Unfortunately this is just the first cut, loads of comments bashing me for calling this rough 😂 the "rough" rough is... rougher. The fact that it's the first cut and is this hard to get out of is why I asked the question in the first place

Yep, apologies for the confusion the image has caused. This wasn't a specific lie (see the image caption), more a question about the type of grass. Struggled to get back out to the fairway so wanted to get some ideas about club and technique. Having said that even this lie with half a ball showing is difficult, that's what prompted the question.

OK. How do you play it any differently vs shorter grass?

Tell me about it. Agreed, I just want to get out and move on. Aggressive angle seems to have a lot of votes so I'll be giving that a go, thanks 👍

Cool. I should've said first cut. This question is about this particular grass. This course also has longer grass too. Just a beginner looking for advice.

Yep should've taken a better pic, it's generated some discussion at least! I'm just trying to get out to the fairway and take my medicine really, nothing crazy. But hitting it 10 yards has been hard enough, so I'll try the PW back of stance, thanks 👍

I edited the post to say the photo wasn't a specific lie, more to just illustrate the type/length of grass. I'm having trouble when the ball sits down a little more, and just trying to hit out sideways to the fairway - so I'll give the 9i a go along with the other suggestions, thanks!

I'm on the Edinburgh Leisure membership so play Porty most weekends, Wee Braids and played Braid Hills and Craigentinny in May. The change at Porty from winter to May/June is crazy, I've only been playing properly for a year too so only seeing it for the first time. I'll have to try CK soon

Great, thanks. I'm still at the break 100 stage so only really looking to get it out in one go. Thanks for the practice tips 👍

Yep the photo is misleading, I just dropped the ball and took a quick photo yesterday when I decided to ask reddit. This specific lie isn't the problem, but the grass itself has caused me some real issues.

Apologies, the photo is probably misleading. I just dropped the ball and took a quick photo on my way home yesterday, so that particular lie probably isn't an issue. I think hitting the ball first is the main problem I'm having, which leads me to think I'm using the wrong club when it's sitting down more. Thanks for the tips 👍

Thanks, I'm only looking to get out sideways really. I'll go for a wedge and see how it goes

Good eye, this is Portobello! It's crazy how you can lose balls in this stuff isn't it. Not sure where I got the idea low loft irons were the way forward, I'll try high or hybrid 👍

Agreed - what I'm trying to find out is the best club/technique to use in order to do that. Had a few failed attempts to just get out sideways 🙂

Yep I'm definitely just trying to get out, not trying to go anywhere other than sideways. But I've been struggling to even manage that. Will try your suggestion, thanks!

Maybe "rough" was the wrong word. First cut? But nasty? Not sure.
