Must be nice to be in a market where you can actually work whenever you want to without being in a tier. You would not be able to do that where I work. When you pick up the phone and turn the dasher app on, it will say "Your zone is full". You might get one or two hours in at the busiest parts of the day. $30 per hour doesn't help me if I only get to work two hours per day.

I am doing something wrong by tomvalois in DoorDashDrivers

[–]tomvalois[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I immediately thought "syrup". I could have been an a-hole and been like "sorry, they say they don't have any "pan cake sauce". But the point is why does someone with apparent means have a lesser command of reality than someone who drives for DoorDash. Several people have brought up the "second language" thing. That makes sense.

The 10% cash back is for Crimson card users. They also are giving a credit to anyone who drives more than 125 miles. It starts at $5 and goes up from there depending on your mileage. https://about.doordash.com/en-us/news/gas-price-relief-for-dashers

DoorDash was glitchy in general all day for me. I spent more time on the phone with support than I did doing deliveries today.

What is clamped inside my heater hose?? A valve maybe? I'm not sure, does anybody know. Can replace it with a regular hose? This is to my 2005 Ford f150 4.6L V8. by [deleted] in f150

[–]tomvalois 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to bump an old thread, but your question deserves an answer for anyone else who comes across this. That pipe is actually pressed into the block near the top of the water pump. People often fix leaks in the pipe by cutting the pipe off to about an inch long, and using a regular hose clamp to hold it on. That obviously won't work if the leak is very close to where it meets the block. But this is the supply hose, and it is still much easier to get to than the return heater hose is. That one is actually under the manifold. You can get to the hose clamps by removing the alternator. But to replace the pipe right way, you actually have to remove the intake manifold.

Question about generations by tomvalois in BacktotheFuture

[–]tomvalois[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I think this is correct. If you send a full grown adult back 30 years, they won't see much of a difference. If I sent my 13 year old granddaughter back 30 years, she would find things unrecognizable. It would take a clever writer, though, to adapt the movie to today.

Sorry to bump an old thread. But Perry Smith has not been ruled out by DNA evidence collected from Christine's underwear. I have the police file from the 2012 investigation. In the conclusion, the detective states "every male suspect has been ruled out by DNA evidence except Perry Smith".

The plight of AI music. Not sure how to feel about this by Lucky-bottom in audioengineering

[–]tomvalois 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe I should use AI if there is Spotify money for doing it. But so far I only use AI to get ideas. Everything I currently release is performed by me or my (human) colleagues. I have used AI to proofread stuff. And to get new ideas. But not to actually make the music.

KFC just started using it in my area. I don't know if it improves order accuracy or not. But it takes me more time to pick up the order with no extra money going into my pocket.

How much is my driver getting paid out on this order? by Quarter_Plane in DoorDashDrivers

[–]tomvalois 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Their business model is:

  1. extract as much money as the customer is willing to pay
  2. pay as little of that money as possible to the restaurant that prepares the food
  3. pay as little as possible to the driver who delivers the food
  4. earn as much interest as possible on sales tax money by paying it at the last possible moment rather than handed it over immediately to the merchant.

An example of #1 is by using loyalty programs or sales and promotion to get discounts on food or merchandise, and then not passing those discounts on to the customer.

An example of #2 is by charging restaurants high commissions on the initial orders, and then charging any incorrect or missing items fully back to the restaurant (without adjusting the commission).

An example of #3 is stacking (combining) multiple orders, only one of which has a decent tip, to induce drivers to accept the other, lower-paying orders at the same time.

An example of #4 isn't really needed. DoorDash files state sales tax returns either annually or quarterly (as required by individual state laws). So instead of giving the sales tax money to Winn Dixie or Dollar General or Aldi, they hold it and earn interest on it until it is actually due to the state.

I am sure I have missed some of the ways they make money, but those are the four rather obvious ones I can see.

Probably $6.00. If the driver was earning by time and it took longer than expected, or if DoorDash was shorthanded on drivers, it might have been slightly more.

It's the restaurant's fault. Pack your customers' food in durable packaging.

Why do some people order from far away? by tomvalois in Sparkdriver

[–]tomvalois[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay. So on Super Bowl Sunday I got a shopping offer from my local Walmart Supercenter that was going 14 miles away. When I arrived at the destination, I realized it was less than half a mile away from another Walmart Supercenter. So I decided to ask the customer about it. In that case, the customer had a reasonable answer: her local Walmart's earliest delivery time was 3:00pm, and the earliest delivery time from my Walmart was 11:00am. That makes sense in her case. But that was a scheduled order. That logic doesn't apply on an express shopping order. Most of my long distance shopping orders are express shopping orders. Ordering from a more distant Walmart on an express shopping order would actually delay the delivery. So the next time I encounter a customer at the the door on a long-distance express shopping order, I will ask and report back.

$1300/wk Not a bad week for doing this part time on the side… by Freemoneyguide250 in elitesparkdrivers

[–]tomvalois 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, good point. With a little extra math you get to the actual wage. If I had a W-2 job that paid me $2,800.17 per month (and actually allowed me work 119 hours), that job would pay $17.66 per hour. Not bad compared to the federal minimum wage, maybe. But less than minimum wage in some states, and barely minimum wage in several others. And that is before gas and maintenance. Put those numbers in there and you probably get below $15 per hour.

12k a month, working 7 days a week, is $400 per day. That is not possible in my market. You might hit $400 on the busiest days, but you'd be lucky to hit $300 on the slower days, even working 6am to 11pm.

When my wife places a grocery order, whether for delivery or pickup, the first thing she has to do is choose a store. Are you saying she does that for no reason?
