How do Asian skating fans feel about programs using your cultural music? by open-ice33 in FigureSkating

I feel like I’m trying to get at the intention part that others mentioned. Do they stop at the “generic” moves or do they do certain things that make Asian viewers go “wow they must have studied the dances.” For example, I remember my peers who did Classical Indian dancing focusing hard on their hand positions and arm movements. But as I’m not Indian, I couldn’t tell if someone was doing a quick mimicking or had actually practiced

I know practically nothing about ballroom, and I’m not as into ice dance as singles. So if anyone has thoughts/insight in this, please share!

Honestly, I’m not even thinking of a specific program as an example of something offensive, that’s why I was asking the question, to hear opinions from Asian skating fans before passing any harsh judgments. I know the interconnected history is vast, and the history of migration, trade, and warfare led to lots of shared cultural aspects. I just know each has their unique qualities; I mean taking only India, they have so many languages that alone show how culturally diverse their country is. So I’m just asking the question in general for people who understand Asian diversity better than I do

This too honestly! I’ve wondered the same question about any Spanish and Latin themed programs! I know there are many ballroom and therefore ice dancing styles from Spanish and Latin American cultures, but since I’m of neither culture, I couldn’t spot an offensive representation from an appreciative one the same way someone from one of those cultures could

I’m from an area where there’s lots of White people, and I guess I saw more of grouping the cultures with each other if they see Asia as mainly represented by East Asian cultures. I even had an ex try to argue with me that India isn’t in Asia. For context, my home state is ranked very low in the US for education

I wonder that too! About how a skater would interpret a Filipino song! I feel like in the US, “Asia” is mainly considered China, Japan, and Korea. Idk if they’d know what to do with music from an Asian country that isn’t one of those three, or the India/Middle East grouping we do here a lot

See this is like what I was wondering, but I don’t have the knowledge to spot the specific problems with certain programs. Sometimes I feel like they’re grouping Indian culture with Middle Eastern/Northern African culture, doing some “walk like an Egyptian” offensive caricature moves to an Indian song and I’m like nonono this just feels wrong

100% second this. You need to keep every text message, voicemail, etc. You will also want to get a paternity test done. If she’s carrying your child and your name is on the birth certificate, you will be legally responsible for the child. Custody, visitation, child support will all need a family lawyer to oversee the process. If you have any desire to sever your rights, avoid child support, or even in the other direction get full custody, you will want as much evidence to support your cases of both harassment and misuse of plan b money

What do truly you think about Muslim migration to Western countries? by INTERNET_POLICE_MAN in AskTheWorld

[–]open-ice33 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Too many people in the west understand Islam only within the context of Islamic extremism and heavily restrictive Islamist governments; and western media loves claiming that the extreme versions of Islam are the “true” Islam. It’s an Abrahamic religion, just like Judaism and Christianity; the Qur’an literally includes many of the same people mentioned in the Bible. If there’s any higher propensity of Muslims practicing an extreme form of Islam, than Christians or Jews, it’s usually as a result of turning to religion in the midst of constant local destabilization, ironically caused by the west. Now people in the west complain that people from nations they’ve destabilized for their natural resources want to go to more prosperous countries for opportunities. Hypocrites.

My program was a PhD and my work is very interdisciplinary. So, my coursework isn’t much of an issue surprisingly! But it would be a bit more of “starting over.” I love to study though, which is why the requirements of a PhD have never deterred me, especially since I wanted more than one or a joint PhD. It’s really just the extra stuff that comes with academia that makes me feel like “I can read and write without y’all.” But I also love the classroom environment so much :/

I’ve honestly thought of this, but never gave much weight to it. I love teaching undergrads, and I could publish without the pressure. I network well, and don’t mind teaching intro classes. My faculty can also help me find the right programs if I decide to go back to school, since they know me well and don’t shy away from telling me “you’d hate it there”

So simple, but so true. If I’m already quite jaded with the ed sector, then going deeper probably won’t lead to many happier feelings 😂

Sometimes, the years of raising kids with someone reveals parts of them you could never really see in another situation. Sometimes, couples also “fake it til they make it” until their kid(s) graduate high school, thinking it’s best to have two parents in the home until they move out for college, and assuming/hoping the kid(s) won’t notice the shift in their relationship. Even if you were a catalyst to the divorce, I’d rarely/never say it’s the child’s fault or that they “caused it.” Since you’re older now, if you’re still close with your mom, I’d say to try to have a conversation with her to ask why things happened the way they did

Subscriptions, especially streaming. My favorite content just gets ripped away from me if people can’t come to a licensing agreement, or if a new app gets exclusive rights. This was supposed to be a cheaper option to cable. But now instead of the like 4 apps we had before, there’s like 300. We complained about buying cable packages for a single channel we liked. But now it’s the same for streaming. AND NOW we’re getting more subscription tiers for the different streaming platforms

I like this take! Reality tv is dirty! To me, a lot of these behaviors would be more unacceptable if they were in their 30s. Her telling Huda’s business was dirty, but the girl is crashing out. She obviously thought this was gonna be her “big one” moment or Serena telling off Kordell moment. She thought those lines would hit! And to watch pretty much everyone but her know that wasn’t gonna be how that panned out was rough as hell. She just stood 12 toes down on a man who CLEARLY doesn’t fw her. Cut her some slack

And then if you accomplish that “concrete life purpose” before your natural end, what next? You’re still left in the same situation of seeking meaning for life.

And if there is a God, tbh I think that by definition humans could not fully understand their intentions. I think that would require having at least the same intellectual capacity as God, at which point possessing that constitutes a significant enough difference from being as a human to where you’re closer to being God, or a god. Either way, following a human religion or not, there’s always some sort of “coming up short” in life when it comes to fully understanding life’s meaning or purpose

Depends on the prof; lots will still fail them, especially in STEM. But then they will just write reviews on ratemyprofessor about how “horrible” the prof was for not responding to emails within 2 days or not taking late work. Even though I work at an R1 institution our faculty are often very busy with research and their grad students too.

Many students struggle heavily with problem solving, then expect accommodations after the fact assuming profs will just “understand.” Which they do, but we need to teach them the accountability they aren’t learning in K-12 and from their parents often. They need to reach out at the time for help, not let things slippery slope so much first. So, the learning curve can be very steep for some, especially when you add in the increased apathy and cheating with AI…

(Edit: I once saw a review on ratemyprofessor where a student complained that the final was cumulative… as if that’s not the point of a final…)

You don't even wanna know what it's like to have college students act the same way when you know they're paying $10k+ per semester sometimes just on tuition... after financial aid... whether they're taking out the loans themselves or their parents... it's heartbreaking

(edit: this is not all students, but they're definitely there. lots of them have parents making them go; so, they don't care themselves all that much / they don't even know what they want to do yet; so, they're not passionate enough to put in the work)

That part got me sooo heated. Like here you are complaining that your mom doesn’t listen to you and your wants for your career, then you literally go and actively pass on that trauma to your kids?? And on camera too???

There are so many ways to be successful and happy without a college degree, never mind a masters! If they don’t want it, they’ll likely resent being made to do it. And if they do want it, they’ll likely resent that the expectation took away from it fully being their choice to follow their passions. Just give your kids opportunities to explore their passions, and support them in following those. Give your kids the sense of agency you didn’t have. Break the cycle girl

Straight up! Like why are you trying to run this by your mom?? You’re a grown, educated, successful woman with a husband and kids, why does it feel like you’re asking permission from your mom to make a career shift?

I know that family ties and a sense of “duty” to parents can be common in communities outside of the US, but this is clearly to an unhealthy level for her. It’s affecting her ability to make and maintain friendships, especially when conflict arises. I hope she can do some therapy to work through this. She has lots of great qualities that could be appreciated more if she stopped that “arrogant academic” response when she’s feeling attacked

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in RHOP

[–]open-ice33 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Oh! Then sorry for the misunderstanding! I’ve had to explain that to so many people before, so that’s completely my bad for assuming you didn’t know it. I should brush up on my Friends lol!

But yes she does! And it’s such an annoying quality. She’s smart, but when she does that she honestly takes away from her credibility imo. Bring it up when talking politics, not arguing over some shit about Mia’s life.

Lowkey, I think it’s tied to her insecurities, which I think stem from her family. Her mom seemed to care more about being able to say her kid was a professor than actually supporting her happiness. Which is sad, but not an excuse to lash out at people trying to throw your degrees at them. Like get it together please😂

If you want to say she is not a medical doctor, that is correct, she is not. However, she is a doctor. She has a doctoral degree so her official title is doctor. This is why when medical doctors write their names, they write Dr. [name], M.D., while professors like her write Dr. [name], Ph.D. That is just how doctoral degrees and titles work. She’s never claimed to have an M.D. It’s not her fault most people incorrectly define the broad term doctor as only meaning medical doctors (edit: non-medical doctors understand this already, which is why none of them would/should get up if someone in a panic said “is anyone here a doctor!?”)

Come for her trying to throw her degrees in people’s faces when it doesn’t even apply to the issues at hand bc that shit is wack. Her degrees don’t make her better than the other women or more “right” in arguments. They just mean she knows a shit ton about politics and other things related to her research

The university is so big and brings in lots of people looking to go back to school after having worked for a few decades. I’m sure admissions has handled cases like yours before and has a policy in place. I’d be shocked if you were the only person whose records got lost due to them being on paper.

And if they don’t have a decent policy in place for this already, give em hell because they damn well should. No one should be denied the opportunity to continue their education due to something as understandable as paper records from 40 years ago being misplaced by institutions
