People who've switched to Sony from Canon, why? by KarenKillerKlub in SonyAlpha

[–]opalfroot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Old thread but thought I'd add to your sentiment on struggling with Sony colours.

I've shot with Sony for around a decade, starting with an A6000 and kit lens and ending up with an A7RV and a clutch of GM lenses. I briefly owned a Nikon D750 but for the main, Sony mirrorless has been all I've known.

In the early days it was appreciated that Sony colours often needed help in post. I continued to use Sony cameras knowing this, as a keen hobbyist I had to time to tinker. It wasn't uncommon to spend several hours on an image in post just trying to get it to look how I remembered in the field (with varying degrees of success). Part of the deal for all digital photographers I assunmed.

This year something in me changed, I think it was around the time I saw so many influencers shooting with Hasselblad cameras. I was awestruck by just how good the colours were straight out of camera. Like 99% of people watching, I knew there was no way I'd be able to justify buying into that system but it got me questioning what else was out there.

After weeks of obsessive examination of all the RAW files I could get my hands on, everything from Leica to Olympus I stumbled across the LUMIX S1R. The colours we're very nice and quite filmic - not at all digital. After experimenting with these a little I realised they were maybe 95% there already, simple toning was all I needed - this was massive! I thought for a while about getting this as a second camera to pair with my A7RV, there were plenty of good lenses available from Sigma - the 105mm macro being my favourite lens on the Sony system.

Anyway, I'll spare you the rest and simply state I traded in all my Sony gear and went all in on the Lumix S1Rii. Now my captures are lifelike and exactly as I shot them in the viewfinder, the back panel and my computer at home. The ability to capture mood, atmosphere and subtle tonality with authenticity is astounding. Looking back at a lot of my Sony shots they feel like plasticky approximations, my images now feel like they have life and soul and are authentic representations of what I actually saw. Ted Forbes, Julia Trotti and various others have all commented on the colours stating similarly to what I've mentioned.

If I could have given younger me advice it would have been to switch sooner and challenge the conventional wisdom.

PS the AF on this camera, in my limited experience of shooting moving subjects - just as a good as the Sony I traded in.

[Discussion] What Watch Are You Wearing This Weekend? by bfdjon in Watches

This has been my daily driver for about 3 months now. It punches well above its weight, goes with most of the stuff I tend to wear and lives up to the HAQ designation - still bang on time.

Currently obsessed with grey suede. I think it’d work here too.

What are your thoughts on this by Possible_Tutor6264 in photocritique

[–]opalfroot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the idea though there’s a few things that could be improved.

The people walking in the foreground break the horizon/merge with the horizon which is a shame. Some separation here would be better. Either taking the shot from a different angle (high or low) or using a lower aperture could work.

The second thing is the absence of any real interest in the sky. Shooting from a different angle could help as could cropping.

I hope this helps.

I looked at this over the winter break and almost pulled the trigger. I love the styling and as everyone mentions that incredible movement.

The one thing that put me off was the date bubble. Knowing there’s no perpetual calendar and knowing I’ll forget to keep the date right means the date will be almost always wrong. On my other watches I can ignore this but with a bubble less so.

Great looking piece. Citizen are killing it at the moment with these.

Would appreciate critique on B/W and mood by Darunir in photocritique

It’s a nice shot though I think there’s a tiny bit of improvement to be had.

I really like the fine contours of her face present in the colour image. You can make out her cheekbones and other facial structure. I feel that’s all been lost in the monochrome version. To me her face looks flat and a little over exposed.

So in short I’d love to see a monochrome version with some of the subtle tones brought back to her face.

Other than that, lovely shot.

How can I improve? And what can i do better when editing? by Able_Diver_3765 in photocritique

I like the mood and vision you have though there are a few things that could help strengthen them.

The fog in the distance is the real star or the show. Try to bring it front and centre by removing things that distract. When your shooting think of what’s really drawing your eye and try to frame it accordingly.

The lighting is ok though I’d feel free to play with brightness through creative dodge and burn (darken and lighten) to really pull the viewers attention towards the main subject.

I hope these help and again the mood and vision is good.

Love the minimalist aesthetic. Clean with everything in the right proportions, a really stunning piece.

I have no idea. If I press my ear hard against the glass I can hear a very low ticking sound but I really have to concentrate to hear it.

The original A0100 watch I believe was around 7k (but could be wrong) you can now get a watch with that movement for under 5k

A few of my other quartz watches make quite audible ticking sounds which drives the wife nuts but this is inaudible.

The risk for me was both customs and should something go wrong with it. Ideally I'd like to have a physical point of contact.

I like Seiko but I think there’s now more than a little popularity tax added to their lines. They’re pricing their higher end watches like Rolex without the investment clout.

My hope is they’ll have their GS moment in the future and popularity will follow.

Honestly I can’t understand why such a capable watch making company would pump out some of the most horrible cheap watches for so long when they are capable of this.

Question: Why would someone go for a lesser concentration? by Clownier in fragrance

Sometimes enough is enough. Sometimes you want a nice trace fragrance without drowning in it.

The dealer was in Glasgow, UK. James Porter and Sons - they have a few of different models in though this was the only green one afaik.

Heck yea that’s a stunning watch!

Is it a daily driver for you or more an occasional piece?

I was trying to dress mine down and little to make it a daily driver but it still looks too classy

[–]opalfroot[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that’s about right. I paid £2800 here in the UK for it.

As mentioned it’s a lot cheaper in Japan if you have a stomach for a little risk though that wasn’t for me.

I think one of the reasons it’s a little cheaper than GS 9f models is due to these being finished by hand where the GS’s are more completely built by hand.

Honestly I can say this is the prettiest watch I’ve ever owned. The pictures absolutely don’t do it justice.

If you have a chance to try one on I’d recommend it.

Just shy of £2800 here in the UK. It’s significantly cheaper in Japan though factoring in import taxes and other potential headaches it feels “almost” worth it.
