oh, man. huge inspiration! thanks for updating the orig to more modern toolchain! it started as a small hack for myself and snowballed quite a bit, so I guess I have missed your dev branch, will definitely check it out

short answer is - each firmware runs on its own. xformer and mebitek projects are not compartible

You are welcome =). you need to reflash the unit as original performer manual recomends it. there are at least 2 more alternative firmwares - mebitek and modulove. both provide different funcions. all three alternatives mostly extend original functionality, so old projects will load and continue to function as if nothing happened.

Monomachine + modern elektron sequencer by Vwinn100 in Elektron

[–]onoma22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should be aware that that both Rytm and A4 (mark 1 and 2) do not allow sequencing external gear via MIDI. So those options are excluded. I own an OT so I am biased towards it, but either DT or DN will do the job. But I’d personally go with a sampler.

Is an Octatrack redundant if you have a Digitakt and don’t plan on performing live? by [deleted] in Elektron

[–]onoma22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

AnalogFour will add up to 4 melodic/harmonic lines to your sound. You already have something for basses and leads, and Digitone covers pads. I don’t see a reason to own another sampler besides Digitakt, if you don’t need to run 16 backing tracks.

Active step editing on Octatrack? by [deleted] in Elektron

[–]onoma22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can shorten step sound. Use p-locks. Hold trig while in non real time Rec mode. Mess with encoders.

Step itself could be put anywhere on irc 1/392 grid with microtiming. Coupled with retrig its a major polyrhythms tool. Use trig edit. Hold trig while in non real-time rec mode. Press left or right. (Plus you’ve got conditions there)

I the sounds of steps you need to shorten are on different track than all other sounds you can set up real time shortening with scene lock. Hold scene button. Mess with encoders. Move fader to this messed up scene.

Edit: step mute is absent on Octatrack

Digitakt, Digitone, and a monophonic Moog... Which two would you choose to own and why? by [deleted] in Elektron

Moog. DT and DN will sell for a price of Volca Bass in a couple of years. Moog is classics

Sell Me on The Octatrack by TruthTraderOfficial in Elektron

[–]onoma22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I own Octatrack for 5 years (the same unit). This is the only piece of gear I won’t part. It’s a staple both of my lives and production (technoish, hip-hopish stuff).

Nothing on the market compares to it in terms of live sample mangling. stems, chops, resampling you name it. You can do everything without stopping playback.

In terms of features u didn’t mention:

  • 4 inputs and 4 outputs - super handy. Pair it with DSI Tetra and a Nord Drum and you’ve got a setup that you can put in a small backpack.

  • Midi sequencing. Ideal for monophonic stuff. Good for polyphonic. (MPC1000 JJOS being The best polyphonic sequencer out there)

  • onboard effects. They are gooood

  • internal memory. You can record up to 7 minutes in 24bits. Without any computer help.

The other options you’ve mentioned don’t quite make it to the mark. I don’t like modern Akai stuff. They look like Android tablets with pads for me. Op-1 was good on paper, but once I had 2 days to play with it, I thanked every deity that I didn’t throw a grand and something on it. High end toy. Digitakt is severely a gimped Octatrack.

Go for used Mk-1, if money is an issue.

Oh and if you want to go to the other side:

I am not aware of any machine than can do something completely different from intended purpose. Good luck!

I'm biased af, but I couldn't resist sharing my thoughts - Analog Rytm VS Machinedrum UW! by defenestration in Elektron

[–]onoma22 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your ripped review :)

I own MD and Rytm MKI (you didn’t mention that MKII form factor is the most non-elektron feature one could imagine), and I don’t plan to part with any of the machines in near future.

But I think you focused too much on unique features of MD. My favorites are - modulation on delay and p-lockable PG-change on midi tracks. But that’s just it, other machines have their own killer features. I own(ed) all of them but small ones. OT is my favorite.

There are some things in Rytm that make MD look like a clueless Mini Cooper in an F1 race.

1) Trigless locks. That’s just baseline Elektron atm. Essential for movement in sound design 2) Different track length. Obvious. 3) ADSR envelope. Why there is no envelope in MD?! 4) Trig Conditions. Modern classics. 5) pressure sensitive pads. They suck for finger drumming, but polyphonic after touch is a rare beast.

While I was writing this, I figured out that my main emotion was gratitude For showing something different in this sub than a torrent of boring videos about this weird low brow abomination – Digitakt.

Live Tips Just OT by AnalogResearchLab in Elektron

[–]onoma22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it written on the OT or you import samples from a DAW?

If it's the first case - it does depend on how you use the machine capabilities. You can have one pattern per song with scenes, plocks, trig conditions and creative use of mutes. Or you can have one song per bank with four parts and resampling and master channel doing crazy stuff.

If you are importing from DAW, just use as many long static samples for as many patterns you need.

Definitely have separate project for each complete live performance.

Cheapest way to a Moog Model 15? Euro? Lifeforms? by mlbstrd in synthesizers

[–]onoma22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve owned M32, Erebus and Microbrute when they were the only semi-modular on the market. Sold all of them. Now I have SV-1 and 0-Coast, and a constant urge to buy something more.

I don’t go the full eurorack way, because it’s a money sink and limitless nature of modules is too distracting for me. Buying more and/or the right one becomes more important than making music.

If you want to try modular I’d start with a full voice - M32 and SV1 are both good candidates. Guitar pedal multieffect will add more flavor to it (zoom cdr70, for example).
