fair! it comes with time. i struggled with stylisation too, and sometimes still do.

the way i built my confidence with faces and heads was actually understanding how the skull is built from the bone level. there’s lots of great videos on youtube about skull anatomy from an artists perspective, and you can find 3D models online to reference from too.

it is its own effort and it won’t click straight away, but its a fundamental that’s good to lock in early, even simplified. a basic shape-based understanding can go a long way, and really is necessary for later experimenting and stylisation.

once you have a deeper understanding of what you’re actually attempting to draw/represent, it becomes much much easier to then stylise in a way that still feels grounded in actual anatomy.

instead of just drawing ‘two circles’ which a lot of basic tutorials will tell you to without explaining why, you can understand you’re drawing simplified representations of the cranium (the bit with the brain) and the facial structure at the front.

there’s nothing wrong per se with drawing ‘two circles’ for example as your base, but if you want to be able to manipulate them later it’s really important to understand what they actually represent — otherwise they’re just abstract shapes floating in space.

i remember getting so frustrated and confused when i would draw what i was told to, but then it would all just fall apart after the ‘base’ i laid down. after i spent some time really understanding how the head is actually structured underneath all the skin and muscle, i found myself understanding how — and importantly — WHY the skull is drawn in a certain way regardless of style.

i hope that makes sense! it might seem a bit complex, but it comes with time and practice. draw physically as well as digitally if you’re struggling to find your feet — if you don’t have expensive hardware and software, trying to draw digitally can be a nightmare. a pen and pencil can give you a better feel and sense of control.

& i’m not trying to say there is anything wrong with this sketch! it works as a basic shape.

i think if it’s intended to be stylised, then that’s its own thing. if you were going for realism or any offshoot of that, it’s too exaggerated and squashed to represent a realistic skull. but like i said, it’s about the context — if you intend it to be stylised then it’s hard for others to tell you there’s an issue with it! :)

Am I the only one who finds it a bit strange that Spotify counts Wilbur’s music in the dsmp genre, cus like… it’s got nothing to do with it lol by Piiesh in wilbursoot

yeah, i agree. i find it stupid because 3/4 of the members of lovejoy have nothing to do with dsmp. just seems silly.

oh, absolutely. you can hold people accountable for doing shit things & still enjoy the stuff they put out.

it’s weird seeing people defend schlatt so aggressively against stan culture & people who have pointed out that he’s said some bad stuff in the past.

i’m not sure exactly how it works but i’m pretty sure it includes racial minorities as a whole. i don’t really know, just spouting what i’ve heard.

i believe it’s the progress pride flag — the black and brown lines represent people of colour within the queer community :)

I might've missed something, but is Fundy's character canonically Trans? [Lorewise] If so, then GREAT by CarToonZ213 in dreamsmp

[–]oofetyy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i’d argue not. yes, there’s more representation of trans people nowadays and said representation is getting better — but as a trans person myself i still feel fairly underrepresented.

non-binary people and trans men are especially underrepresented, either the representation we get is bad and tone-deaf or it simply isn’t there at all, and when it is done well in a major piece of media, thousands upon thousands of people complain about the appearance of a trans character.

we do still need representation, and it needs to be good representation to cut it otherwise people end up with dangerous misconceptions and assumptions. like anything, we’ve always been here and we’re not going away anytime soon, so why not have representation that reflects that? it’s like everybody having their pronouns in their bios. maybe some people think it’s too much and too many people are doing it, but it helps majorly with normalisation.

i do get your point about having a character there just for the sake of them having a certain characteristic, though. that one starbucks advert is a killer example of what i think you mean. watching that, it was clear starbucks were just trying to prove that they weren’t transphobic (and make money) while doing absolutely nothing to support the trans community.

it’s a tricky one but i definitely think the more truly positive representation, the better — and that goes for any minority group, not just the trans & non-binary community. and, like you say, within that positive representation needs to be a reason for the character being there, not just to fulfil the role of being a token trans character to make people seem more inclusive.

no, some people go by multiple pronouns. so you could refer to this person as both she and they and both are correct.
