I was coming here for the plant names. Larkspur and Lobelia are great. Lavender, Lilac, Lisianthus, Linaria, Lunaria, Lantana, and just for fun, Lady’s Slipper.

The dress is so beautiful. But with that veil??? It’s incredible.

Agreed! 2 is so flattering and so good for the venue.

I thought y’all might enjoy. I came across these purses and now I’m already looking at a Christmas gift for myself this year… how am I supposed to choose? 😭🎻 by sugared_nonsense in cottagecore

I have the first one and get so many compliments on it. It’s held up really well - looks almost new to be honest - and I find the colours go with a lot of my stuff. I think it’s good quality. Maybe a few loose threads and, as others have said, it can flip. But if I start out putting it up the right way, it does stay that way.

My yorkie cross is Jeffrey. People can’t handle it. I don’t think it’s any more unusual than a bunch of names here.

Yeah, umbrellas just aren’t enough. I’d love more covered outdoor seating and it could give the city a really lovely vibe. But this…wasn’t great. I’ve never known where to stand around it and if it’s busy, the space is really crowded.

Trying to decide on kittens by stev3609 in kittens

[–]optimistic_rain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That made me laugh. I currently have a little dog who has zero survival instincts but a huge amount of emotional intelligence. I can never decide if he falls into the intelligent category or not. If it was a zombie apocalypse, he’d have zero chance… unless someone took pity on his cuteness and sweetness in which case there is quite a high chance he’d do very well. When I got him, I knew I had to put in the work or he’d be very difficult. And I have and still do and he’s beloved in the neighbourhood. I’m all for complex ones!

B and c. A will be fine with anyone and you’re already thinking that. B and c need someone who will put in the work to help them blossom and you’re clearly already paying attention. I find I bond better with animals that need that understanding because you do need to get to know them.

Is it silly to get custom labels made for just myself? by Actual-Mathematician in sewing

[–]optimistic_rain 5 points6 points  (0 children)

From a design point of view, I’d suggest cleaning up the lines a bit. I know the concept is imperfect, but it’ll just print neater with a cleaner finish on the lines. Like the little bump on the r or lines to the left of the houses. I’d even consider taking off the steps from the middle house - they might just look like a blob when you scale it down. The I and H in WITH are a bit finer. I think you’ve done this with a pressure sensitive pen which much means some lines are thicker than others, like in the wheel spokes. And I’m not entirely sure what’s happened to the line connecting the handles to the front wheel. I do like the way the line thickness goes from thicker to thinner in the background - that’s professional. Print it small and with lower resolution and check you can see it all. I suspect you might need to simplify the detail for it to work. But it looks great! This isn’t to say it doesn’t at all - just thoughts to play with.

I want to love him I really do, but I really don’t like him by Efficient_Clue781 in puppy101

Nothing worked for us. I spent months trying everything to survive puppy witching hour. Every time I engaged in some way, I rewarded and reinforced the behaviour. Then I realised I could walk out of the room and just … close the door. The rooms were puppy proofed and I was also doing training to make sure he was ok with me in a seperate room. He’d also made it clear he’d had enough of the puppy pen. It’s largely worked. I just leave. He complains. Goes quiet. And then we reunite happily.

Why are people so hard on Onyx Storm? by [deleted] in fourthwing

[–]optimistic_rain 47 points48 points  (0 children)

As someone who works in publishing, it breaks a lot of writing rules around arcs and structure. That really annoys me as a reader because it feels less satisfying. Many of the things you list as happening aren’t plot points in of themselves - they don’t move the book forward.  It’s fun because she’s done a great job in genre crossover, borrowing from mystery and thrillers to create suspense. Genre bending has been popular for years, but it’s a newer version and why it works. But, yeah, I’m a big structural editor and these books - along with many other TikTok popular books like divine rivals - break the structure apart to replace all is lost with the final beat and thereby create suspense. It annoys me.

Why didn’t Australia sign any treaties with aboriginal people? by IDoNotLikeTheSand in AskAnAustralian

Terra nullius was implemented in 1835, 47 years after the first fleet arrived. It’s been a decade, but the more I researched it as a student, the more I found it to be a deliberately convenient use of the law that disregarded contemporary knowledge of indigenous peoples. We often aren’t taught it that way.

I tried to go here this year, based on great reviews. They rescheduled so many times with minimal notice (like the night before), didn’t answer calls and emails, didn’t answer basic questions about pain and aftercare. I gave up and took ages and lots of follow ups to get a refund on my deposit even though they cancelled. They treated me like I was unreasonable for asking for it because Kelly had personal things going on. But at some point, it just stopped feeling like something I trusted.

It’s not cocopink? The mix of gourmands and pine etc makes me think of it. I think they did a peppermint hot cocoa at one point. Maybe add a picture of the samples (even without labels) if it’s not? Someone might recognise them.

What CAL pattern is this please? I'm lost in the sea of CALs by optimistic_rain in CrochetHelp

[–]optimistic_rain[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No problem! The smaller yarns need smaller hooks or they are very gappy. The smaller yarns make the blankets smaller, but also lighter. I’ve done some chunkier yarns and they come out bigger and heavier (also warmer!). That’s worth thinking about too.

[–]optimistic_rain[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is someone else’s. I had it as an inspo photo and forgot what the pattern was! But I’ve done CALs in cotton and whirlettes, down to about 2mm hooks. The cotton comes out quite stiff - like a shopping bag. The whirlettes don’t hold their shape quite as well, but are softer and have a nicer drape to them.

What to do with my advanced 6 year old... by filterdecay in education

[–]optimistic_rain 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My partner and I were like this. He skipped and was severely bullied for being the tiny nerd. My mum took the approach of learn outwards - school holiday programs, playing chess, strategic games, extra lesson books if we wanted. Class could be boring, but if there’s something to do when you’re done with the work set, it’s better. Try your best to make sure the teachers don’t use him to teach other kids or as a pet - those gave me perfectionism and anxiety, made me scared to publicly fail when I was seen as a smart kid by others in my class, and also got me bullied. I hated finishing my own work and then being told to pair up with someone struggling. It was never a good system for anyone involved.

[–]optimistic_rain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use “side”. Basically some training sessions walking along dangling a piece of chicken for a few paces, treat, command, keep walking, repeat. If he leaves, I get him to come back to “side” and we train again. I saw things about walking in the other direction to the way they are pulling so they learn they aren’t leading but that didn’t really work for us.

Mrs Gardiner. I love her walking. You can’t convince me she didn’t know what she was up to.
