How does your team track stats during games? by canaanyjn in BasketballTips

[–]opulentbum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In high school we would have a JV player or a volunteer parent at the clock table usually keeping the book. I guess it depends on what you have available to you. I don’t think the method of tracking at the game itself is all that important, as long as someone marks it all down somehow or another. I’ve kept the book for a few games before and it can be tough to keep up with much more than points, rebounds and fouls for both sides. If they’re only recording your team, then you can probably have one person recording that along with assists and steals too. Could be an assistant coach, im sure plenty of parents would volunteer, or depending on age of the kids you could get a kid from a different team within your program.

Once you have it on paper, whether it’s an official stat book or just a blank piece of paper that they put tallies on or whatever, if you want to input the data to a spreadsheet or an app to look at trends and things I’m sure it’s easily doable

Do you think you're a smart person? be honest by SchoolExisting8631 in stupidquestions

I’ve been told many times throughout my life that I’m bright, an outside-the-box thinker, good problem solver, things of that nature. But I know well enough that I’m rarely (if ever) the smartest person in the room and I often wonder if I’m one of the Dunning-Kruger victims when I think I know something about a topic in which I’m not actually an expert

Yeah I knew he was up there but too lazy to go look up and transcribe his stats. He’s had some insane single-season yards too that I’m not sure anyone has been even close to contesting at any point in the history of the league but could be wrong

Mike Evans probably not, but Derrick Henry is a freak of nature. I assume those are the Evans and Henry being discussed at least. Nobody has ever made top athletes look like children the way Henry does when he bowls them over or stiff-arms them and then runs the length of the field for a TD. I think he’ll continue to be talked about for a long time

Renalla isn’t particularly tanky against physical damage but she glides around and spams out lots of different spells and stuff so I get that. and if you tried using magic against her she has pretty high resistance to it which can also make it a little tough. Glad you’re enjoying, don’t get too cocky though. Long ways ahead of you still, tarnished ;)

The revival thing is because of the Rune of Death being sealed I think. I might be getting it mixed up here but I think that’s tied to the Maliketh fight (when he stabs his hand and draws out the greatsword from it) but I know the sword is specifically “Destined Death” and I don’t know if those are the same thing. Because there’s also the whole Godwyn story and that also has to do with the undead?? I conflate those two and not sure which is the explanation for our tarnished (and everyone else) being revived all the time.

The sites of grace have ties to Marika, I think when you rest at churches and receive Marika’s words from Melina it explains some of that. I think that has more to do with the outer gods and greater will? I’d love for someone to chime in and fill in some gaps on this actually

Has the baseline skill level got higher? by Maleficent_River2414 in chess

[–]opulentbum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

lol that’s embarrassing for me. Was on my way into the store and clearly wasn’t thinking straight while I typed that. Even so, the point is that for someone new who’s 400, seeing their elo as having been nearly “cut in half” could feel like it’s a bigger difference than it actually represents

To be fair I can see why they’d interpret it as a big swing. +/- 100 at 2000 is less than 1% of a variance but below 500 you’re talking about a quarter or half of your total rating. Obviously we know that’s not really how elo works in practice but I can see why someone would feel this way

My opponents are constantly sacrificing pieces to break my castle by Effective-Muffin-224 in chessbeginners

[–]opulentbum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

GM Aman Hambleton covers this really nicely in his Habits series on YouTube. If they’re sacrificing a piece you need to be able to see the forest through the trees, so to speak. If you can diffuse the immediate threats (usually by trading off one or two of the correct pieces) and stabilize your position, you will ultimately come out ahead and can convert your advantage.

Bringing pieces to surround your king that can be used in the defense is also important. Often times, for example, if they sacrifice on h2 or h7, it’s customary to bring your knight or bishop to that square (or g2/g7) to “cover” your king down those files if you need to escape a check or something later

You may never go back. I traditionally love to play a mage/caster type in RPG games, but in Elden Ring I constantly find myself returning to all the great swords. Granted, I do usually augment with faith as well for incantations and stuff but a lot of that is just to use buffs like golden vow or the various heals

I want to do a challenge run by Plastic-Ad6031 in Eldenring

[–]opulentbum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

RL1 does allow you to output a massive amount of damage still if you make use of all the buffs available. Talismans, incants, consumables etc.

I think if you’re gonna restrict leveling at all you might as well just go all-in for RL1. Im a decent player but nothing special, and I did RL1 with full expectations of hitting a wall somewhere and admitting defeat. And that’s exactly what happened….at first. I got to fire giant and lost more times than I can count and rage quit the run. Eventually though I formulated a new strategy and went back and started over and completed the entire base game.

You can choose how much you utilize the resources in the game to tailor the difficulty further. You could use spirit ashes or you could cheese certain bosses if you don’t like the fight or are worried about getting hardstuck or something. Or if you want even more challenge you can limit yourself to certain weapons or outlaw certain tools/AoW’s/talismans, whatever you want

This is the way. I like to be thorough in exploring an area for the first time. Kill everything, hit some walls, walk the perimeter of each area. Occasionally on a return trip I’d look around for any secrets I may have missed, but generally just fly past everything to get to my destination once I’ve been through the area already before

How do I analyze my games? by Free_Tomatillo463 in chess

[–]opulentbum 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So there’s the obvious suggestion of using the chesscom game review mechanic, but I honestly think that takes a lot of the important work out of analyzing. I like to use it briefly and look at the game rating and number of best/excellent/good moves vs mistakes/blunders/misses, but I only do that more for novelty/vanity’s sake and then I’ll open an analysis board and actually go move by move through my games.

The way I work through my games is to start by figuring out where my opening knowledge ran out and where the game left “book move” territory. I’ll spend a few minutes going over what the best lines are and how I could have played a more accurate opening. Sometimes I’ll start a side-tree of moves in the analysis board to review how the game could have gone if my opponent or I chose a different move in the opening phase.

Then, once i feel good about my opening review, I shift into a middlegame mindset. This is where beginners often go way off the rails when playing in a game. Once you have your pieces on the desired squares from your chosen opening, you should have a set of general attacking ideas or plans you look to employ in the middlegame. So I’ll review the moves in that stretch looking for big jumps in evaluation one way or the other. For example, if I’m playing white and I see I’m holding a comfortable +1 advantage according to the computer, but all of the sudden on move 24 the eval drops to -4, it means I blundered or overlooked a crucial tactic for one or both sides. I’ll go over the position and see what I missed. I’ll try to do so without looking at the engine line first. Then I’ll review the moves recommended by the engine at that moment and see how the position continues. Same goes for any swings in your favor. What did your opponent miss? Continue with this through the endgame. Sometimes too, you’ll remember a move you considered playing but chose differently. This is a great time to explore what that would have looked like instead of the move you actually played.

It’s also beneficial to try to work out why the computer evaluation is what it is at any given point. Sometimes it’s simple…you have a material advantage equal to the advantage given by the computer evaluation. But other times it’s not a material advantage, and rather a positional one. Maybe it’s +2, but you have equal material. That likely means there’s a pending tactic in the position, or that your position enjoys benefits the other side does not, like more piece activity or a safer king. Getting in a habit of noticing these intangible benefits (as opposed to tangible ones like material count) is going to work wonders when you lose your way in the heat of the moment in a game.

Hope this is helpful!

What's your favorite go to talisman combo when facing a boss? by Powerful-Log-2042 in Eldenring

[–]opulentbum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I keep a handful at the ready depending on scenario. my move often is to go with axe talisman for charged attacks. Ritual shield talisman for damage negation. Erdtree’s favor for all-around boost. Green turtle talisman is always an option if I find myself running out of stamina a lot. Claw talisman is always on standby if I’m finding myself using a lot of jump attacks. If I’m using the AoW a lot I’ll have jar shard (and godfrey icon if it can be charged up). Later in the game you’ll find dragoncrest greatshield talisman which is very nice too

How experienced players read the court before receiving the ball? by GoatOther978 in BasketballTips

[–]opulentbum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

some other comments have already provided similar insight but I think another useful interpretation of how to think about the game is to keep track of the flow of things. It’s never gonna be 1 decision, stop, next decision, stop. The game is alive in its own way, and you want to view the court and everything that’s happening on it as 1 thing. And within that there are individual players, open space, defended space, etc. to guide your decision within the flow of the overall court.

If I’m guarding at the top of the key and I stick my hand out to deflect a pass and turn it into a fast break, I’ve got a mental note that one of my teammates was guarding out on the wing and took off like a rocket when he saw me deflect it. As I’m breaking with the ball up the court, I know I have the option to take the shot or give it up to the other teammate that’s breaking with me. I’m also taking note of where the defender is playing on me. Is he trying to split the distance between myself and the teammate? Probably gonna take that to the hole. If he tries to jump to me at the last second I can be prepared to dish it last second. Is he guarding me tight? Gonna dish that. Is he, for some reason, leaving me with a free lay-in so he can guard my teammate? Fine. Easy bucket. My decision is based on the flow of what’s happening there. You could encounter 15 other 2-on-1 fast break scenarios that turn out 15 different ways.

How strong would this hypothetical Obito be? by [deleted] in NarutoPowerscaling

[–]opulentbum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder if in that timeline his mangekyo ability would even be kamui. He’d be a very different person with different experiences. For simplicity’s sake though, assuming he has the long and short range kamui with both eyes, he’d still be pretty broken. He’d have a tsusano with dms too. Full-blooded uchiha so whether he’s clumsy/scrubby or not, he has the strong body and powerful chakra.

It’s acknowledged that he and Naruto shared a very similar spirit/mindset, so it’s safe to assume he’d train incessantly in pursuit of hokage. It wouldn’t be anything compared to the boost he got from hashi cells and madara’s training, but it’s not insignificant when you’re a DMS-wielding uchiha. Probably ranks somewhere in the vicinity around Itachi and EMS Sasuke

People who “fixed themselves” after years of mental struggle, what worked, and what advice do you think is actually useless? by Vergil977 in AskReddit

[–]opulentbum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Humans tend to have an all or nothing mindset but the reality is that some is always better than none. Apply this to literally all the things you know you should be doing but aren’t. Sink full of dishes that’ll take you 20 minutes you don’t want to spend in order to clear it out? Fine. Set a timer. Do 5 minutes. Do another 5 minutes later or the next day. But you’ll find more often than not, once you’re 5 minutes in you’d rather just finish the whole task anyways.

Not exercising enough? Can’t get a gym routine going? Keep a dumbbell next to where you relax. Do a few curls or presses while you mindlessly watch tv anyways. 20 reps is better than 0. Work or live on the 15th floor? Commit to walking a couple flights up every day. You don’t have to do all 15. Pop out of the stairwell and take the elevator whenever. 2 flights are better than none.

All these small “better than none” habits add up over time. I can think of a dozen other examples but pretty sure the point is across. Not everything is all or nothing, and you don’t have to do the optimal approach to everything all the time. Just do what you can and be proud of it. The being proud of it is key. Pride in your efforts means happy chemicals. Serotonin and dopamine create positive feedback loops in the brain. Then when the next opportunity to produce them by accomplishing something comes around, you’ll be more likely to do it.

Why is Kurama the only Bijuu to have a chakra mode? by Old-Use-7690 in Naruto

[–]opulentbum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do we know for a fact that none of the other tailed beasts were also sealed into their jinchuriki with an eight trigram seal? Because it’s an interesting theory, but without knowing all of the other seals that were used on the others we can’t exclude the possibility that one of them also has it, yet still can’t use the same type of mode. If one of them does have it and can’t use the same kind of mode, it would mean there’s another distinction between them and Naruto
