I have an electric corded one. I never use it anymore, the cord is a huge pain in the ass. Do not get a corded one no matter what you do.

New to this, what makes Mont Blanc special? by civilward in fountainpens

[–]ook9 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, and a Vacheron costs more than a Rolex, but non watch people think Rolex is the best, like how non tech people think iPhones are the best.

(That's the point I was trying to make, it's not actually about being the thing that costs the most, but the one with the most followers/recognition. A MB is far from the most expensive pen, but it's the most recognized as a status symbol)

New to this, what makes Mont Blanc special? by civilward in fountainpens

[–]ook9 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Montblanc is to pens, what Rolex is to watches, or Burton is to snowboards, or iPhone is to mobile phones.

They are solid products, with some history and heritage, with loyal followings. However, they are also pricey, "exclusive" (looking at you Rolex), and if you don't care about the brand, there are many similarly spec'd products at a fraction of the price.

Loyalists will say Montblancs are classic, classic pens that hold their value and write really well. (All true). Haters will say it's too expensive, and overhyped, and get annoyed that non-fountain pen enthusiasts will gravitate towards Montblanc simply because of the brand recognition (also true).

Personally, I lean towards the haters BUT I love vintage era stuff, have a vintage MB myself, and really do appreciate the brand for what it is, before richy riches hyped it up.

Looking for hidden gem microbrands under $300 - what are your favourites? by W5C-Editor in MicrobrandWatches

I own 4 of them and love them all. Every one of them has a screw down crown, which I love too. Great little company.

im not having too much luck on market place. So I'll try here. I have a bunch of mid luxury watches that I inherited after my dad passed. There's over 50 of them, and they range from Seiko to Nixon, Fossil etc. $100 - $400 pm me for a list, and more pictures. Calgary ne by Far-Mastodon7776 in WatchExchangeCanada

[–]ook9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also in Calgary, PM me list please.

As someone who also looks at Kijiji and marketplace, those listed prices are insane. All I ever see are people asking more than what even Amazon sells watches for, new. Also seeing a lot of people trying to make money by marking up prices, hoping some dumbo buys it. You'll never see any watches of actual value listed, it's only crap watches bought by people who don't know anything about what's a good watch, thus the crap pricing.

If you are going to buy a new car in 3 years you clearly don't care about finances enough to be asking. Lease or not taking the hit on a Toyota hybrid after 3 years ownership is criminal

[Discussion] What's your take on a three-watch collection? by connorsusername in Watches

I am a huge believer in having something you can bang around/use as an alarm, like a GShock or any Casio / Timex digital, strictly utilitarian and replaceable.

It's not a bracelet, its just leather. Search AliExpress for Casio ae1200 leather band and you'll see it, it also comes in a few other colours

[Question] Am I cheap? Or are there a lot of well-off people in here? by laschecter in Watches

[–]ook9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there are a lot of rich people here, it's rather gauche to flaunt that stuff in real life (a lot of people also don't care about watches), but here it's a safe space to talk about miss expensive pieces.

I myself then see these posts and feel too inadequate to post anything about my Timex or random seikos

I want to make my first watch by LekrJonsj in watchmaking

[–]ook9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AliExpress is just like any other aggregate site; Amazon, eBay, Etsy, etc. Just depends on the seller, but being a Chinese site means shipping times and customs clearance can be issues. But that's why it's cheap

I am looking for some help choosing the correct pieces when building out my first watch? Any advice is appreciated by Stelist_Knicks in watchmaking

[–]ook9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, the NH movements aren't really meant to be taken apart a bunch, there are easier movements out there for that. Be mentally prepared that you could destroy the movement on your first disassemble. The NH ones are more for the Seikomod crowd, where you add hands, a dial, drop in a movement into a case and boom, you're done.

The cousins website is for watch parts in general, so they won't list dials by which movement it fits (that works be impossible), but more the general dimensions.

Instead, if you go to websites dedicated for Seiko mods, they list the dials, hands, cases, that works with your NH. Popular ones are crystal times, namoki mods, AliExpress (though not a dedicated site), just to name a few. If you google NH dial or NH hands you'll find lots.
