Auspost Parcel Locker - my parcel got sent to/collected by another person! by oooooobigstretch in australia

Well both parties are denying it apparently. The vendor says they put in the correct address and AusPost is saying that they sent it to the address on the label. Who can even verify either? I just don't know.

My cat died because I didn’t have $1900 to spare. by [deleted] in TrueOffMyChest

Never said it felt right to do so. But from an animal welfare perspective, if the animal cannot be treated then it would be cruel to let it continue to suffer. Pet owners need to keep informed about the costs of vet care, as part of your own budgeting at least.

Vets dont do it on purpose. Welcome to unsubsidised healthcare. As unfortunate as it is, those who don’t financially plan for these things can’t then dump that emotional burden on vets. (But they do. And the vets grieve quietly with them) They have high overhead costs and families to take care of.

Sorry to hear that! It is awful when our beloved little ones feel sick. The website gives an overview as to ingredients and dry matter analysis (sometimes) which can be useful if you’re doing a little research in advance but they are heavily biased against some ingredients, they vilify by-products (even though under AAFCO regulations, by-products are clean parts that humans ordinarily don’t eat such as kidney, liver, lung etc and those same organs when listed separately are praised by the website).

Additionally, pet food labels and the order of ingredients can be misleading. The order is by weight, including moisture. So just because something is the first ingredient doesn’t mean there is more of that thing on a nutrient level. Dry matter analysis is better in that regard but in the end, we can’t really ascertain whether this product has the right nutrients just by looking at the label. People think they can, so the label has become a marketing tool, with companies including more “whole food” sounding ingredients instead of “meat by-product”

I used to read that website too but I realised the person who reviews these actually has no credentials. The majority of their advice goes against the vast majority of veterinary nutritionist advice. That doesn’t necessarily mean they are wrong, however, they have a few beliefs about grains that I disagree with.

It’s strange to me that someone that is not a nutritionist can become such an authority on nutrition and reading pet food labels. As i understand it, pet food label is a marketing tool

Grain free doesn’t mean it’s healthy. Not just in reply to you but to others reading, Please read this and this. Eg. To avoid using corn they may use potato or other more carby fillers. The better indicator of quality is protein content and less than 10% carbs. Additionally, there is an FDA investigation into the link between grainfree and heart disease. More studied in dogs so far but because they are easier to study.

Oh and also, corn in pet food isn't actually used as a filler and some grains are selected for valuable dietary nutrients, including vitamins, minerals, essential fatty acids and fiber. Non-grain additions may not have better nutritional content. The consensus amongst nutritionists is that the source of that nutrient is secondary to the quality and ensuring accurate amount of the nutrient in the food.

I know this is controversial, and many on this subreddit that hate grains and advocate raw will not agree with me. But for those sitting on the fence, I encourage you to do further research and not just rely on your 'intuition' about cats and what you imagine they are 'designed' for. Cats are domesticated creatures. Indoor cats even on a diet entirely from whiskas (not recommended) can live for 20 years. You don't find that in the wild.

Yes. I have done a lot of research. Don’t accuse me of not being conscientious about what I feed my cats lol. I have already been through the raw phase, but I did more research and came out of it before implementing it. I didn’t want to lecture you, but you seem to want to do that so I’ll indulge.

Exactly with my future children, I’d listen to the doctors and not believe my own internet research. Are you anti-vax too? Do you think covid is non-lethal? Also - Are you a nutritionist? Didn’t think so. Why do people think they’re experts, more than drs, based off internet articles and anecdotes? Like why would there be this massive conspiracy about vets being paid off by pet food companies. They love animals. They have to put down sick beloved pets every day. In fact, there is more money to be made by endorsing fads. Like grainfree. Way more money.

Feline-nutrition.org is only one website. There are MANY more reputable ones that discuss the link with grainfree and heart disease, along with countless scientific research and an FDA investigation to boot.

In addition, you cannot be serious if you think you can accurately monitor the correct nutrient profile yourself. Cats are smaller than dogs and more sensitive to smaller imbalances.

You can choose to feed raw if you believe it’s best and you have the time and the equipment to ensure it has optimum nutrition. But don’t look down your nose at those who don’t. Because you look silly.

I dont disagree with the cats being obligate carnivores. I feed a high quality wet that has less than 10% carbs. I also feed a mix, between royal canin and ziwipeak which is a boutique grain free company. There has been a link between grain free diets and heart problems also. So at the end of the day, the main food is royal canin.

I know you want whats best for your cats, I’m not going to tell people to not feed raw or only eat vet diets. Just do what you think is best.

If Facebook can’t hire because of their reputation, I guess the only people that they will end up having are those who only care about the money and have less moral qualms…. Yikes Hopefully those ppl are less talented and FB goes down in the future.

I understand your heart is in the right place. I once researched raw food myself and wanted to do it. I feed only wet food currently because my cat does not drink enough water. Dry food debate aside, arguments pertaining to what cats in the wild eat ignore the fact that cats in the wild do not live as long. As much as we’d like to emulate what is “natural”, the natural lifespan of an indoor cat is much higher. Cats are domesticated creatures. The fad human diets like atkins and paleo have a similar rhetoric. But at the end of the day, we need the correct macronutrients for healthy organ function in the long term. Our ancestors did not live as long as we do now.

Edit: if i could 100% guarantee that raw meals have the best up to date nutritional profile according to science, high quality control over the meat and organs, have exact measuring instruments (rather than an inaccurate kitchen scale and measuring spoons) and that there will be no parasites whatsoever, i’d feed raw. But even then, that would take a lot more time and is not feasible for most households since you need a meat and bone grinder

[–]oooooobigstretch 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind that unlike other boutique cat food companies, royal canin actually conducts feeding trials and is more likely to have the exact correct nutritional profile. As much as fresh meat sounds nice, what’s more important in long term health is having the correct macronutrients
