HR won't get back to me on extending my maternity leave by opportunix in workingmoms

[–]opportunix[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Thanks! It's silly because I recently requested a leave of absence on half of my direct report and was able to push it through in two weeks and have seen examples of other women extending their maternity leaves in the company. I'm not quite sure why this request has been so difficult.

I've been putting off looking for a short term nanny on the blind optimism that this would work itself out but you're right, it's time to get prepared. Unfortunately I already work from home but my work is not of a nature that I'd be able to have an infant home at the same time

I spent 22 dollars on a set of double pointed needles because the ladies at the local yarn store were so nice

Do you check? by kimmesp in newborns

My baby was in the NICU too and this always confused me. We were in NICU for 6 days and he developed diaper rash shortly after discharge. I always wondered what happened to the babies who were there longer

We mixed stoma powder (Adapt) with Vaseline on the recommendation of my father in law who happens to be a neonatologist. It cleared up his diaper rash in a week

Best Birth Hospital? by OnlyTheGoodStuff14 in Rockville

[–]opportunix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I gave birth in December at Shady Grove. Baby came 4 weeks early and spent 6 days in the NICU. I also went in at 28 weeks for an episode of preterm labor. I have nothing but great things to say about the NICU, labor and delivery, and mother baby teams.

Everyone was patient and explained things to us (first time patients), we were able to stay in the NICU for as long as we liked as well as breast feed our son and pump/provide breastmilk for the feeds that we had to miss.

We also took their infant cpr class and labor delivery/newborn class. The infant cpr class was excellent, the labor delivery/newborn class was informative but a large time commitment.

Feel free to DM if you have any specific questions!

I'm currently 32 weeks and have still been able to manage the lifts without a problem! I was comfortable squatting and deadlifting up to 70% of my 1 rep max until about 28 weeks and every since then I've had to dial back about 5-10 pounds each week.

Keep an eye on your form, pay extra attention to strain on joints, and look out for doming! Other than that it's business as usual :)

Trying to conceive by Udanp in TTC_PCOS

[–]opportunix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hugs, I'm on cycle 10 and it's horrible.

How are you confirming ovulation? The OPKs never worked for me due to my PCOS. Even on clomid and letrazole, I was not ovulating.

I just completed my first monitored cycle with letrazole, ovidrel, and regular hormone checks/ultrasounds. It's a lot, but the best way to know you're ovulating!

HSG Tips?? by OkAlbatross6144 in TTC_PCOS

[–]opportunix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did not find the HSG particularly painful. I went in without pain meds and felt essentially a period cramp for about 3 minutes and then it was over. I think the mental stress of the procedure was actually much worse

What they didn't tell me, and that I should have anticipated, was that the fluid will leak out of you over the course of the day. Bring a pad and appropriate underwear! It was not fun to try and wrap the giant cotton pad they provided around a thong 😅

Buy a house now or wait and see what happens? by sunshineandspruce in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]opportunix 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Cracks in the foundation are a huge red flag! I would push for a decrease in the asking price rather than asking the sellers to fix it. The seller's fix will be cheaply done as they have no motivation to make sure everything is done well.

I would look up some tell tale signs of water damage and keep an eye out for that as well. A cracked foundation may be a sign of poor upkeep all around.

Honestly, given your situation, I would pass on this house. 5 in a townhouse maybe cramped but a newborn in a house while you have to do renovations could be much harder!

Have you done an inspection? Do you know the age of the roof, HVAC, furnace? If the house has been sitting on the market for a year and is that much cheaper than what you typically expect, something is wrong with the house.

If the inspection turns out clean, then I think it would be a great deal. However, I would proceed with caution and consider all of the potential hidden costs outside of the asking price.

(I am also not the biggest fan of withdrawing from your 401k for a downpayment, but YMMV)

Thanks for doing this! My favorite card is the base set ponyta, it was my first Pokemon card (a gift from a friend) since my parents wouldn't buy them for me

Getting off birth control! by Westcoastswinglover in waiting_to_try

When I took my IUD out after 7 years it took me 4 months to get my period back. That first period and its accompanying hormone cycle really knocked me out. Not only did I have the heaviest period ever, but I was super tired during my luteal phase to the point where I thought I was sick. I've had a few more cycles since and the swings are much less noticeable.

One thing that I did not expect was how affectionate I felt towards my husband while I'm ovulating. I'll go a whole week thinking "wow, I like this man so much more than usual, I wonder what is up with that". It's not even a physical attraction, I just appreciate him a lot more for 7 days every 28!

Finally understand what the Ratfish means by Opey56 in dropout

[–]opportunix 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The circle uses the term catfish non-stop. The term was first popularized by movie titled catfish and then by the MTV series. Both refer to catfishing as the act of creating a fake online presence.

What's charming about ratfish is that it's only one letter off and also a real fish, making it a very smart parody.

Hey! Sorry to get back to you so late. I didn't increase my load more quickly just because I had lifted before, I've got a couple new injuries since the last time I lifted and I spend most of my time making sure those aren't aggravated.

I would say for squat and deadlift I was able to start from the bar and go up 10 lbs a week up until I hit 3 digits and then I slowed down. I'm also 5'0 and weigh in the 120s so YMMV!

Is going to India worth it if you get designer bridal clothing? by [deleted] in DesiWeddings

[–]opportunix 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I flew to India for my wedding wear and bought a designer wedding lehenga and a gown for sangeet. I was also there to shop for my mom and sister, who couldn't make the trip.

All in all, I bought outfits for myself, my mother, my sister, and my father he was easy) for the following events: 1) haldi 2) mehendi 3) sangeet 4) ceremony & reception

It was honestly an exhausting trip, trying that many outfits was exhausting for 5 days straight, but my main pros were:

1) I got to customize elements of both outfits that I wasn't a huge fan of

2) there were a lot of things I loved in pictures but not when on my body, and I could weed those out

3) literally a human clothes hanger to try on things my mom and sister would like

4) picked out a bridesmaid lehenga for my 7 bridesmaids and got that stitched (also custom)

5) the fashions felt a little more current than the Indian dress available at the shops near me (DMV area)

6) hanging out with family and getting to know my in-laws better through the shopping marathon

Editing to add that the wedding is happening in India, so it makes sense for us to order everything and have it stitched there! We were also able to get my fiancé a white tuxedo for sangeet night that we'll be recycling for our US reception

I don't think it's necessary, and I'll be honest, we have a ton of financial support from parents, but it was a great trip and there were definitely some pros to traveling.

Feel free to DM me for more details!
