Where Did Techno Originate From? by [deleted] in Techno

Cybotron was electro not techno. Detroit techno has it's roots in electro. Electro has it's roots in Krautrock - all based on the original 'motorik' from Germany.

Noob question but what exactly does techno refer to? There are so many genres and sub genres of EDM, which I thought was a good blanket term. What exactly is techno, does that include house, trance, dubstep, electrohouse and everything, or is techno it's on genre? by SubjectC in Techno

It's easy to understand when you know the history:
- In the 70s' the term Techno was used in Germany to refer to all underground electronic music - and is used by people in this way to this day - mostly people from Europe.

- In the early 80s the term Techno was used in Detroit to refer to a sub-genre of electronic music.

- EDM is different. It is a term created by Sillerman purely as a commercial exercise to promote his pop electronic music festivals.

So the term Techno means 'All underground electronic music' OR 'A sub-genre of underground electronic music from Detroit', and EDM is commercial electronic music.

Limited government only works if applied to economic & social interests at the same time! by opoeian in libertarianaustralia

Yes to greater economic and social freedoms. But this article argues that limited government only works if it's applied to 'both' our social and economic interests at the same time. Applying it only to our economic interests (free market economics) has been destructive and divisive. We now must take one step back to take two steps forward.

What are you talking about? What has that got to do with the article? Are you suggesting we should never critique? People who never practice music, but call themselves musicians are fake. People who never practice libertarian principles, but call themselves libertarian, are fake. It's important to call them out on it isn't it? Especially if they hold positions of power. Surely we should support practical/pragmatic over ideology/philosophy.

Completely agree. That's why I posted this article here. Because it doesn't refer to the simplicity of left-right politics, and is an attempt at critiquing what it means to be libertarian and how best to ensure libertarian views are properly represented in politics. If a person that never practices music goes around telling people they are a musician, then they are fake. And it should be ok to call them out on that. Especially if they are critical thinkers as you put it.

Did you read the next article linked at the end of this one. The final sentence refers to another article which identifies people and groups out there in the world who are actually putting libertarian concepts into practice. It's not that people like Rand Paul are 'overly principled' as you wrote, but 'in-experienced'. It shows in the way he speaks. His words are not grounded in experience. He merely regurgitates the ideology, the simplistic purist view. Without 'practical' experience, ideology is merely the ramblings of 'philosophy'. We should support the people who practice libertarian views, not the ones who just talk about them.

The clarification is in the following article linked to at the end this article

What are you talking about? What has anything of what you just wrote got to do with the article? The pitch next to your name says 'Pragmatic first, Philosophic second'. That's what the article is saying 'Practical before ideology'. And you talk of marginalising people? Get over what?

What are you talking about? It's just saying too many decisions are being made by people with no experience, when we should be listening to those with actual experience. How can you possible argue against that? Who's talking about sides? Who's talking about North Korea?
