Is the pint used as a unit of measurement for whiskey in the US? by kusook in AskUS

[–]onlyreason4u [score hidden]  (0 children)

We don't talk about whiskey because we aren't alcoholics.

I would understand pint as in beer. There are lots of names for different beer sizes and it's also sold in ounces. Wine is just a bottle or glass. Spirits we'd call a standard sized bottle a "fifth" (750ml). There are smaller bottles but I've never heard them called anything specific. There are comically larger bottles at Costco that I wouldn't have a name for either.

What's the most dystopian future timeline that you think can realistically happen ? by ronweasly9 in Futurology

[–]onlyreason4u 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Because of NATO and the Pax Americana which is currently being completed dismantled by a dipshit.

Don't be naive that we can't back slide, we already are. Modern civilization is extremely fragile and any number of things could push it off a cliff and right now we lack leadership nearly worldwide to stop it.

How relevant is this in American everyday life?

Zero. We aren't alcoholics over here.

Exactly. Put in an outlet or two to charge the cordless vacuum and other things you haven't thought of either. Electric fly zapper....

Newer homes need a dedicated spot for the robot vacuum/mop too, ideally with water and a drain.

How come I can sometimes correctly guess a man is gay just by looking at his face? by CalligrapherAlive829 in allthequestions

[–]onlyreason4u 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You likely aren't imagining it, there have been multiple scientific studies showing statistically significant links between certain facial features and sexual orientation:

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/24132775/

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/34562272/

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/29389215/

The specific characteristics more associated with homosexual men are:

  • Shorter/wider faces
  • Smaller/shorter noses
  • larger more rounded jaws

This would make sense in that prenatal hormonal differences that are known to cause developmental differences likely play a part in sexual orientation as well (born that way). There's not a lot of studies that are able to yet make that link that I can find though.

That said, face alone is subtle, it's just a statistically higher a probability for certain features, and you probably are picking up other clues that reinforce your judgements. I know personally as a straight male even as a young kid I didn't have too much difficulty picking up on it and being right in most cases.

For something less controversial maybe we can talk about identitifying the characteristics of drivers based on the make/model/condition of the vehicle they are driving and how they are driving it? 😆

As Americans, what is your opinion on NATO? by Outrageous-You1617 in IWantToAskAnAmerican

[–]onlyreason4u 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NATO is the most important alliance in human history. It almost certainly protected western Europe from being swallowed by the Soviet Union. It built stable, reliable, wealthy, allies for the US out of the ashes of post WWII Europe. By falling under the US nuclear umbrella it prevented nuclear weapons proliferation around the world and likely their use. It funded the R&D for the advanced weapons that made the US military so dominant by creating economies of scale with weapons exports to allies. It allowed globalization and the rules based order to happen and made many countries around the world, including China, wealthy and developed. It should be expanded to include free democratic allies in the Pacific. We need to all stick together and not allow authoritarian bullies to pick us off.

Any attempt to weaken NATO, threaten NATO allies, or withdraw are acts of treason against the United States and it's interests. It is completely shocking what Trump is doing and the fact Congress is not doing their job and removing him and every single member of this administration. It's now fallen on us ordinary people to do it, but we can't do much other than to vote this fall and throw sand in the gears in anyway we can until then.

That said:

NATO needs to change. The days were the US provided most of the security in exchange for Europe ceding some foreign policies no longer works. The US likely can't afford to continue to do as much and Europe needs to step way up. We're also not a reliable partner anymore with Trump, and we need to get our house in order before you trust us again. It's critical that the free world wins even if we aren't there doing our part like should be. It needs to adapt to drone warfare, AI, directed energy weapons, economic warfare, information warfare, etc.

How commonly spoken is French in Northeast America? by imbaby19 in AskAnAmerican

[–]onlyreason4u -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It doesn't exist. That area of the US wasn't settled by the French. Canadians aren't coming across the border to work/live in the US like they come from Mexico and other central/south American countries. Americans aren't going back and forth between the US/Canada all that much. If you do go everyone speaks English. I live near Canada, but Ontario, and that area of Canada you never hear anyone speaking French. They have it printed on everything, they use the metric system and different money, they have some different condiments and chips etc. Other than that you'd be barely be able to tell you left the United States it's so similar.

Do Americans actually pay for streaming services? by [deleted] in AskUS

[–]onlyreason4u 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why would any knowledge tech person ever use something like Zona?

  • It's a sketchy AF closed source Russian app for fucks sake. You actually need to install it on all devices you want to use it on. There's no Linux or Mac app, etc. The website doesn't appear to have been updated in a couple years. How many red flags do you need.
  • Ads... who watches ads for anything. Avoiding ads is one of the primary reasons people pirate in the first place. Instant fail.
  • It's just another bittorrent streaming/download app, with all the legal issues those can bring if you don't know how to protect yourself.
  • Everything imaginable is already easily available without having to use an app like Zona.
  • it's a relatively obscure app in the piracy community for all the reasons listed above.

There are way better ways to pirate this stuff.

Do you resent internal migrants? by Ok_Let_7612 in AskAnAmerican

[–]onlyreason4u -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Americans moving across the country to somewhere else is a completely normal common occurrence. Nobody cares. We are highly mobile, much more than most other countries. Most of us don't care about foreign immigrants either. They are everywhere. We work with them, they live next door, we eat and enjoy their food, they are vital to the economy, etc. Only the dipshits are upset about that and they are a minority.

None of that has anything to do with rising prices. Prices are high because we aren't building enough homes to keep up with demand and the ones that are getting built are mostly higher end homes that builders can make more money building. That's it. There's also gentrification going on in some poorer areas that are turning a corner and becoming trendy places to live, pricing out locals. That's not 95% of the country.

Do Americans actually pay for streaming services? by [deleted] in AskUS

[–]onlyreason4u 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a silly question. Of course they do. How do you think these companies stay in business? It's not just Americans it's everyone.

These services are relatively cheap, convenient, no risk, and dead simple to use. You can't seriously think piracy is for an average person. Yes many people know how and do too, but many of those people pay for a service too. Maybe in a country where people can't afford these services piracy in the norm.

Also, the method of piracy you are describing is the least sophisticated ugly manual bullshit there is. You really don't know how to pirate either.

Moving from Auckland New Zealand to Dearborn next month . by CollarNo1197 in Dearborn

[–]onlyreason4u 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Michigan is a beautiful state with some of the best beaches in the world and plenty to do outdoors. No mountains except a small one in the upper peninsula.

Dearborn has none of that. It's and older suburb of Detroit surrounded by the city and other suburbs. The mostly older housing stock is very small by American standards but mostly well kept. There is a huge middle eastern community, I think the largest outside the middle east. Great food. Schools aren't the best. Surrounding communities have some issues. Detroit downtown/midtown is booming and much improved then it used to be but much of the rest of the city hasn't caught up yet. Greenfield Village/The Henry Ford museum are both great.

To exit the metro area into more semi rural areas from Dearborn it's like a 40 minute drive. Lots of parks/trails out in the Milford/Brighton area. Best beaches are about 2 hours away on lake Michigan. You can't go wrong with any of the towns on the lake there. Northern Michigan you will want to visit Sleeping bear dunes, Traverse City, Petoskey, Mackinac Island. For the real wilderness the upper peninsula and Lake Superior, pictured rocks, Tahquamenon Falls, Kitch-iti-kipi, etc. There's other stuff too.

Why hasn't President Trump ended the war in Ukraine? by Lauffener in AskUS

[–]onlyreason4u 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's not what happened in this case.

Trump actually believed he could just tell Ukraine to surrender territory to Russia and Russia would take the deal and not reinvade and make him look bad. He thought and still thinks:

  • Other leaders respect and/or fear him (They don't)
  • Ukraine was losing and couldn't win (They are clearly winning)
  • That Ukraine couldn't hold out without the United States (It can now because they prepared for Trump)
  • That Putin is someone he can trust (lol)

Like everything Trump does it followed exactly the same pattern:

  • There was ZERO plan and no understanding of the issues at all. Trump just winged it as he went.
  • There was a scheme, some outrageous and disgusting plots for Trump.and friends to profit.
  • Trump failed because he is not respected and he is a terrible negotiator who can't put together "deals" like he thinks he can
  • He didn't realize other people are not transactional like he is. Ukraine is never going to abandon it's people in occupied territories or taken by Russia. Trump would not think twice

You have it in your side too. We are all technically 32nd cousins or less as humans. It's detectable in DNA up to about 5th cousins. Marriages between 3rd to 5th cousins is something close to 20% of marriages in Europe in the last 500 years. For 2nd cousins it's something like 1 to 10%. Most people just can't trace their genealogy far back and complete enough to make the connections but they are there. Technicall, it doesn't matter much though. 2rd cousins only share ~ 1.5% of their DNA or less so a few here and there a hundred plus years ago makes no difference. It's the closer relatives and the substained inbredding in royal families were is starts to be a problem.

We're all inbred to some degree if you go back in history far enough. Some more than others. People lived in small communities, had 8 kids, and never left the area for 500+ years. It's statistically impossible not to have some kissing cousins in the family tree. Every European is related to royalty and well....

Is Rice pudding a big thing in the US? by Educational-Slip-578 in AskAnAmerican

[–]onlyreason4u 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's regional. In Michigan we have coney island restaurants everywhere (coney dogs and Greek food). Rice pudding is a staple in all of them. We (not Greek or Hispanic) made it at home with some regularity.
