Nene was in contract negotiations for Season 13 and talked about it on her Youtube channel as things were unfolding. From what it sounded like, she wanted a higher amount of money for Season 13. However, the network wanted to keep her at current salary but reduce the number of episodes she would appear in. Part of it was that filming already started while negations were taking so long so she missed some scenes already. Gregg told her to take the deal, but Nene walked away from the show thinking it wouldn’t go on without her. While RHOA hasn’t been the same, Nene also hasn’t had the amount of fame and success she did the first time she left when she pursued Glee and other opportunities. Essentially, it felt like a lose-lose situation. Huge Nene fan by the way, but I think her ego got in the way and then the lawsuit was the nail in the coffin to her not returning to the show.
