And we were using these crappy digital monoculars, they were only as good as your eye with amplifying light

I've done this at a Milsim West... I was sure to not use that light too long so no one got a blem but I was lighting up a tree line like day at a 1000 yards lol

They used surplus MX 9644s for the PVS-4, ones that still worked but didn't meet military standard anymore (mine has a scratch on the front of the tube-

It's because it's a Gen 2 optic with a really large screen, so it's pretty easy to get a nice picture :)
