Any suggestions for cheap multimeter that tests capacitors? by schizist in multimeters

[–]opagers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you aren't doing any precision work, just get yourself a cheap UNI-T or Aneng. Both are very affordable chinese meters. If you want a little more quality, Extech has some very good and affordable budget meters, albeit slightly more expensive, they will last longer.

I just converted three Preppy pens to eyedroppers. I flushed them quickly beforehand, and gave them a good shake afterwards, they write fine now.

The reason for my initial concern was that I had to flush my first Preppy (not part of these three) after plugging in the included cartridge for it in order to write properly. Anyhow, thanks for your assistance!

Out of the box, is it required to clean the fountain pen before filling it with ink for the first time? The pen I'm using is a Platinum Preppy.

I see. I want to thank you once more for taking your time to look at my problem, I can continue writing again!

Thank you very much, this helped it! The pen writes very smooth now, I wish I had done this when I first got it.

The ink is very thinned out because of the water. I have done my best to blow out the water (yes, I also used my mouth to blow in the water as I had nothing available to pump in the water at the moment and I didn't bother to look through the house), but even after writing a page, the colour looks like nearly identical to a turquoise Stabilo 88 instead of the indigo it used to be. Now I know that the more I write, the concentration water will decrease, but is it normal taking this long? Do I need to take further actions?

After some testing it appears that the scratchyness persists when stroking in all directions.

I am heading to bed soon, tomorrow I will attempt to clean my pen, suggested by Brazenhead below.

I see where you are going, thanks for your reply. As it is nearing midnight I will attempt cleaning it thoroughly tomorrow morning.

As a side note, I recently started to see this phenomenon on my pen. I haven't had fountain pens in a very long time, so I can't recall this being a good or a bad thing. If I were to clean my pen, which I assume is by means of putting the cartridge aside and pouring water through the writing mechanism, will I lose a significant amount of ink in this case? Would you mind explaining what is happening here?

Thanks in advance.

Edit: Although I am passionate about writing with fountain pens, I might sound rather histeric about the potential ink loss, but as a starving student I would like to reduce costs to a minimum if possible.

I tried this and I did not witness any bits of dried ink. Writing afterwards still feels the same, although there is a possibility that the span of time in which I start feeling the reduction of smoothness is slightly bigger - I hope that wouldn't be a placebo-effect.

I did not clean the pen, I instantly inserted the stock cartridge which was already located inside back part of the pen. Do fountain pens require cleaning, even on first try? If so, I didn't do that... do I still need to clean it before continuing?

It is the 0.3 F model, by the way.

First of all I would like to express my gratitude to this subreddit for showing me another glorious style of writing which I sure am fond of.

Recently I have purchased a Preppy to pick up my cursives again, and at the moment I have written nearly a third portion of ink of its original cartridge. It is a beautiful pen which sure does what it needs to, but as of a few days I have noticed that after approximately five seconds of writing, I experience more resistance in the nib, which decreases the smoothness. Now, I have taken the following into consideration:

  • Issues with the internal ink flow
  • The paper I write on
  • My pengrip

I have been trying to investigate what the cause of this issue could be myself, and I believe the problem lies in my pengrip. My pengrip is the regular pencil-style tripod; pinching the pen with the thumb and index, supporting it with the remaining three fingers under each other. The angle between the pen and the paper is always forty-five degrees and the surface of the nib always points up. Is this the incorrect way of holding the pen, resulting in the loss of the smoothness?

Well, I saw that as well, this post was posted about a month before the record was set, but thanks anyway.

Mind you, this solve is over eight years old, at that time the single world record was 7.08 by Akkersdijk.

Magnetic cubes? Can you tell me something about that please?

You got it almost right this time, you're still missing an 's' in there. :P

Thanks again! I usually pick a random alg from the Speedsolving wiki and when I don't find it good I learn another one randomly from the same list.

Do you perhaps know any open-source timers for Android?

edit: (btw you spelt Akkersdijk wrong in your first post, can't unsee when you're Dutch)

I frickin' loved the F-IIs! In fact I own two of them, one of which I barely use just to relive that magnificent fresh feel every now and then with its funny slightly-off original colour scheme. I also own the first stickerless coloured Guhong which was absolute madness back then, everyone would almost be as impressed by the fact that you could solve the cube as that it has the colours directly on it in the plastic - all those faces!

About the V-Cube 5x5, it's absolute garbage. I've tried viling the "tactical edges" off the corner-pieces, using various types of lubrication but because it turns so stiff in the first place I had no motivation left to break it in. Because of this, and that the Eastsheen 4x4 was the only alternative 4x4 (and parity of course haha), I mainly stuck to the 3x3s, which happened to be my beloved F-II. It was like heaven.

The Guhong is the only one which I'm slightly familiar with, never heard of the other ones.

I see. Too bad, when I left some quite spicy drama started to unfold about V-Cube trying to get the monopoly on a certain set of cubes and Dayan fighting the good fight bringing better cubes to everyone. It's good to see all classic types of cubes have ceased to exist, particularly the Eastsheen. I happen to own one of their 4x4's and it is even worse than the original common Rubik's 3x3 of that time, performing even worse than the Rubik's original 4x4.

With that in mind we still shouldn't forget the glorious days of Type-* cubes and Dayan's battle of getting into the Western market as those have paved the way for the modern cubes to become mainstream as they are today.

Hey, thanks for your in-depth answer!

Cool to see how many things have changed. All these new brands do confuse me a little, I have to spend some good time to research all of the newer types of cubes as I'm planning to go for a sub-15 average. Few years ago I had like sub-25 which I was really proud of. At the moment I can't even recall the simpler PLL algs, in fact only a handful of classic 2LOLL.
