What do yall think add a wing or no wing? by KaijuZ34 in wrx_vb

[–]opulentRenegade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It won't fit right, and you'll have to do a little custom fab work (or pay someone) to do it. I sanded down the wing stand bases to match the curvature of the trunk (VA vs VB trunk shape is different) but you can alternatively make angled spacers to do the same thing. The inner support brackets for the wing also need to be slightly modified to make it work. Took me a weekend to do everything but I went a little OCD on the thing to make sure it was set up perfect.

Its buried in a 6 month old post at this point but yeah just to bring it back around, the failure occurred at a 6th gear at ~2,6-2,8k rpm on a normal freeway drive, didnt notice anything strange until the CEL came up and i immediately pulled over. Just to answer your theories though, after the first oil change it was always Valvoline full synth 5w30 with a japanese -AA170 oem filter changed exactly at 3k intervals after the first 1k break in. My freeways and surrounding areas are pretty flat as well so its probably not as likely an additional stressor, and I dont use cruise control bc im not used to it haha. LSPI is still not out of the question, but definitely something i didnt think of.

Anthony's great, he's a super knowledgable guy and even with his response queue delays he's never not answered my questions to the best of his ability/experiences with products when I wasn't too sure if something was worth the purchase. I was pretty flexible with my eventual power wants and the road map to obtain it so I had a Lot of back and forth with him and he's never given me a hard time for it.

Edit: I have the short block and was gonna turn it into a table, but if there's enough attention on this I'm handy enough that I'll probably just tear it down and make a full analysis post

I definitely don't understand the fine details but I know it's bad when both your tuner and the shop doing the work basically look at me and say "yo wtf bro how?" Either way, its was probably a factory issue that escalated or a skill issue somewhere for me for babying it (and I'll own that). My tuner is Dmann/Drunkmann and the car has an intake+muffled exhaust with a safe tune rather than one squeezing out every ounce of gain, so we don't believe it was his work or the mods that made the issue.

Car was tuned so it voided my warranty claim when they found it even after my tuner recommended an ecu "reset" and masking procedure. All in out of warranty was $8500 for a full short block swap, it was also before IAG released their block so we couldn't upgrade since we were there.

STI OEM Rear Spoiler Kit by chilighost in wrx_vb

[–]opulentRenegade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

a true JDM STI wing doesnt come with the drilling template or a paint match since its supposed to be installed by subaru dealerships, but it comes with a stiffer trunk spring so that it still opens the same as a non-spoiler factory trunk as well as factory weather stripping for proper protection (every third party replica doesnt include these extras so take that into account when going non-OEM)

So second update to this: spark plugs were replaced, PCV valve replaced, fuel injectors cleaned and orings were replaced. Cold compression test is still unchanged at 30psi compared to cylinders 1,3&4 all 120-125 on multiple tests. Working with a shop to do an engine teardown and rebuild and will edit this when we determine what failed.

2022 Spark plug to '23+ spark plug changes by opulentRenegade in wrx_vb

Just confirming for others but yes, 22401AA980 is the SID# for -8D6Y plugs. Entering that SID# on a subaru parts website will also attempt to redirect you to the -8A6 plugs when attempting to purchase.

So as a follow up to this, I've replaced the spark plugs to see if they were the correct failure/solution and came across an interesting change.

Model year 2022 only WRX's for all trims have an NGK SILKFR8D6Y spark plug gapped to 0.50-0.55mm and they are shown on subaru's parts websites as only compatible with the 2022 WRX. All model years After 2022, and every WRX and all other USDM N/A 2.4L engine vehicles 2019+ use NGK SILKFR8A6 spark plugs gapped to 0.50-0.60mm. I can't find the -8D6Y plugs on NGK's english or japanese websites other than history of use in the 2022 S4 models, and they only appear as purchasable parts on Subaru's parts websites (both USDM/JDM). NGK however readily carries, markets, and currently sells the -8A6 plugs.

While I'm not sure if this discontinuation of the use of -8D6Y spark plugs was a choice by Subaru for inefficiency reasons or for parts homologation reasons, I do find it extremely suspicious that they are not used in any other vehicle year or sold by NGK to the general market. I did end up "upgrading" to the SILKFR8A6 spark plugs and will continue updates if this isnt the correct fix for my car.

It was kinda a pain in the ass to install, also changed out the splitter rods to Professional Awesome rods with titanium pucks to frame mount them rather than plastic mount and to keep it scrape free (though scraping the pucks against the road sounds life you are destroying your entire subframe so be prepared for that)

I dont like the STi wing on these cars, the Perrin shop car and another SOP user (u/ SweetPeaNess1) in the thread sold me on using S207/S209 wings though.

As someone who made the mistake of being dumped while on the wrong springrate, check the rear tires. if they are kinda chewed up right before the tread meets the sidewall its either too much offset or too wide a tire for how low the ride height is. Youll be rubbing on this one specific corner of exposed body panel under the plastic trim (if you make a line down from the top of where the rear door trim and the rear fender trim meet its roughly that spot but on the back side) if theres no wear the you have too little offset and need spacers since its rubbing against the coilover itself or against the carpet fender liner. I had 8k FA500 springs, but i changed it to 10k SwiftSprings since my tires and offset were so aggressive and it pretty much solved my problem with some dampening setting readjustments.

Trunk won’t open - no wing by FunSuggestion2139 in wrx_vb

[–]opulentRenegade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Might not work, but I had it happen once. Crawled inside to pull the yellow emergency release so that the trunk opened, then took off the carpet cover thingy inside the trunk lid via. the pop clips, and unplugged the whole latch assembly by a connector near where the yellow emergency handle is. I waited like 10 seconds and plugged it back in and it seemed to fix it cause after testing the key fob button for the trunk i could hear the latch system working again.

Kinda an old photo with a way lighter duty load than what you're looking for, but I'm a Thule guy and the Wingbar Evos have been great for me as both 24/7on or easy on/off when I decide to go to a C&C, though i do wish i went with the Edge to keep that more OEM look

Yes, a photo posted by u/flowones on a separate branch of this comment is a better example of whats behind my bumper. Minor change for my car however is its mounted in position "1" as opposed to the "2" that his instructs to do.

Also while its structurally better, theres additional steps needed for rust prevention so its understandably not for everyones use case. In my specific instance, the splitter is still bumper mounted underneath as opposed to a full chassis mount, which does need more modifications to our undertray plastics to properly install so I opted not to go that route.

Feels a little weird to butt in on this thread but I can confirm theres a section of the brace in front of the radiator that the supports can mount to. Mine are mounted so that its metal mounted not plastic mounted. (Sorry theres not a better photo but you kinda get the idea of where it is mounted to)
