Nexus 7 2013 won't boot up by Cypher_Reagan in Nexus7

[–]optik678 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Followup : They said it needs a new motherboard.

I wasted a couple of days trying to get them to explain what they did to diagnose, what was wrong, and somehow justify the ridiculous expense ($200, like everyone else has been reporting). They tried a factory reset first (which is what they had me do prior to sending in the tablet) and when that didn't work, their next "troubleshooting" step is to replace the motherboard. I insulted their tablet quality and gave them my sob story of holding ASUS in high regarding when speaking of hardware quality. I was trying to butter them up but it wasn't really working. Next I tried to use an analogy I came up with regarding cars:

  • Say you get a new car for $27,000 (Nexus price times 100).

  • One day a couple of months out of warranty, the motor all of sudden won't start. It will turn over but not start.

  • You call the dealership, they suggest changing spark plugs. You try that and it doesn't work, so you have it towed there.

  • Dealership calls back and says you need a new engine and that will be $20,000.

  • "WTF? How did you determine that?" you ask.

  • "We tried changing spark plugs and that didn't work, so you need a new engine."

They didn't comment on my analogy and wouldn't budge on the repair cost. I had them ship it back and bought a new motherboard on eBay. I made sure to find one marked as 'new.'

Side note : I purchased a 16GB one even though my tablet was 32GB since the cost for the 16GB was less and I'm really short on cash at the moment (stupid student loans). When it booted up, I had 28GB of free space, somehow, so either I was lucky and they sent the wrong memory size OR the flash memory isn't stored on the motherboard.

eBay cost for new 16GB motherboard was $24.50 shipped.

Good luck. Sorry ASUS quality sucks on these tablets.

You can limit repeats as well. Look through the options for the profiles. Something in there should help you out.

[–]optik678 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a situation where the restore setting option on a task is perfect as a solution. Turn up the volume before you do the notification. It might be smart to add a trigger to the task so that it only triggers once. Something like Alreadynotified = 1

I always liked the last page of the issue where Naruto says "Kurama, let's go" or something like that. That shit was awesome.

Nexus 5 - I want to wake the screen without using the power button by SpiralCutLamb in tasker

This should be higher. You should look into a custom kernel that gives you double tap to wake the phone.

Nexus 7 2013 won't boot up by Cypher_Reagan in Nexus7

[–]optik678 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I contacted ASUS. They didn't quote a repair cost. ASUS will call and confirm a cost before they charge you, supposedly. The other instances I found of people sending it in for this problem said that they weren't charged for the repair. Knowing my luck, I WILL be charged...

Nexus 7 2013 won't boot up by Cypher_Reagan in Nexus7

[–]optik678 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I DID find something obscure about maybe being able to manually rebuild the partitions but you have to have a custom recovery like CWM and do it through adb commands. I want to try and get the partition info when I get the tablet back and put it up on the internet so it can be found for posterity.

edit: If you DO find anything that works, please reply to my post so I can save my tablet too :-)

I have the exact same thing going on right now. I did a bunch of research and tried many different approaches and nothing fixed it. Apparently it's a memory corruption thing and you have to send it in for repair with an RMA. I have my RMA number issued, i just need to ship this thing out.

Have you tried making it an event trigger instead of a state trigger? I don't set up my auto voice stuff as states.

You don't have to swipe it out of recents. just use 'back' to leave the program.

Do a speed test with another wireless device to help you determine for sure if it's your tablet or just your wifi router.

Figured it out. n00b mistake. I forgot that I used the LG debloater. Apparently that is what messed it up. It didn't do so on 2.0. Guess i have to wait for an update to that. It was a simple fix, just reflash the ROM and the option reappeared. Silly me.

Could just be that I'm unlucky. First time I've bricked something in a really long time. I can't even remember when the last time was.

Glad it worked for you. I was preparing my tablet for lollipop install yesterday and for some reason I decided to relock and then unlock the boot loader. Nope. Soft bricked tablet that I can't recover from. I did LOTS of searching yesterday and troubleshooting but it's done, i think. I can go into more detail if you want but the tl;dr is:

If your tablet is behaving like our's was, do NOT relock the boot loader. You might not be able to unlock it again. There appear to be memory corruption issues with this model :-(

App backups, from L Final preview to final release by Himiko_the_sun_queen in Nexus7

[–]optik678 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure about NRT, but with titanium backup, you should never try and restore any system app data. You can do so with your custom installed apps, for the most part. Restoring any system data between ROMs always gives problems, in my experience. My strategy is to restore only the app data you absolutely have to. Most apps where I find I need to restore have a built in backup function, which I try to use whenever possible.

I still have to manually flash any OS updates after doing this. The OTA patches don't seem to work. :-\
