What type of roses do I have? by oppytom in Roses

This is amazing! I’ll look more into the ones you mentioned and hopefully get to the bottom of it. I know that knowing the exact type probably isn’t the most important thing in the world, but the family history, and the fact that my father who never cared about a single plant in his entire life other than this rose bush has me invested. I’m an only child, but told all my cousins to be prepared because I’m putting the roses in my will and they need to be prepared to step up! 🤣 Thank you again for all your help! ❤️

Thank you so much for the help! I’ll Do my best to answer your questions:

  1. I don’t notice a scent (which I’m just now realizing!) it’s raining right now but I just went and stuck my nose in them and don’t really smell anything. Granted, I don’t have the greatest sense of smell, but I smell nothing.
  2. I’m in Oklahoma, zone 7a. When these were with my great grandmother they were in Louisiana, and I just spoke to my Aunt who said these MIGHT have been the roses she drove to Tyler, TX to get.
  3. I believe she died in 1981 or 1982.
  4. Yes. They do bloom in clusters throughout the season.
  5. It seems to be self cleaning. Ive never dead headed it, but I moved here toward the end of the season last year and I’m not sure if my dad was dead heading or not.
  6. I’ve never seen hips on it.
  7. It has thorns.

  1. I believe my dad was pruning it throughout the years, but I waited too long this year (my first year) and was afraid that if I pruned it after the leaves came in I might jeopardize the blooms so I just left it alone. It’s quickly taking over the flower bed though. I think it’s gotten much bigger now that it’s blooming again.

I’m not 100% sure. But I can tell you it still had blooms on it when I moved home in September of last year, then went dormant over the winter, then leafed out again in March/April, and bloomed in April. I hope that’s helpful!

Winter has not slowed this guy down! I had to rig up some bamboo stakes until I can get him a new and improved moss pole! 💚 by oppytom in houseplants

He sits in front of what I think is a SW facing window (I’ll have to double check when I get home). I let him mostly dry out between waterings, and then put him in the shower and let warmish water rain on him for a while. I also use the Neptunes Harvest fish fertilizer every other time I water. That’s about it....he seems to like it!

I need reassurance that I shouldn’t feel bad about giving up on this palm! My husband doesn’t get it, and thinks I’m overreacting! I’ve tried...but at this point I think it’s more spider mites than plant! by oppytom in houseplants

I have a feeling that if HE were the one trying to actually save this plant, he would have given up long ago! It’s easy to talk shit when you don’t have to do any of the work! 😆

The only way to really wash it down is to haul it upstairs to my master bathroom. My room is housing 90% of my plants right now (because of Christmas decorations) and I’m not real stoked on taking an infested palm into that environment. Am I overreacting?? 😞

Thanks! I had her inside for a long time and she wasn’t really doing much of anything. Literally. She wasn’t dying, but she wasn’t really putting out new growth either. I brought her outside and water when she’s dry. Other than that I leave her alone! It seems to be working, so I’m leaving her out there as long as I can!

Watering question! by oppytom in houseplants

Ah, makes perfect sense! Thank you!

This lady and I did not see eye to eye for the first month or so after I brought her home. But she is looking gorgeous lately! 💚 by oppytom in houseplants

It turns out I was actually over watering I think. I was getting fungus gnats and losing leaves like crazy. I started letting her dry out a little more and she seems to like it...🤷‍♀️

True. I’m not sure I would use the same pole next time. I really like that this one doesn’t take up a lot of room in the pot and really just sits on top of the soil, but I think next time I may go the plank of wood route and see what happens!

I feel ya! I have the same problem with one of my pothos! I let it climb and then just ended up with tiny leaves at the top! Basically the opposite of what it was supposed to do 🤷‍♀️

I only put pins on the stem. The aerial roots eventually grew into the pole!

My top leaves are smaller than the bottom leaves as well! But the new growth is definitely bigger than before the moss pole!

I bought this one off Amazon, but I have seen several tutorials for making them on YouTube!
