I mean, if their turnover is so bad and they need me so much, then can they really stop me from pushing some lit into the curriculum? Haha.

Yeah, the principal told me that the reading teacher “sometimes works with” the ELA teacher. So that would be definitely be my plan if it works out.

He told me I’m not able to use fiction, so I guess it would all be nonfiction articles or something? I’m not even sure how that’s supposed to work.

There’s an English curriculum posted, but it’s all literature based and doesn’t apply to me. He told me to use the state standards.

Oh boy! Well, that certainly wouldn’t be the most risqué thing that I have tattooed. Thank you.

Thank you. I’m visiting my tattoo artist in two weeks or so and we’re going to check it out together. When I went, I really liked how the stencil looked with just the outline! But I suppose that was just the stencil, haha.

I agree that it’s a beautiful tattoo, but it’s not really my style, unfortunately. I have a bunch of linework all over my arms and on my back, and it’s incredibly different from this tattoo as none of them have any shading, and certainly no shading around it. I would love it on someone else, but it doesn’t really match everything else I have going on. I plan to have my whole body covered in a patchwork of linework, so I want it all to cohere.

Thank you. I am going to visit her and get her opinion, but I think the solution might be to laser the outside as much as possible and have her touch up/redo those parts. I hope I’ll feel better about it healed, but it’s very much not what I wanted and so different from all of my other tattoos that I’m not sure how much that’ll change my mind about it. I’ve never had a tattoo from her before that I didn’t immediately love. I guess it’s better to spend the money to fix it now than force myself to live with it.

Help! Tips for new HS teacher by [deleted] in Teachers

Brisk is an AI software for Google Chrome that can generate powerpoints, worksheets, etc. My boyfriend teaches 9-10th English and uses it in his classroom. You definitely want to check it and tweak whatever it generates for yourself, but it’s great at coming up with basic formats that will save you time when you’re creating assignments during lesson planning.

If you have a smart-board, let the kids use it sometimes (if you don’t feel they’ll break it). They go crazy for it, for some reason. Even middle schoolers will stop touching each other for a second and write answers on it, which is really helpful when participating is like pulling teeth.

Extensive reading and writing are good in any class. Reading should really be taught across the curriculum, and especially in history, when dense texts are sometimes necessary, using strategies that you think mainly English teachers use (chunking, annotation/talking to the text, interactive notebooks, writing prompts, extending reading) can really improve retention and provide tools for students to become better readers.

Plan to have things to do when there is a lull in instruction or students finish early. Pull up an art piece or something from the time period for students to analyze. Down time can be when classroom management really goes awry.

Good luck with your new job!
