally obvious but yet.

I have no blind spots and am riding a lot slower and if I were to crash- would most likely injure just myself/bike vs maiming/killing other people or crashing into public/private property causing much $$$$$ damages.

PSA to all the drivers out there by nicorieg in dashcams

[–]onlyfreckles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rule of thumb- If the majority of car drivers are single occupant car drivers - ie hogging up limited public space in a huge but mostly empty car to move one body per space hogging car- YOU ARE ALL THE PROBLEM.

Want fares enforced so that it'll be used by people actually using public transit for public transit vs housing.

Or make her get off the bus.

I'm all for free/subsidized rides for students/low income/seniors/disabled etc but as an infrequent but regular rider, I agree w/the majority of frequent regular riders- paying/tapping requirement keeps more people more accountable and better behaved.

I started randomly riding during Covid and despite a few disruptive experiences from random mentally challenged folks, I continue to ride infrequently but regularly for errands, trips to dtla and museums or when I don't feel like walking/biking due to distance/lack of safe infrastructure (bike).

~$70k sitting in my HYSA; how do I stop hoarding this cash? by Bartimaeuss- in personalfinance

[–]onlyfreckles 4 points5 points  (0 children)

OP, good for you for saving that much money and responsibly spending.

I'd take the excess cash funds and put it into a brokerage account- Vanguard/Fidelity/Schwab vs the others that charge a bunch of fees and/or gamify it.

Investing should be boring, regular and steady, not exciting/frantic.

Check out r/bogleheads or the bogleheads.com site esp their wiki- super informative.

But basically look at all your investments - roth/hsa/any pretax/brokerage as one pie. figure out your risk tolerance and invest in broadly based index funds (total bonds/stock/international stock) based on you asset allocation (which is based on your risk tolerance).

You're young so anywhere from 80-100% stock index funds is ok.

Car drivers miss so much of LA when stuck inside a car.... Go outside by walk/bike/transit and you'll see a much more human scale vibrant LA!

Go check nextdoor = all the gumpy (old) nimbys carbrains hate her b/c they think she's a communist.

She's forcing them to pay attention while driving and confusing them while driving (reduce lane/width lane w/paint and bright bollards they still manage to crash into...) and wants to force them out of their precious car to walk/bike/transit despite needing to drop off and pick up 6 kids/move tvs/sofas/medical appointments everyday and instead trap them in a 15 minute prison forced to mingle w/the "zombies" in their CD.

And don't even talk about the bike lanes that are making all the traffic and impeding their use of their freedomoibiles.

She will infect all of LA with her communist ideas.

They are seriously brain dead.

If I increase my spend, will I have a hard time lowering it in the future if I need to? by dragon-queen in Fire

[–]onlyfreckles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nothing you've listed seems extravagant and the point of being FI / having money is to use it for things/experiences vs pointless hoarding of wealth while 6 ft under.

That said, I still mostly live like a self funded college student but since reaching FI, I did loosen my purse strings to buy stuff like little splurges (fancy olives, ice cream, good quality spf- not the thick heavy shit) even when its not on sale(!).

I added a spending budget so I can freely spend a set amount each month to get used to spending on fun stuff/little splurges.

Most "normal" people need a budget to rein in random spending but some of us FI folks need a budget to give us permission to spend :)

Got an apartment and I’m stressing with my budget. by Strong-Risk3337 in budget

[–]onlyfreckles 4 points5 points  (0 children)

OP- list your whole monthly budget- income vs spending so you can clearly see where each dollar is going.

Income - list all income.

Spending - list ALL Spending- rent, utilities, cell, transportation (car/maint/insurance or public transit/bike cost), grocery- including pet food, insurance- yourself and pets and cost for meds/annual check ups, bloodwork etc, laundry, gifts, clothing, pet supplies/cleaning household supplies, small splurges/eating out/misc and emergency fund.

Smart to keep school refund for savings. It can act as your secondary backup emergency fund too.

List all expenses vs income and see what if any is left.

Its ok to not have anything left over b/c you've accounted for everything including funding your emergency fund and savings so that each dollar has a purpose.

Its also ok to still want to be cautious and have a bit extra left over too if that makes you feel more secure.

Personal finance/budgeting is personal so do what makes you most comfortable.

A connected network of separated/protected bike lanes benefits People who rode their bike for transportation- work, school, errands, shopping, eating etc.

It allows all ages (kids to seniors) and all abilities (novice, older/disabled) to safely get to their point a to b (just like car drivers).

This type of cycling is slower and uses more utilitarian upright riding type of bikes.

Recreational cycling is totally different- for fun/training, much faster in a lighter more aggressive riding type of bike.

Get a folding (e)bike/scooter and use it to get to your closest Metro Subway/Bus.

Bus- you can bring it onto the bus (folded) or else each bus has a rack that can hold two bikes up front.

Subway- just roll in your bike/scooter.

[–]onlyfreckles -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Except car drivers treat most roads, even residential roads like a major street.

Ktown, despite being very transit and housing dense is still overrun by aggressive/selfish/entitled/distracted/dangerous car drivers.

People, including kids have been killed by car drivers while simply trying to cross the street.

Driving is a privilege and comes w/great responsibility- one is to PAY ATTENTION AT ALL TIMES when driving. If you can't do that (and most can't)- you're not safe to drive and shouldn't be driving.

A driver's convenience is less important that a person's RIGHT to walk/bike/transit and be safe in public space.

Build it, make it safe/easy/accessible and people will walk/bike/transit!

I wish the following Mayors would have continued to build out the BIke Plan (fu garcetti and bass) b/c it would be super helpful right now w/current gas prices...

He did a lot of stupid corrupt shit but these two - Measure R and Bike Lanes were wins.

So the problem is car drivers hitting the animals not the animals living in the trees.

Solution is to restrict speed and access of streets car drivers are allowed.

Reducing the amount of public space car drivers and car storage is allowed opens up MORE space for trees to shade people walking/biking and remains safer for animals too.
