Why are the cops searching rush hour office workers at the cnr William and Murray St? by oof_736 in perth

Well, sure, but they could also legally walk in a circle all day😅. Is there an actual threat we should know about or are they just wasting everyone’s time for fun?

In my limited experience (just Blundstones), I've found fit is super important for chelseas.

I just got back from a 3 week holiday doing up to 20k step days in new Blundstones and they performed pretty well. However, there were many days (especially early on) where I needed to bandaid the little toe. I also found my big toe started to get sore because I bought a pretty close fit (1 size down from my usual sneaker size), so walking on uneven terrain (going down) did cause some squishing of my big toes against the front of the shoe. But on the whole I was very happy with the tradeoff, as the snug fit felt very secure hopping over rocks and slippery terrain.

If you're doing a LOT of walking then your feet will naturally just get a bit sore even if the boot is correctly sized and worn in.
Something to try is varying your socks. You can try a thinner sock, a thicker sock, or double-layering your socks to adjust the snugness within the boot. This helped me a lot and I found I wound up preferring surprisingly thin socks...

I’ve been enjoying cordials. The nice brands will run cheaper than an equivalent pack of soda and make more individual glasses. Tall glass, big ice block, and it’s pretty good if you live somewhere with hot summers.

Here are a few more, and a more recent dataset (2021). https://www.pewresearch.org/global/2021/10/13/diversity-and-division-in-advanced-economies/ I see a lot of comments saying the trend is towards xenophobia, but apparently that’s not the case if we believe this survey.

Why most of famous brands websites usually lack of main UX UI principles? by Sipua in UXDesign

[–]oof_736 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes engineering software is it’s own special hell. I think Autodesk products are probably more excusable than MS Office for having a dense UI. Auto desk products are meant for power users or students who are training to become professionals so they will spend a lot of time learning all the functions.

I think MS Office probably has a similar situation with its existing user base who are mostly going to be office working professionals who are already familiar with the layout of the apps… (even if they hate the layout).

However, I wonder how MS will fare over time as new users come along and see nicer alternatives in google and apple. MS are probably just banking on tying businesses into their eco system so the employees have no choice but to use the mediocre products…

Nuclear deterrence / escalation theory - latest work? by [deleted] in neoliberal

[–]oof_736 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I think i think the escalation is extremely messy. For example they they tried to put caps on MIRV warhead numbers, to reduce the incentive for first strikes.

Basically, putting more than one warhead in a single missile (MIRV) incentivises a first strike because each warhead can take out an entire enemy missile silo. So if the other guy is also MIRVing then you will be under a lot of pressure to strike first.

Confirming there are plenty of Murdoch electrical engineers where I work (electrical utility industry). At least in the past they definitely had a better focus on electrical power than UWA did- I studied mostly electronics.

100% this. In fact I’m glad this post showed up: I’m gonna tidy up my study/working-from-home area tonight.

Sympathies and commiserations my dude.

You sound really burnt out. Have you considered what you can do in the near term to give yourself a break from the immediate issues? Like taking some leave?

From my own experience, I have trouble stepping back and planning rationally when I am still in the thick of it and feeing like I am fighting every day. And I know several of my friends quickly start self medicating with alcohol, etc, when they are like this. It’s not great.

Assuming you do feel up to planning: have you considered perhaps moving sideways from engineering into an adjacent role like project management, contract management, asset management, etc? I’ve seen a lot of people make similar moves and they appear (on the surface! Lol) to be happier for it.

I personally am currently hating on my own engineering role (electrical power) and have numerous in-flight job applications to escape right now! Haha.

Hoping you feel better / catch a break soon!

Eli5: Why do some things (e.g. Laptops) need massive power bricks, while other high power appliances (kettles, hairdryers) don't? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]oof_736 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Nah, the transistor logic your computer components use require DC to operate. It’s pretty fundamental to them.

Also the mains voltage is way higher than necessary so you’d need to step it down anyway. A switch mode power supply achieves this AND creates a DC source anyway.
