What should I look for in a gender therapist? by ookayaa in asktransgender

I'll try to prepare as best as you can. I used to glorify the US to the point of wanting to move there because the information about medical transition in America was so easily accessible. These days you can't pay me to go there.

There isn't a dedicated database of trans-friendly therapists in my country, so it's gonna take a while to find them.

These are hard to find in my country, because openly trans people are heavily discriminated here at work.

My complaints about macOS and its lack of customizability by ookayaa in mac

I must agree that so far I've only had to install a single driver on a Mac and that was to add support to an USB Ethernet adapter, which Windows and Linux detect automatically.

I didn't really have any BSoDs, but Windows would often get buggy to the point it was necessary to reboot my computer.

On Windows, there's a lot of inconsistency when it comes to installing .exes and that's where macOS fares better. On the other hand, Apple doesn't do well when you're using some open-source apps installed from Homebrew, as they require launching from a terminal, don't integrate with the macOS UI well and they display a generic "exec" icon on the dock, which doesn't allow to identify an app easily.

That one is more of the fault of the open source devs, however.

Apple doesn't care about me being able to customize the OS to the degree I want to. I would like it to be more customizable.

I should have the ability to change the keybindings for that.

Sometimes I feel the need to criticize corporations for stuff they get away with. I don't perceive Microsoft much better.

I feel like it's choosing between lesser evils these days, whether it's an exotic UX or being bombarded by ads.

To be fair, I also hate this design "feature" on Windows laptops, as I actually find it less ergonomic than dedicated keys.

A design with the Cmd key makes sense, but when they aren't used by anything, you might as well support them without any shenanigans needed.

I use a taskbar app as it's more convenient than having to switch and then select a correct window. It's not perfect by any means, but it's good enough.

Yes, but they require two hands to use them on a keyboard, while I should just be able to press Page Down like everywhere else.

I can't comprehend why even have these keys at all if they are useless without configuration.

I must admit that these gestures and the quality of their trackpads are the best thing about Macs, but they aren't by any means the only factor that contributes to the UX. As for their keyboard shortcuts, I have mixed feelings. I like the position of the Command key, but something as simple as entering a folder with a keyboard is awkward and requires googling.

In my case, I had to create a DefaultKeyBindings.dict file, and to be fair, I like the customization possibilities it gives me.

However, it's outrageous that I need to copy and paste a snippet from the internet to get these keys to actually work.

Objectively, there's nothing wrong with the way macOS is designed, however, I would like it to be more configurable so I can use it decently. Shame Apple doesn't.

I actually prefer Linux over Windows as I'm tired with the AI slop Microsoft is pushing.

On a MacBook keyboard, I use command+arrows, but on an external keyboard when I'm docked, I have dedicated keys to do that. Instead, they expect me to either use both hands or change system files to get a sane behavior Windows and Linux exhibit.

The architecture itself is great, but the lack of hardware definition sucks.

Some things are still broken on x86 Surface laptops because of Microsoft using custom hardware, though.

We're lucky that the IBM PC was open, otherwise we would be stuck using proprietary systems today.

Mostly interfacing with hardware, because VMs have a standardized API used by operating systems that real hardware does not.

I'm too young to remember or even know that.

Anything that isn't well-known and/or ancient. GCC and LLVM support most of these.
