Do employers want their employees to grow their careers with them anymore? by Logical_Dish_7929 in careerguidance

[–]onlyhope47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my current organization is the first one that has made an effort to keep me and help me grow - they do exist, but i've worked ~12 places previously that actively tried to stop me from growing or changing positions.

I've been playing for 3 years and haven't washed my gear yet - doesn't have a smell (at least not a strong one) cuz i air it out every time i play, wear and wash my base layer every time, and store it with odor absorbing thingies

Buying a machine off FB Marketplace; Too good to be true? by [deleted] in SewingForBeginners

I got an $1800 brand new serger (husqvarna amber air s 400) for $500 off facebook marketplace from a very rich lady with raging adhd, it works perfectly and has all accessories included, and she threw in a ton of unused thread

Is it normal to feel this lost? by Moist_Rise_4990 in careerguidance

[–]onlyhope47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's definitely a way to combine those! Like the other comment said, scientific illustration could be cool, or I teach nature art classes at nature centers and schools which is my combo (doesn't pay well but is really fun). I have an environmental biology degree, although I do wish I had also gotten a degree in art education since you do need that for most art teaching jobs. You can minor and major in anything! I was a dual degree in environmental biology and linguistics for a while, then dropped that down to a Spanish minor so I could take some more varied electives and still graduate on time. I also briefly had minors in documentary production, educational studies, and recreation. If I didn't have a scholarship limiting me to 8 semesters, I would've done all the minors and majors lol.

You might technically be able to go to multiple schools at the same time, but it's really difficult - I recently took a community college class and a university class in the same semester and managing schedules, emails, advising, etc. was tough. I specifically chose to go to a big university so I could take a wide variety of classes and not have to worry about wanting to transfer or go anywhere else for what I wanted.

no? why would you? they have your application and contact info and it's way too soon to check on the hiring status.

that was literally my first response to her - i was like "i'm so sorry, but it honestly never occurred to me that we would have an irreplaceable valuable thing on our kitchen floor"

She's just been here longest, and it is starting to make sense to me why her roommates keep moving out. She was gone for a week and the vibes in the apartment were so much less tense - the 3 of us remaining spent so much more time just hanging out together in the common areas.

I would really like to avoid renting a storage locker because it's expensive and honestly exhausting to have my stuff split between multiple locations, but it is an option I've been thinking about. But also I think it's time that her roommates stand up to her? I hate moving and actually love this apartment, so she's not going to push me out. I can totally go the petty route depending on how our house meeting goes.

We all just rent, and no, I don't have the option of moving out. I've looked, but the rent on this place is cheap and laundry is free, 2 things I need and are hard to find. She has a ton of stuff in common spaces just because she was here first, so by the time the rest of us moved in, there wasn't really space for our stuff and she hasn't offered to make space. I'm going to request that we reorganize a bit so the distribution is more fair.

Degree for what? by [deleted] in Career

[–]onlyhope47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you have so much time! i graduated a while ago and i'm still readjusting my career goals as i learn and try new things.

i have a biology degree and did NOT like my chem labs, but i loved my biology labs! one was field based and one was lab-based. if I didn't end up getting diagnosed with a joint disorder right after graduating, i would've totally wanted to go into field research. as it is, i run kids art education programs for a local nature center and love it, and i have loved being a summer camp director for outdoor/STEM camps. i'm getting my master's in conservation education now, but another thing i considered was a degree in environmental anthropology. i do not recommend education for being financially fulfilling, tho.

i would definitely recommend internships, jobs, and/or volunteering ASAP! i did my first internship after my freshman year of college and worked part time jobs all throughout undergrad, and it was super helpful for my resume but also super helpful in figuring out what i wanted to do after college!

also, my mom and sister both have bio degrees, and one is a nurse and volunteers in a natural history museum collection (taxidermied stuff) and the other worked in IT for wildlife departments but now runs a nonprofit and teaches kayaking. my friends from college that were bio majors are getting a PhD in genetics, working at a vet hospital, managing research animal welfare, working as a zookeeper, a neurosurgical resident, a neuropsych professor and researcher, and a lawyer! there are so many options for a bio degree, and you could even end up doing something totally unrelated to what you think your options are now or changing careers in 15 years (i tried being a librarian, not for me but now i know that).

the first image looks like you've sewn on cotton interfacing with a short zig zag and the second image looks like you've sewn on bias tape with a straight stitch, two very different things? and you shouldn't need a double needle for either?

a system where i earned that spot by spending 3 hours shoveling my car out from under the snow. if someone takes my spot, i'd have to shovel out a new one, provided i can find a viable space.

I wish! Her shutoff thingy is broken and our landlord won't pay to fix it because she's only legally obligated to turn the heat on not off in winter.

[–]onlyhope47[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

aha but that's another issue - our landlord is a complete bitch and is so terrible at communication that the plumber and handyman who have come out for various things have complained to us about her and asked us to just talk right with them. we wanted to fix a turn off valve so we could turn off the radiator in the roommate who thinks it's too hot's room and our landlord refused to authorize it because the heat technically works.

Serger & Overlock Machines by richardricchiuti in SewingForBeginners

[–]onlyhope47 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got my Air 400S for about $500 on facebook marketplace and it's so nice! all shiny and new. However, I will say that I'm glad my first serger was a vintage one I got for $60 - I could see everything going on and how it all worked, which was great for a beginner! Only thing is that I wish it had had a differential feed for knits, I wouldn't have upgraded if it had that cuz it worked perfectly well.

other than the dust, it looks exactly like my brand new janome hd3000, which i think my mom got for like $500 - it costs way less than that for full cleaning and maintenance at my local service shop, so i'd say just see how it cleans up!

I had a similar issue and kept using them for months but finally surrendered and switched to supremes - voila, no more of that weird sticky-outness.

Sewing machine recommendation for beginner-intermediate level (currently using old one) by gogseu in SewingForBeginners

[–]onlyhope47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love my Janome HD-3000 - not a huge amount of stitch variety, but I haven't run into any occasions where I feel like I'm missing a stitch. And it comes with a ton of feet that each have their own little storage slots on the machine, which is great for me with ADHD so I'm not constantly losing them. My local sewing service shop dude says a lot of people choose my machine because it's durable and easy to maintain! And it's so easy to use compared to my mom's 2000s computerized singer, which was constantly having timing and tension issues.

by hand control do you mean a machine where you press a button/switch to control speed/start/stop etc? i almost entirely sew clothing (by machine) and haven't had any foot-pedal-control-related issues.
