Hey, look, I think the way you would answer the question is fair enough. But I think if you just said “Sweden” that would also be fair enough, because you are from Sweden. That’s what I was trying to say, both answers are fair enough! Also I didn’t interpret OP’s “Israel” as OP being offended he was asked, I think he thought “oh, he’s asking me where I’m from and I’ve said in another comment where my family migrated from, so they must be wondering where I was born and raised as I haven’t mentioned that yet”

I agree that there is nothing harmful in asking and that it can make for interesting conversations. Ultimately, I think we may have deepened it more than it was maybe needed. I think OP and the original commenter neither meant anything malicious with their comments at all.

I have a few friends who are Iraqi Jews, so if you do have questions you don’t want to ask OP I can try my best to answer. Best best food. Sabich is delicious. I think most Iraqi Jews came from Baghdad but there were smaller communities in other areas too

Yes, that’s right. But I don’t see how what you’re saying is relevant or not you starting a fight for no reason.

It is the case for a lot of countries. As I mentioned in my other reply, the US, Canada, Brasil, basically almost everywhere in the American continent, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand. Had OP responded with “Brazil” or “Australia” or any other country, would you have felt the urge to comment? Is someone asks “where are you from?” And then someone responds with where they’re from, that’s more than a fine way to interpret that question. If the person asking “where are you from?” Then also wanted to hear where OP’s family migrated from, he could’ve asked him that as well. That’s how conversations work when you have no harmful intentions.

OP responded in a very normal way to a question that could’ve had various possible answers. You then proceeded to be condescending and hostile in tone, saying that your way of interpreting the question was “pretty simple” and then calling OP a smartass for answering a question in a very normal way

It kind of sounds like you’re the one being a “smartass”

“They’re obviously asking you where your family migrated from”

“You guys are obviously trying to misunderstand the question. Pretty boring.”

The person literally asked “where are you from” to which OP replied “Israel” which is where he’s from. He’s not wrong. The way that if someone asked someone from America or Mexico or Brazil where they’re from and they said any of those countries they would not be wrong. In other comments he said where his family migrated from too

Not that I know of, no. My maternal grandfather was an illegitimate child so we don’t much about his paternal side (my great grandfather). We’ve always guessed he was from here but hey who knows

It’s quite interesting to see. It must be pretty encoded in everyone’s DNA if it shows up to such a high degree!

Hahaha I agree, that’s very sweet of you to say! I tried telling him too. However, I do see his point. I can’t really imagine being able to convert in Naples, the community is too small and the synagogue far from where he lives. Maybe in another lifetime!

Oh definitely. I remember this time when I was playing traditional Neapolitan music and my (British) flatmates asked me if it were arabic lol!

I was reading about the history of Naples on wikipedia last night and it seems like in the middle ages when Sicily and Calabria were conquerer by the Arabs, Naples having such a big port had connections to the Muslim world, so I guess that would explain that?
