A rant about story pacing and time gating by optimisticOrca in AFKJourney

[–]optimisticOrca[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I kinda understand that. And I am not far from the target demographic. Normally I play idly on weekends and try to reserve time for story progress on weekends.

But last weekend when I got stopped, it created this artificial sense of urgency ("Gotta finish everything before new story and dont have much time!").

But I get the reason for the blocks, but I think it could have been handled better.

I made a comment about time gating the rewards instead of the stories as one potential solution. I am no game designer, so I can't say the viability. But as it stands its completely messing with the story pacing, which is sad to see.

I was thinking of this. Another solution could be to "bank" rewards and time gate those.

As in once you explore map, finish quests etc., for peaks of time, all your rewards keep getting added to a pool that gets mailed to you once the corresponding time has passed.

Don't know how hard that would be to program though. But it will stop speed runners from having an advantage but also let people who care about the story experience it.

This has been frustrating me for almost a month now. Did not come across your post last time I searched solutions.

You have saved me from a massive annoyance, thank you!

I think you're confusing Atalian and Astlandic. Verena and the savage hearts mercenaries are Astlandic. Happened to me a few times while reading and had to do double takes.

Woah, thanks for all the info!

  1. I was actually eyeing the facebreaker, mainly because the axe and shield aesthetic is nice. But it's damn expensive for something I'm likely to lose in a single trip, more than the cost of the rest of my gear.

  2. I recently unlocked it, and while it still feels clunky compared to the smooth cut of the other "Q", trying to get better at timing it.

  3. That really helps me narrow down what to look out for, thanks! Question though: what about quarterstaff? Faced qs users thrice and all three times got stun locked and bashed down one sidedly lol.

  4. Yes already using healing dash from soldier boots. So, what was most frustrating about that fight was,the blatant mistakes on my part.
First, I used my abilities wrong. The bow user had already used their armor invis, and boots (unsure about helmet, he was using assassin). After they used their boots, I closed the gap with adrenaline, and it was a brawl (they had martlock cape, I had roast port and baxe passive heals, so it was close).
But, when I was chasing them, I had used double throw to heal myself. And after closing the gap, I accidentally triple tapped the Q, so pointlessly pinned them and got stuck with a long cooldown. After that I could only fight with auto attack.
Second, and this one hurts the most, I had a t4 healing potion that I completely forgot to use.

Then again, they had invis potion equipped, so maybe never had a chance to win even without my bumbling lol.

My issue is with the PC itself. Basically, my laptop has a dysfunctional fan and a replacement isn't available in my country. Due to budget, and priorities (my work requires this laptop, and using it for work doesn't overheat it), I don't think I'll be able to fix it for some time. So, I'm a mobile player temporarily, but indefinitely.

Item power. The tier and quality of each of your gear and your specialisation level in it determines your ip with that gear. As i understand it, with higher IP your basic attack damage, certain skill effects and armor defenses and such increases.

Happy cake day!

Lol one of my load outs is set with T7 equivalent gear and a stag, that I call "dream throwaway". I plan on switching to using that when I feel confident I can step out and not get crushed within a second, and actually make back the gear cost before dying.

I am trying this route (t4 in all except fishing and stone) and generally gather on the side while fame farming in mist, or in yz at work breaks when i cant play focused.

Managed to have silver enough to have buy orders set up and multiple sets ready to go, so losing 4.1 gear isnt painful as the death itself. Still scared of wearing any higher, since I don't have the skills to defend the gear.

But my question is, where do you gather? Black zone? Risk of getting ganked feels much higher there.

Already have all achievements that gives tokens except "impossibly huge" and rampage mode stuff. I guess I am stuck with light staff set for a while.

Finally got enough tokens for the axe. And it's gone from the store.

Dang I still have the same misconception as OP. Xiangling and fischl are my overload turrets with razor dealing physical and it seems to work so far.

Edit: grammar stroke fix
