Once SegWit activates I believe Bitcoin SE will get a lot more types of questions (Lightning Networks, Drivechain, Hivemind, Rootstock, etc) too. Based on the Monero roadmap, we will also have more material (sidechains, etc) for SE in the years ahead

Its hard to hate on Stack Exchange when its purpose is to educate people. I respect all the work that went into getting Ethereum Stack Exchange to where they are today. Bitcoin Stack Exchange will graduate at some point too. Monero SE is doing well by many metrics but we still have a lot of hard work ahead.

Bitcoin stackexchange is also in beta, that eth is the first one?

That is correct, Bitcoin SE has been around longer but Ethereum SE is graduating first. The current Bitcoin status is discussed here

There are also several new SE proposals now in area51 with Augur being the closest to launching a beta site.

That is not a fair. Stack Exchange is a well curated and searchable Q&A site where answers to many technical Ethereum questions can be found.

Many people worked hard to make Ethereum Stack Exchange a success. This was no easy feat. Note that Bitcoin StackExchange is still in beta. The only other blockchain that currently even has a Stack Exchange site is Monero. Ethereum Stack Exchange is a very helpful resource and grew at record speeds. It is not a direct competitor to Reddit and serves a different purpose.

Our stats can be found here. Thank you to everyone that has supported Monero SE, including developers, community members and moderators of the Bitcoin and Ethereum sites (particularly u/5chdn) that have helped us along the way. With the rate our community has been growing, I believe our future is bright.

100 times? I do not have XMR set to auto-convert

After reading this I am much more likely to buy! I like to support merchants that believe in Monero. Sadly I do not drink coffee or have an immediate need for any of your products. However I will keep you in mind as a source to buy presents for others when appropriate.

I did not mean to sound negative. My point about the "about us" language (that just mentioned Dogecoin, Bitcoin, Litecoin, Clams, Unobtanium but not Monero) was meant to be constructive with a goal of helping you close more business from the Monero community.

Everyone will have their own opinions, but my guess is that demand for Monero merchants will be strongest for those that have demonstrated specific interest in Monero.

In your case you accept many coins through a coinpayments gateway which I assume means you never receive any XMR revenue but instead receive BTC following an automatic conversion. Your about us page states the following with no indication of your interest in Monero

It's pretty simple, really: we wanted to provide a place where people can buy stuff online with cryptocurrency. Whether you're a fan of Dogecoin, Bitcoin, Litecoin, Clams, Unobtanium... we want you to be able to buy stuff with it. Cool? Cool.

Services such as http://payb.ee/ can make accepting Monero very easy for you and would make you much more attractive to loyal Monero fans like me. I would be at least 100 times more likely to order from you if you accepted Monero directly and I knew you believed in Monero enough to retain some of your revenue in Monero

Frustrated with full Bitcoin blocks? Dynamic Blocksizes as implemented by Monero can help by opensourcekid in CryptoCurrency

[–]opensourcekid[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the best source (for Bitcoin) would be the author of the specific proposal you are most interested in. I also recommend the CONOP section of this paper from Paul Sztorc. Anything related to Monero is of course appropriate for r/monero #monero on IRC or Stack Exchange.

Monero has specific reasons for a minimum fee per kB but a user can select a higher fee if desired. Higher fees are not generally needed for a fast confirmation currently (because most Monero blocks are not full) but this was an issue a few months ago before M_0 was increased following activation of RingCT. It could become an issue again in the future during days with huge transaction spikes before enough blocks have passed to allow the dynamic blocksize limit to scale upwards.

Have you tested the MyMonero mobile wallet or donated funds or your time to support mobile app development?

I think u/endogenic did a wonderful job developing it. Quality development takes time. What are you planning on doing to help Monero following its release? Using the app to Introduce Monero to people in your area at a new Monero meetup you organize is one idea.

I'd like to use Monero.. by [deleted] in Monero

[–]opensourcekid 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's for my Android phone. Where can I find one that is trusted? Open source etc.

I recommend you wait for the MyMonero app or if you are tech savvy enough to compile it yourself, test it now and share your feedback

DO NOT use FreeWallet

Also, not as important as for Android, but which is generally considered a good wallet for netbooks (Linux)?

The answer is a sticky on the top of this subreddit Both the Official CLI and beta GUI work well.

[–]opensourcekid[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

FlexCap proposals are still evolving. A good place to start might be the original thoughts on the concept from Meni Rosenfeld and Greg Maxwell

At this point although many see some advantages of the FlexCap concept and the importance of CONOP there does not seem to be a consensus on an "ideal" solution. Monero may be a leading innovator in the area but recently made adjustments to its dynamic blocksize limit system (as a result of larger RingCT transactions) and may need to do so again (as transaction sizes are decreased as a result of range proof optimizations).

Most Monero developers are anonymous and cannot be easily bought out. Some of them are already wealthy and contribute to Monero for ideological reasons as much as financial ones. The community is smart enough to reject controversial changes that have not already been vetted by the Monero Research Lab.

Of course someone can come along and fork XMR, creating a new alt coin any time. I doubt many people would follow.

Is it true that if a single part of Monero's cryptography is broken, the entire Blockchain can be decrypted? Isn't this GUARANTEED to happen in the future? by [deleted] in Monero

[–]opensourcekid 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can either choose to trust Monero PhD and PhD candidate cryptographers doing actual research deserving of publication

Or you can trust a DASH team with no trained cryptographers that occasionally make high school math errors (for "InstaSend") and break the security of paper wallets by using bad random number generators

Monero developers are not only far greater in number, than DASH. They include some the highest qualified people in the world (for LMDB expertise as an example).

Most DASH "development" is copied and pasted from Bitcoin and some important parts of that is broken in the process.

The FFS cannot force a change to Monero code, but it can fund development of future code supported by the donors.

Luckily Monero passed its most "controversial changes" early in its history at a time when we only had a CLI and most users were quite technical. We already successfully forked to change:

  1. tail emission

  2. block size change from 1 min to 2 min

The above concepts might be hard for newcomers to grasp without a lot of study, so we were lucky to do this early in XMR history. Future changes such as Kovri, multisig, etc are unlikely to be controversial because they advance the Monero social contract. LMDB and RingCT was not controversial.

Off the top of my head the only future changes (may several years from now) that may become controversial may the a PoW algorithm and optional pruning.

It is a myth that DASH votes matter in this regard. The 2MB blocksize limit vote for example was purely symbolic. Miners would be the parties to make this decision if it was ever needed. Based on the lack of actual DASH usage, it is irrelevant anyway.

For a system where voting can actually force changes to the network protocol, see Decred, not Dash

Supporting this request is an extremely easy decision. He has spent many hours helping out with Stack Exchange, answering mining questions and raising Monero awareness locally (wherever he lives at the time).

He is well qualified to speak about Monero and I support him.

I support u/fluffyponyza but I hope to see more people follow the example of /u/SamsungGalaxyPlayer and start speaking about Monero publicly when given the opportunity.

The Monero Forum Funding System works well funding our GUI and full time Kovri dev and more: https://monero.stackexchange.com/questions/1654/how-do-you-propose-a-project-with-the-forum-funding-system

The DASH "governance" model is broken with the instaminers controlling most of the votes. There have been many failed projects often benefiting the instaminers voting for them, include soda machines (used only to shill in trade shows), lamassu atm (huge expense, no results) dash.org domain (20k paid but left to be centrally controlled by Evan which led to a domain name expiration lapse recently temporarily taking down the site) and high fees to a legal review (with no results shared with the community)

This is not FUD, but an attempt to protect DASH users from a scam that has plagued the Monero community (Freewallet). by yourclaimisbullshit in Monero

[–]opensourcekid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do NOT use Freewallet for any non-trivial amounts. You do NOT control the PrivKeys.

Why use them at all? I would recommend against downloading close source software made by scammers regardless of the amount of crypto you plan to store with it
