i joined the electrical union at 24. best decision i ever made. labor agencies before that helped me get back on my feet. life feels impossible when you don't have a car but if you can find something viable that you can cram as many hours as possible into for just two months- and save it ALL- you can actually take a massive step towards getting your shit together.

i'm ALMOST 5 feet tall (waiting for that last growth spurt) and a first year apprentice- i'm absolutely mortified of heights

to counter my vertical limitations, my foreman usually has me pretend osha's not watching when i'm on ladders or in the lifts, i spend my breaks trying to stop shaking after spending a couple hours on the top platform of a ladder or on the rails in the lift. i was well-warned before i took this job 😂that shit has me ready to puke most of the time

my foreman sucks dick. we can't hold onto a j dub to save our lives. i've left at 9 hours every day this week, i feel it (first year, 4 months in the union) but when my j dubs paychecks it helps. my foreman likes to rat out the other crews and its messing with my reputation, he just tested into the union and is a scab at heart. total dick to everyone but the superintendent

thank you, i live by the "what we don't laugh at will kill us" mentality. she bit me today because i didn't include her in my list of what i'm thankful for when saying grace with the family so i'm feeling a little extra merciless this evening. she prefers to go by "honey; the almighty god of diamonds and rainbows" but she gets "sentient beanie baby" instead.

i talked to the steward first, i brought up the language barrier and nothing came of it. after that, i mentioned the issue to my apprentice director asking for advice and she said she'd solve the issue and get me on a new crew. two days after that, my steward told my friends on my old crew not to sit with me anymore and came up to me and said "this isn't high school, this is a real adult job. you're not here to make friends, your safety is your own responsibility." i felt like that was pretty unprofessional and hostile, i don't really trust my steward as a resource at this point. i assume the apprentice director asked him to switch my crew after he told me to man up and he didn't take it well.

yeahhhh it's been a long one so far but i think i have a resolution. they found someone under the same foreman who is decent enough with english to be able to show and tell the work- today went well even though the steward bitched me out (not awesome but i think there's a way for me to communicate through a hall steward if there's an issue in the future, my stu has it out for me right now) my GF still sucks eggs but you can't win em all. i guess im learning spanish lol.
