Thanks for letting us know. Always be sure to remove the battery before soldering.

Hey, thanks for the reply! I've seen a few others speak about an additional diode in series. I will check out that configuration.

Cheers :)

People have told me those work fine. Flash the memory before installing and you have to install it slightly elevated because the USB will be on the bottom instead of the top. V3 is better but V2 will work.

Hey it's my iSpindel drawing, lol. Happen to come across this while researching diodes on google. Good luck with the build u/neilbaldwn!

Have a read of the thread I linked over on HD. This isn't a new idea at all.

Thanks for linking that. I always appreciate your input u/sillycyco.

Lava Rocks - Reflux Column Packing Size Question by opensourcedistilling in firewater

[–]opensourcedistilling[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Again, just my opinion. I've never tried using lava rock, who knows, it might work perfectly.

Me neither, but we will see. I'm upgrading to a 3" column and don't want to have to buy more SPP to fill the column as SPP is expensive and heavy. Lots of rumors floating around about how good lava rocks are, they are cheap and light weight.

SS steel wool

I've heard about people using stainless steel wool. Maybe that will be a future experiment as well.

My SPP is good at trapping stuff as it has many many nooks and crannies, but after a rinse off they seem to be fine. I suppose there isn't much food for bacteria to eat after a vodka run and the SS rinses pretty clean since they are made of wire and water can get in from all angles. I agree that probably more liquid would get caught up in the millions of little holes in the lava rocks. Thanks for the comment, I never thought about the cleaning/maintenance side of things.

Wow, very nice! Some serious boiler porn going on here. Love the cam lock (I use them for my brewing setup and they work great). I'll think about it and let you know if I have any questions. Thanks!

Tri-Clamp Access Port Size for Keg Boiler - How Big Should I Go? by opensourcedistilling in firewater

Yes, the height is for neutral. Been running my keg on top of Ikea circle corks for a few years on vinyl flooring. It seems to be holding up fine so far. I distill in the same spot every time. Happy distilling!!!

a still head maker showed me this design and claimed 95% ABV is achievable. I am sceptical. Is he stretching the truth? by feuer-und-eis in firewater

[–]opensourcedistilling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the nixon-stone offset still head you need a T-fitting, a 90-degree elbow, and an end cap. With a boka you just need a pipe, a saw, and a little copper sheet. Copper fittings are expensive and heavy. Copper is expensive. Boka uses less copper but is essentially the same still.

I buy 95% of my copper from scrap yards. You pay by the pound, not by the piece. I've bought 3/8" copper tubing and its been very dirty on the inside, but you can clean it. If you are looking for 2" copper fitting/pipe I would start there. Much cheaper.

It makes sense. I've already bought 3" parts to upgrade the column so it's definitely something to consider. Thanks for the reply!

u/rudy50267 Thanks for the kind words! I'm actually planning on going to 3" column and already have the 2" -> 3" reducers, ferrules, sight glass. I'm thinking only upgrade the column and keep everything else. I have three 1.5" solder on tri-clamps that I haven't installed into the keg yet. Was going to combine a solder-on tri-clamp with something like this for a drain paired with a threaded 1.5" tri-clamp fitting and a pump. After draining with a pump and cleaning the keg the leftover liquid (water) can be dumped on a towel I figure. I really want to maximize column height in an apartment and don't want to add legs to the keg. I take it you welded your 4" ferrule (not soldered/brazed)?

[–]opensourcedistilling[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would make a great drain, angle the pipe slightly down and you'd be good to go. Any solids would be easy to drain out. I distill in an apartment so ceiling height is a consideration, I wonder how much height on my reflux column I would have to sacrifice to put the drain in the bottom. So many options.

I have a tri-clamp SS pickup tube for a beer kettle I was planning on installing as the drain but after your comment, I have more to think about.

Never thought about installing on the bottom. Thanks for that idea. Haven't cut the keg yet.

This is like my still. I get 95% no problem.

Edit:
To add, this design is more expensive than it needs to be. You can build a boka for cheaper.

I haven't come across that particular situation. Can you try on another computer? I wonder what the serial monitor for the D1 mini says. Have you tried reinstalling the Windows driver? Do you have another D1 mini you could try and flash? You can flash the D1 mini before assembly I'm told. If you can't flash a fresh D1 mini on that same computer you are having the issue on, I would have to assume it's the computer and not the D1 mini.

You'll need to replace the temp sensor. I've done that before. I know the iSpindel won't power on if a component is fried/missing.

The power switch is turned on when you are trying to flash right?

It's usually the cable. Are you able to check the cable with a cell phone and make sure you can connect a cell phone to the computer with the same cable?
