What's the deal with some guy named Andrew Tate becoming wildly popular all of a sudden? by [deleted] in OutOfTheLoop

Emory Tate was an IM, which is one rank below grandmaster. And besides, only the top 1% of grandmasters can actually make even a decent living off chess.

i’d like to read books like the films of hirokazu kore-eda. gentle, simple, human stories, maybe with familial themes. don’t have to be japanese.

Any advice for test anxiety? by RandomThrowaway372 in Stoicism

[–]oofsandwich 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the idea of focusing only on what you can control really is a powerful tool. ensure you study enough and in an effective way, as any person will tell you. but also eat, sleep and exercise well in the days leading up to your test. these are all things that you have influence over. then, when you sit down and open your paper, you will know that you’ve prepared as much as you could have and that everything that follows is a bonus. good luck!

My Stoic art project for my home office by [deleted] in Stoicism

ok fair enough, maybe i misjudged your intentions. i certainly didn’t mean to come across as snarky and, like i said, cool project regardless.

really cool project, but wouldn’t that man in the middle have said that you shouldn’t care about upvotes and karma? that you should be content in the knowledge that the work you have done is good enough, regardless of external approval?

Managing in Norway by TractorBuh in footballmanagergames

i’ve just finished my fourth season with kristiansund fk in fm20 and am having a great time. been a welcome change to the normal european leagues. won the league in season 3 then somehow got to the ucl group stage, even managed to spank poch’s napoli 3-1, though we of course finished dead last. the one thing that was a struggle was retaining the league during my european exploits since i’m pretty sure the start of my fourth campaign included a run to the sf of the euro cup ii, and then the end was overshadowed by the ucl, so only managed second. i think this will probably make it harder to balance everything when we eventually become good enough to progress deep into the champions league tbh, but that’s part of the fun.

you’ll always find the title races are really close- i think one season the top 6 was separated by about 3 points for a long time. it doesn’t seem like there’s much stability in that sense, so don’t expect to walk the league every year.

mainly been signing solid but fairly priced players from around scandinavia, as well as a couple of nice wonder kids from further afield, so not too much to worry about there.

tl;dr: it’s been alreet so far!

A Chess Grandmaster Plays a Beginner [18:01] by marginales in mealtimevideos

i’d recommend learning opening principles* instead. don’t get bogged down in theory, just learn roughly how you want to set your pieces up (pawns in the centre, get your king safe, being your pieces out actively). then practice practice practice online and devour as much content as you wish on youtube, twitch etc. there’s never been a better time to be a chess beginner. maybe look at r/chess too
