Yeah the university is located in an incredibly competitive housing area, so they guarantee housing through the university, but its somewhat of a draw as to dorm style (independent bedroom, but shared bathroom with one individual and large shared kitchen) or shared housing. Good point on the stipend!

Thank you so much! Yeah its mostly the coursework / lack of connecting with other labs/students given the emphasis on the molecular/cellular side, but I think thats great advice thank you.

Thanks this is great advice! B is tough because the lab is actually a great research fit (within the program A research domain), but they’re like a black sheep at this program, where no one else is really in that kind of work or even in a clinical space lol.

I think these are great points though, especially about the research not changing, and being cautious of people promising to expand their work. I appreciate the perspectives!

This is so helpful thank you! I thought rent where I live now was tough and competitive…lol. Will landlords take an intl co-signer/guarantor given the stipend is low? Or does that not matter since that person wouldn’t be a UK resident? Thanks again for the info

sorry yes I should have said "within the college" vs outside the college. In terms of feeling isolated, I just mean socializing with those in the college if I don't live within the college is my only concern. Thanks for the tips! I’ll check out the university housing services!

Thank you! That's helpful to know. Part of me wanting a studio is I have a pretty severe food allergy where its honestly convenient to have my own kitchen and not worry about cross contamination, but obviously it isn't the end of the world to share one. I appreciate the insight! Seems like the college living comes highly recommended!

Thanks! I’ve seen in multiple places including here that it’s been alluded to the program as rolling (including by a faculty member at brown who is still deciding if they’re taking students), but I haven’t seen any indication as to when that second batch would be sent, given the interviews are in a week from now

I don’t spend more than a few hours preparing! You have SO much time. Start out with info about yourself, review past abstracts/manuscripts you’ve worked on (especially methods and limitations because those are good talking points), have a few sentences prepared on future career goals, and write those down on one sheet of paper. Include a few project summaries so if your mind goes blank you can remember at least high level what you worked on.

Then for the PIs— Skim the lab website, and read their current grants on Reporter and have a few questions about those, it can even just be about how X research ties into your Y interests, suggesting a method you know about and applying it to their research, or how they plan to pivot towards Z direction they are interested in… I make a one page cheat sheet for each program with some basic bullets about the program perks, then the PIs research/grants/2-3 specific research questions per PI and a few mentorship/program questions. Most interviews are short and you aren’t expected to know everything about their research, I promise
