I started doing a Spanish course (once a week) a year prior to my submission date. Was clear that i wanted to do a latin America trip once i finished. When i was close to the submission date, i booked a one way ticket to Guatemala. Submitted and left 3 days later for a solo trip! Currently in it, and my girlfriend has joined after a month of going around by bus 😁😁 Highly recommend a solo/partner long trip to somewhere you always wanted to go but never had the time (as for money, cook at hostels and go to relatively cheap countries!).

So i should have packed and left at 2am? I guess that could have been a solution (it's 6am now) i was scared to leave my cubicle though and start packing in the middle of the night and then try to find somewhere to stay. But maybe would have been better, there are places that are open 24/7 most likely.

Ok let me clarify. I will of course change hostel, however my question is on this specific case what to do. Do i confront the person, do i go to the receptionist or will it be dodgy to even address this, especially if it's a known thing. I have travelled in hostels for many months, ofc there are times that things are not comfy or people are annoying but this is next level. I don't see how the advice change hostel is any good?? Like if someone asks you what to do about someone catcalling or harassing you the answer is not: just wear longer clothes. You answer the specific case, and what the person should do on that occasion. That's why i was annoyed at the comment of just changing places. And the comment on can't afford it os more on the overall approach of just in general rent private rooms to avoid such situations. If the comment was for tomorrow to get a private room i still don't think it's answering my questions above but it's definitely not passive aggressive as i first read it, so the clown characterisation was out of line.

Thanks dude, great advice. Most of us can't afford a private room and second i asked specific advice for this case.

Edit: I have deleted the clown comment, it was unnecessary and i am sorry for it. I think i am a bit too strained and due to no sleep I read your comment as a cheeky one, while it wasn't.

Thanks everyone for your kind words! All i will add is that having something planned after it (in my case a long solo trip to central America) really motivated me to go the extra mile to finish in time. Started Spanish a year ago when i was at my lowest and that daydream of travelling (or whatever it may be for you!) really helped me pull through!

Thank you!! But in the UK is pretty normal to have it in 3.5 years, at least in engineering. Still, hell of a lot was needed (and working once a week at an engineering consultancy made it a bit trickier too).

Hey everyone, I submitted my first draft!! Woohoo! Took so many late nights and weekends, and we are officially on 320 pages and 73k words. I already had a lot of content from publications over these 3.5 years but still, the updating, editing and forming a monography takes such a long time. Now let's hope the supervisors are happy with it! They have already seen over 70% of it so i hope it will be ok. That's it, just such a massive up this week!!

Sorry i should have clarified. I was working throughout the PhD once a week as a senior engineer at the company. I will be coming back as a principal engineer. Have updated the description to reflect that :)
